Super Mario 3D World may look like a fancier version of 2011's Super Mario 3D Land -- basically, it's 3D Land combined with the character assortment of Super Mario Bros. 2 and the simultaneous four-player action of New Super Mario Bros. Wii -- but despite those well-worn aesthetics 3D World looks to partake of the tradition of cheerful unpredictability, a feature common to the best Mario games. In the course of a five-level demo last week, Nintendo showed off a bumper crop of elements that, despite essentially being reprises of existing ideas, felt totally fresh, effectively new, and often completely wacky.  USGamer

In 3D World picking up a cherry clones your character. Suddenly, you're maneuvering two Toads or Luigis through the stage at a time. The more cherries you find, the more characters you can have on-screen at once -- sort of a cross between "multi-ball" in pinball and the Options of the Gradius games. By the end of the level, I'd managed to build up an army of five Toads; Treehouse director of product marketing Bill Trinen, who was demoing the game for me, claims there were actually a few more cherries than that to be found.

It's hard to imagine something more insane than five Toads storming a stage. Your clone characters all control with the same inputs, meaning they'll all toss fireballs when you hit the Y button, and they all move in the same direction. However, minor factors like the slope of the stage pitch or getting snagged on a wall cause them to drift apart as you play, and I found myself gently nudging them all into corners to reunite them and keep them from wandering off into danger (honestly, it should be a familiar experience for anyone who has ever worked as a manager before).

But yeah, there is something more insane than five Toads storming a stage. If you play the level with other players, you get to enjoy multiple duplicate characters on top of the three other player characters running around with you. With eight characters (or potentially more) on screen at once, Super Mario 3D World breaks down into glorious chaos. It makes the five-player parts of New Super Mario Bros. U feel tame dull by comparison. It also makes you hate your fellow players, especially since the person who scores highest in a given level gets to wear a little crown in the next stage (though you can steal it by butt-stomping near them and knocking it loose). USGamer

That level certainly wasn't the only place my 3D World demo felt a little out of control. Another stage featured bomb dispensers that barfed out explosives that Mario and pals could freely kick around. Punting bombs into walls in the distance served to break open new paths and reveal secrets. And when Bowser brought out his big purple sedan -- which I'm pretty sure he stole from Wario -- kicking bombs back at him proved to be the key to victory.USGamer

One underground stage I played featured portions consisting of silhouettes, which apparently is a mandatory gimmick in platformers now. But 3D World put a twist on it, with the silhouettes caused by both rear and front lighting. After playing through a few portions with backlit silhouettes, your reach a Toad crying because his shadow is being menaced by the silhouette of Bowser -- even though there's no physical Bowser standing near the Toad. But walk forward into the camera and you'll reveal a hidden area where a Paper Mario-style wooden standup of Bowser lit from in front is casting its shadow onto the same wall as the Toad's shadow. Topple the Bowser and the Toad gives you a Star in gratitude.USGamer

Even the world map feels different from usual here. While 3D World makes use of the classic level map seen in a number of Mario games beginning with Super Mario Bros. 3, here you can move freely around the map. ("Even Mario's gone open world," I joked, to no one's amusement.) Trinen says exploring the map will reveal power-ups and other bonuses. And, as with any good Mario game, every stage contains lots of little hidden spots and out-of-the-way corners where you can find extra collectibles.USGamer

It's Mario, but in a format that switches up Mario conventions in interesting ways. Just because Nintendo EAD Tokyo is working in the style of Super Mario 3D Land doesn't mean they phoned it in, and by all appearances the same creativity that made their Galaxy games so good is in full effect here.  USGamer

I'm not even sure that DK will be better anymore, both look absolutely incredible.  Mario definitely is flashier.  And then there's Sonic lost world which looks great too, but still a level below these two.

Might get that Zelda bundle within the week.

Initially I was disappointed, but the latest trailer did look amazing. Still disappointed it's this fixed camera angle type of game and not a true 3D Mario but Nintendo have redeemed themselves.

It's still just another first party title for a system that desperately needs third party games.

Nintendo consoles have continued to chug along without third party games for twenty years now.

Yeah, as nice as it is to have third party, I don't really care.  I just want them to nail the first party.  I felt Wii was lacking, but WiiU seems to have a leg up already.  It really will all come down to Zelda (and Metroid) for me.  With that said, Mario looks great, Smash will be great (if they nail the online), Mario kart looks much better than the Wii iteration, and Wind Waker HD is a nice little bonus.  I just NEED to see more X and definitely Zelda and Metroid.

