I keep hearing the certain gamers on this board claim that PS+ is a "laughable service" and is a "total rip off", yet these same people will fight to the death to defend that Gold is amazing value and better then PS+ and totally worth it.

_

  • Let's look at the facts.

PS

  • For less then what it costs to get Xbox Live Gold, PS+ get's you access to games like Wipeout HD, LittleBigPlanet, Destruction Derby. In a nutshell PS3 titles, PS1 titles, PSN Arcade Titles, Minis, DLC, special themes, exclusive demo's and services such as Qore. And all these things add up each month, I think it's supposed to be 4 titles per month? At the end of the year you'll have experienced a very significant amount of content and games that would have otherwise cost you a lot more then the entry fee. And best of all, if your already a crazy PSN purchaser, it's 100% optional, and you don't feel like your missing out if you don't subscribe.

Money

  • What do you get with Xbox Live Gold? Nothing... You rent Online play, which in reality is nothing. PS+ gives you bang for you buck, you don't even need to buy any games, Gold is only for people to access the online portion of their already purchased titles. And please don't list Live features that are a part of Silver this is about Xbox Live Gold.

_

So my question to System Wars is, is it not totally unreasonable to say "Gold is better value"? This is beyond being about opinions and preference, it's simply a fact that PS+ gives you more value. What do you guys think?

Live has been profitable since it first came out, so it must be a good value.

I was really digging this comparison until this point. >_> Clearly xbox live gives you *something* or people wouldn't pay for it.

I think that's a matter of semantics. Are they really "giving" you something? Or are they simply "returning" you something? Is online play not rightfully yours when you purchase a game?

PS Plus will be greatly improving as it continues. I am a PS Plus member and love the free PS1 games, Arcade game they offer each month! It is so worth it and in my eyes is so much more enjoyable then Live. The sick part is PS Plus just came out and look how advance it is, just imagine in 6 months where PS Plus will be.

PSN+ would be good if it offered the content XBLA has, but unfortunately PSN pales in comparison.

LOL that is a funny ass comic. XBL is a rip-off... But for some reason I keep renewing it... PSN+ looks ok (Isn't the free game this month the whole season 5 of sam and max?) but I already own a ton of PSN games so I dont think I would get good value out of it.

Xbox Live Gold is annoying, Playstation Plus is better... Xbox Live Gold is 60$ for a few early demos and online play, but PS+ is 50$ for free stuff and lots of discounts.

Hey man I fully understand a gamer's need to own people online, that's why we pay for Live even knowing it's a rip off. Theres nothing wrong in it. My only annoyance is the people that defend the rip off.

LOL xbox live gold's value is withholding online play which the purchased game ships with. One is offering something while the other is withholding something. you tell me the better value.

Of course I did. When i pay 30 quid a year, i pay so that i can play great games online, and thats what I get.

If I were to pay whatever it is a year for PSN+, I would be paying for the opportunity to download games that Sony CHOOSE. And considering that PSN pales in comparison to XBLA, and doesn't have that many good looking games that I don't already own, where would the value in that be?

Wow looks like MS have done a smashing job at brainwashing folks... XBL is like the ultimate case of paying for content already on the disk... Pachter said that the 10 dollar price hike will result in over 100 million extra bucks from the XBL service... If they used that cash to set up dedicated servers for every single game on 360 and they were perfect with no lag or anything then XBL Gold would be awesome... Unfortunately they don't host any games at all... XBLA just grants your access to something you have already paid for, and bombards you with advertisements...

If I had to pay, and that's like, having a gun to my head from from sony or microsoft... i would choose PSN+ I mean seriously, actually PAYING to play something you've already paid for is ridiculous. I would pay for neither, and I don't pay for xbox live, because why should I. But If I had a PS3... and I had to choose, for sure it would be PSN+, at least you have something to show for the money.

Right. They're both terrible values. But you said it yourself, we're comparing XBL Gold to PSN+. The difference is online vs games. To me, online is better. Therefore XBL Gold is a better value than PSN+. By saying "oh, ps3 owners get online anyway", you're bringing regular PSN into this... Which you just said not to do.

