On April 6th, we will be releasing a system update over Xbox LIVE for your Xbox 360 that will allow USB flash drives to be used for storing profiles, game saves, demos and more. I've been testing this feature out for a few weeks, and I have to say it's really great. Once you take the system update on April 6th, you'll be able to connect your USB flash drives to your console and head over to the memory section to configure your new storage device. Once you do that, the system will conduct a one time performance and integrity check to confirm the drive is working properly. You will then be able to configure how much storage to use on the device, up to 16 GB. The remaining space on the flash drive will be accessible by your PC or Mac. USB Hard drives may work, but like flash memory, you'll only be able to use up to 16GB of space. Since performance on flash based USB storage is usually better, I highly recommend using flash based instead of spinning media like a hard drive…it's just going to give you a MUCH better experience.

We've also enhanced the memory management functions, so you'll be able to have better control on what you want to copy or move between storage devices.

A couple of points:

  • You can have 2 devices connected to the console at a time, enabling up to 32GB of simultaneous storage.
  • The system won't just configure the device once it is connected to the console. You'll need to head to the memory area in system settings, select your USB Device, and choose from Configure Now (Format and Configure the Full Device), or Customize (you can choose how much memory you want configured for Xbox360 from the free space on the device.)

While any flash drive can be used, we are partnering with SanDisk to release an Xbox 360 branded USB flash drive in May that comes pre-configured out of the box and ready to go. I'll provide links to those drives once they're available. Until then, starting April 6th (when we release the system update) you can pop any flash drive over 1GB into your Xbox 360 and configure it as storage.

I've posted a bunch of screen shots that show you what the experience is like with a USB flash drive, as well as a look at the new memory management screens.

Xbox 360 USB Mass Storage

We hope you'll enjoy this flexible new way to manage your Xbox 360 profile and game data.

.

.

This is fantastic!:D

Update: Via Joystiq

Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb has confirmed the inevitable to Joystiq: Xbox 360 Memory Units and the 120GB hard drive are being phased out. Acknowledging what's been in the stars since February, the Xbox spokesman stated that "the channel is being drained" of the storage options. The same goes for Memory Units, which, after today's official announcement of USB support, makes the MU even less useful.

This makes the $130 250GB HDD the primary option ... well, at least until this fall, if the Xbox Slim comes to pass.

Also, 350 gb xbox 360.

....

When you're Microsoft exec, it would seem you get some really cool exclusive hardware.

Look at the pic immediately below this line, and you'll notice something very strange, or should I say, something very cool.

We were not the only ones to notice this, Digital Foundry saw it too.

How long will this pic stay up? It might vanish soon. But I'll be honest, I'd love Major's Xbox in my living room.

It's a good addition, especially for those with Arcade systems and no HDD. Still, I have 70gb free on mine right now, so I don't think i;m hurting for space :P

Good news for those who wanted this option. I have my gamer profile saved on a memory unit and I bring it when I go to other peoples homes, so I can play on their system using my profile. If this USB storage also lets you allow to play the arcade games and such saved on that USB storage on other peoples consoles too, then I might get it too.

This is why I like the 360 hard drive more even though it's expensive for some people, because you can detach it from your console then attach it to someone elses console so you can play using your own profile and save on your own hard drive anywhere you go.

So does this make the 512 MU I bought a couple weeks ago totally redundant? I'm glad they've caught on to this, it's nice being able to transfer saves from PS3 to PS3 with a simple USB flash drive.

This is system wars dude, what woudl this thread be without comparing the 360's new magic update to an existing PS3 feature.

Could the Xbox just make all storage possible and just completely drop needing a HDD?

I have weird feeling about this drop.

No way is microsoft doing something that would make something they make obsolete via hardware that they still make money on.....with out making sure they get more money for doing it. Take this as an olive branch.

Could've been better. I would think a 32GB limit would've been nicer--that's the SDHC limit plus it may encourage more game installing, saving wear, tear, and heat on the DVD drive.

I don't really see how that's "good" to know. If anything that would be incredibly aggravating to know, if you had just bought a 120 GB drive only just recently for the exact same MSRP.

This follows from the rumored Slim motherboard's lack of memory card slots. I think we can treat the Slim as confirmed at this point.

We'll see about the price for the official one and you can use unofficial USB storage too? Besides these two issues, I do like the 360s storage devices because you can save your gamer profile on them and take them anywhere and attach them to other peoples consoles so you can play with your profile and save stuff on your own storage on the go.

It's not "official", it's Xbox-branded, meaning that inside the housing it's exactly the same as any other USB drive. Microsoft isn't even producing them, so they're not first-party in any sense.

You can actually use a 500gb or 1TB hard drive and the 360 will recognize it but I don't think you can discuss stuff like that here.

PS3's Read limit for the HDD's capout at 500GB.

EDIT - Found out they fixed that in a update, but there are no 1TB 2.5 inch HDD's :P

You can actually get a 2.5 inch 1TB HDD for like $189.99.

Those just arrived like two days ago because I checked on Wednesday and no luck. :D

I find it kinda odd that MS went through the trouble of locking out the 3rd party MUs that were larger to turn around and do this. Well, whatever.

At this point, I strongly suspect two things. 1) The images will be encrypted, 2) Game installs will not be supported yet.

I'm glad I held out purchasing those 60-120GB 360 HDDs.

I would much rather use my USBs for my game data storages.
