more psn users then that and steam has 80% of the dd market i guess pc gaming is not that popular.
lundy86_4
Yes, as the DD market is all there is on PC...
yeah pretty much its near dead at retail. only place around me that has a decent pc secetion is best buy. most places dont even sell pc games.

Thanks for the anecdotes that do little to prove anything. DD, in the US, only accounts for 50% of the market according to the NPD.
No, no its not the same thing at all. Active customers buying things through steam are people logging into their Steam accounts to purchase and play these games. These are not non active customers.Same thing.. since the people I'm talking about haven't logged on Steam in years, they of course didn't buy anything on Steam either.
milannoir
I'm inclined to agree, especially compared to the UDK.... Source needs some serious work.lol, I'm pretty sure Valve is the only people who thinks that. :P
Teufelhuhn
PSN has no where near 35 million active customers, nor does it have nearly as many concurrent users. Quite frankly PSN pales in comparison, XBLA isn't that much better either.more psn users then that and steam has 80% of the dd market i guess pc gaming is not that popular.

Theres 4 million people online on steam right now :D What's with people saying they're probably alt accounts I highly doubt 4 million players will have 35 million alt accounts
Kinthalis
I think its the first time I've seen It peak at 4 million.
Actually it got to 4.5 million over the labor day weekend.
Who has alternate accounts? Out of maybe 20 people who I know and who have Steam, 0 of them have "alternate accounts".
Can somsone clue me in? Why would you want an alternate account?
Only reasons I could see is if you wanted to hack vac games or you where buying extra copies to play with another person online on another pc you owned. In addition to Steam, there is Source, our own state-of-the-art game engine. Its sophisticated character animation, advanced AI, real-world physics, shader-based rendering, and super extensibility have helped us create some of the most popular and good-looking games on the market for computer and consoles. We don't like to brag, but Source is considered the most flexible, comprehensive, and powerful game development environment out there. And it's about to get even better.
It can only mean one thing – yeah you know what. But let us know what you think in the comments section below. Is Valve going to announce 'it' soon?"
skrat_01
Or it could mean that DOTA and Counter Strik are running on an improved source engine ?
Now if only they would release Half Life 3. Or Episode 3. Or anything of their own, instead of just buying new IPs from people.
Been long enough, methinks.
[QUOTE="Brean24"]But we arent, we are on Unreal Engine 3 which is exactly the same system that Value is using. The Source engine from 8 years ago is different than the Source Engine used in Portal 2 and now Counter Strike Global Offensive, they have been updating it every year just like Unreal Engine. Source Engine 3 which is the version that they are hinting at will likely be just as major of a improvement of Unreal Engine 3 was to Unreal Engine 1 and 2. If valve were to post articles about the updates they have added into the engine and start calling it "source 2.0" or something people wouldn't have a problem. They do post with the Updates. When they release a new game in the description it usually says what they added to Source.[QUOTE="II_Seraphim_II"] progress seems like a compelling reason. If we used ur logic, we would all be on the unreal engine 1lawlessx
The next update will be with DoTA 2. They will add Cloth Simulation.
As much as I like Valve, the Source Engine is now showing its age in comparison to the Unreal Engine 3, CryEngine 3 (even 2), Serious Engine 3, Frostbite Engine 2, id Tech 5 just to name a few.
They still sell PC games at Gamestop.:|But but but PC gaming is dead you don't hear anyone in gamestop go their to buy PC games or talk about it!
funny thing is when I was christmas gift shopping some dude in his 30s or something walked into gamestop and asked for the PC version of Assassins Creed 2
NoodleFighter
Even though I ACTIVELY avoid shopping there, It's where I bought Dragon Age from. They may not get the shelf space that console games get but they are still sold behind the counter.
[QUOTE="kris9031998"][QUOTE="SHATT3R3D-GLASS"]It's free, so I don't see why this would "astound" us...SHATT3R3D-GLASS
35 mil ACTIVE customers. So....you know.
Imagine the number were Steam not free.logically the number would stay around the same, but I wouldn't expect someone blind about membership fees or anything know that
Steam is now available in 237 countries and in 21 languages, and for a platform that had a really slow start in 2004, this is simply phenomenal.
skrat_01
Uh, there aren't that many countries on Earth. So don't know what that article was talking about... I'm gonna say typo, and the real number of countries is 37.
But, good for Valve?
But PC gaming is dying!!... PC gaming tops consoles in everything , including active gamers. 35m STEAM ALONE + 15M League of legends + 12M WoW , only those 3 = near Wii total users. And these are just 3 applications/games with active players/subs. Insane indeed.AzatiS
You're assuming each of those are individual active users. Many may use all 3.
[QUOTE="organic_machine"]I really don't think so, simply because it wasn't much of a surprise. It's been going that direction for quite some time.skrat_01I'm willing to bet they'll announce something HLcentric towards the end of the year, on a new engine that's an overhaul from Source - as Source is about to go free ala UDK.
I wish, but it's more likely something terribly boring like cross platform support with xbox.
Thanks for Steam's awesome Sales and me getting a better computer than my Laptop. I've become a regular user too.
[QUOTE="lowe0"][QUOTE="Phoenix534"]Why not? It's been thoroughly tested and debugged. No sense throwing that away without a compelling reason. progress seems like a compelling reason. If we used ur logic, we would all be on the unreal engine 1Are they just going to keep updating the Source engine forever?
II_Seraphim_II
But Source is still strong. Just look at Portal 2: It's still looks amazing as ever, and can run on a wide variety of hardware. So why ditch what could possibly be the greatest engine in the history of gaming?
What the heck are steam lovers smoking? Its like theyre all blind fanboys!
No offense.
But seriously, where the heck is HALF LIFE 3!!!
They have heaps of money, continue to do so so instead remodel the source engine, sure they have been some great games, but nothing beats counter-strike yet. Is it me, or does Portal feel like a DLC for Half Life...
Anyhow...
The support for steam, in my eyes, is preventing them, where should be moving on.
Have people forgotten about Half Life? Or have the gamers that jumped on steam the so called 'new gamers'?
"Wake up Mr Freeman.."...
These days, he's still sleeping.
Great Gabe... now bring out Half-Life 3. Also i want to see DX11 features in there, fully implemented ASAP.
I love getting statistics from Valve, but I think you are overestimating what the numbers actually mean.
For example I'm one of the 6 million unique people who logs in every day, because Steam starts automatically as I boot the PC, but I don't actually use Steam often.
While 35 million "active" (whatever the definition for this is) is impressive, it's free to download the service.
I love Steam and I don't purchase PC games that aren't compatible with it, I've been there since the first month in 2002? but take this info with a grain of salt.
I'm not really feeling anything for DotA 2 as it's not based on the warcraft graphics engine/lore but I think it will be a success for them anyway.