It isn't. You are buying the right to all things that come with Gold for 48 hours, 1 month, 1 year, 13 months, whatever. You are paying for a service for however long you sign up for. That service is yours for that time and you have the right/ability to use it however you will as long as that falls within the companies Terms of Use.

There is a difference between purchasing a service and renting an item.

I don't think you fully comprehend what is going on with PS+ and Gold :? In fact I'm 100% certain you don't fully understand. Imagine if I bought a game like Warhawk or Socom that is all about online, I will have payed for a game that doesn't work because I don't have Gold, so essentially I just threw money away.

No, it's not because with PSN you have the online anyway. So it's really early demos vs. games. Anyway, both are an obvious rip off like most DLCs.

Only downside to PS+ is that the games you get for "free" are useless if you drop your account, sure it's a nice loyalty incentive but I think at least some of those games should stay with you when you drop your service. hell give us a % of PS+ Fees we have rendered to pick 1 or two games we really liked from the service if we decide to drop it a year or two down the road let us keep at least 1 or 2 items for being loyal customers. Xboxlive has always been a ripoff and will continue to be, I don't see how they can justify the extra $10.00 either besides "Developing new ideas for Live" that they would do without that cash anyways.

So what are we paying for?

Despite most 360 games being client hosted, theres still a lot there that is server hosted, such as leaderboards, file sharing, cross game chat etc.

XBL does not provide M$ 100% profit, someone else posted here a while back that around 35% is operating costs. So while it would be nice for XBL to be free like the competition, you can't say it should be free, or that its rightfully yours, because its not.

Online play should be free because it is free on every other gaming system... and Microsoft doesn't host any of the gmes.

Online leaderboards? XBL doesn't host those...

If XBL Gold's features were file sharing, voice messaging, and cross game chat who would pay 60 bucks for that?

I keep hearing the certain gamers on this board claim that PS+ is a "laughable service" and is a "total rip off", yet these same people will fight to the death to defend that Gold is amazing value and better then PS+ and totally worth it.

Gamtrix

Do you even have a 360 and XBLG? I personally dislike MS and the pay to play online but to say XBLG offers NOTHING but online play is exactly what a diehard biased Cow would say and it is completely wrong.

If you are going to start a thread like this at least explain everything XBLG offers instead of purposely excluding everything just to make PSN+ sound amazing when compared.

[QUOTE="Gamtrix"] But online play dissapears when you stop paying too. And it's free everywhere else, and 99% of gamers everywhere will tell you that it's rightfully yours when you purchase a game. Gamtrix

 rightfully yours? But its not, Microsoft pay to keep online running, because its not entirely client hosted like fanboys like to believe. It would be nice for it to be free, yeah, but thats different.

If that were the case, you'd only have your own stupidity to blame. And stop saying i don't comprehend whats going on, because I most certainly do.

[QUOTE="Gamtrix"]But it is. It's the rental of online play. And don't bother bring Silver feautres into this discussion. Gamtrix

Why don't you get into specifics? ;) The details prove my point, which is why your keeping your posts short and vague.

What in the hell are you talking about?

Live you purchase for an extended period, whatever transactions you make within your time under that contract, are still yours after the contract has terminated.

If I buy a Halo 3 map pack when I have Gold, and my Gold subscription ends I will still have the ability to play on the maps within the map pack I purchased.

And? I never said they did.

Anjunaddict

So what are we paying for?

Despite most 360 games being client hosted, theres still a lot there that is server hosted, such as leaderboards, file sharing, cross game chat etc.

XBL does not provide M$ 100% profit, someone else posted here a while back that around 35% is operating costs. So while it would be nice for XBL to be free like the competition, you can't say it should be free, or that its rightfully yours, because its not.

You just listed a bunch of stuff that is in Silver, why did you do that? Isn't this about Gold vs PS+?

With PSN+ you keep everything after your service has ended other than the free games... Discounted DLC and stuff stays.

Online play should be free because it is free on every other gaming system... and Microsoft doesn't host any of the gmes.

Online leaderboards? XBL doesn't host those...

If XBL Gold's features were file sharing, voice messaging, and cross game chat who would pay 60 bucks for that?

Who hosts online leaderboards then?

And no, it shouldn't be free just because of the competition.