I'm not saying it's a good thing at all. It's horrible, and relegates a Nintendo console to 'secondary console' status at best. Doesn't change the fact that ultimately, no Nintendo console since SNES has *needed* third party support to subsist in the market.

Speaking of Zelda: Where is all of the A Link Between Worlds hype? Now that is switching up a formula, and hopefully making the franchise feel fresh even to the most doubtful people.

Also, while typing this I realized (A) Link Between Worlds doesn't really work for sentence structure. I'll probably just call it Between Worlds.

I honestly cannot tell yet if I like the change or not.  Don't get me wrong, it is very interesting and I am happy to see them playing around with the formula and making this feel different from ALTTP.  WIth that said, I know so many Zelda haters have bashed it's linear storyline and such, but I am not sure this is the answer.  I am kinda thinking there is a better way to mix up the formula.  Such as having items hidden in the overworld and such.  And making big epic quests other than the dungeons.  But I kinda like finding these items and the feeling of unlocking new areas because of it.  Not sure how the new style will work, but you better find worthwhile and fun things in the world/dungeons.

I understand that the allure of a Nintendo console is always first party titles, which is why I have done a complete 1808 on the WiiU and have bought one again, but it doesn't always have to be constant streams of 1st party games.  Competing a little with quality 3rd party titles would do a world of good for Nintendo.

I just wish the stream of first party games was constant. The console launched with NSMBU and Nintendo Land and didn't get another first party game until Game and Wario, which was disappointingly crappy. Pikmin 3 and The Wonderful 101 are nice, but with DKC getting delayed, it's going to be 2014 before there are more good first party games on the console than third party.

and I really hope to see some Zelda (and Metroid) new soon.  THough I am skeptical they will make the game I want to see.

Looks like it'll be neat. I like the diea of the level design of 3D games with the time limit and such of the 2D games.

Although I'd like to see another exploration based game like Sunshine.

Agreed, I mean I like what they are doing and it is a good idea for the first run at openness, but getting items in dungeons meant something, it was progress. That is much different from buying/renting the item. So hopefully later on we'll see improvements to this rough new formula. Perhaps this line of thinking will carry to a console Zelda where they'd have more resources to do something like a large overworld quests for dungeon items. All of the big overworlds in Zelda (TP, OoT, sort of WW) never meant much, that would be a way to fix that. Though, that is just thinking of what could (and likely won't) happen. I guess we'll see.

Didn't the original LTTP have items hidden in the overworld, like the ice rod? That was pretty cool.

I do worry about grinding in Between Worlds though, not too much, but it might happen.

I really don't like the idea of a non-linear Zelda. The idea of just renting items to go to whichever dungeon you choose is a real turnoff to me.

I just can't believe it took a trailer to generate any hype for a 3D Mario game on an HD console. The last two games have either won GOTY or scored a perfect 10 here.

Yeah ALTTP had the ice rod and another one or two i think.  OoT had the biggoron sword, giants knife, skulltula items, and other thins.  they all had bottles.  MM had tons of masks.  It really is nothing new, it is just that they have dumbed down the exploration in Skyward Sword, making it all feel more linear and restricted.

this is what you could've received 7 years ago if nintendo didn't release GC twice in a row and if WiiU was as powerful as a ps4. i'd let you imagine what could be possible on that... They're a gen behind with this lmao

Well, If I remember right, you need both the Fire Rod and Ice Rod to complete the game.

I think Skyward Sword felt more linear, but I don't think it actually was, less collectables though, that was a bit of a bummer.

I really don't like the idea of a non-linear Zelda. The idea of just renting items to go to whichever dungeon you choose is a real turnoff to me.

PurpleMan5000

I hope the rental thing doesn't become a mainstay, but I think they could strike a good balance between linear and non-linear, especially with some of the choices they made in Skyward Sword. Say the Sky is the main overworld and they flesh it out really well, then attached you have mini overworlds (below the clouds) that are done in a specific order, but each mini overworld has nonlinear objectives within. It'll never happen, but I can hope.

The problem is that they flip-flop a lot, many fans play Zelda for different reasons than other fans. Nintendo doesn't try to strike a balance, but try to please which ever half they see fit. Or at least that is how it seems.

More on topic, I believe somebody asked if the world map in 3D World would have secrets, but I think it says in the OP that it does.

Funny how Nintendo consistently churns out better games on more limited hardware, don't you think?