I understand everything else you've said about DOTA2, but this? Why would you want REALLY outdated graphics

Maybe I should be more clear lol. I mean, Valve's game is not the continuation of the warcraft engine, it's something different. I would much prefer "warcraft 4" graphics in dota 2.

Are they just going to keep updating the Source engine forever?
BigBoss154
They sound sound like IW/Treyarch regarding the 12 year old Quake 3 engine they use for COD.
Except the COD engine is ugly as hell while as the Source Engine has aged gracefully. Even the updated versions for games like Portal 2 looks phenomenal. There's nothing wrong with the Source Engine at this point in time.GoG > Steam for downloadable games. Only problem is they don't sell new games :(Valve's success is absolutely deserved. Steam is hands-down the best gaming service available today. I look forward to what they do with Source.

Yeah I'm not supporting any other service than Steam because I want one unified system. Having to deal with multiple accounts and friend/achievement/games list is tedious.
If other ones start to take off and there are several games I really want that aren't available on Steam I'd have to give in, but I'm not gonna help the cause resulting in making my daily life worse.
The problem with having one monolithic entitiy as ruler of the PC digitla download space (and Steam is already almost there) is that things tend to go down hill at that point.
Once a company dominates they tend to get lazy, they tend to not listen to their cutomers, because where are they going to go if not to it? They tend to invest less, and they tend to take less big chances.
I don't know if Valve and Steam can hold on against all that corporate BS for ever. Maybe while Gabe is in the captain's chair, but the dude needs to get fit. I don't want the most influential PC market lead to die on us :(

Wow, that is ridiculous.
We're only saying this because we care about the guy. Which is so friggin strange as it is. Since when do gamers care about CEO's?
But it's true. That guy cares for the PC platform, he cares for gamers, and he has great instincts when it comes to the gaming market. Which is why I want him to live a long and healthy life!
