"We thought that there would be something that would emerge, because we figured it was a sort of untenable... Oh yeah, we understand that these are the rules now, but it's such a train wreck that something will have to change.
"That's why we're really happy with the current situation with the PS3," he said. "We're solving it now in a way that is going to work for our customers, rather than assuming something is going to emerge later that will allow us to fix this."

Valve feels the need to bash one console at all times. Before it was the PS3, now that they're swimming in Sony cash is the 360.

No they didn't. He's talking about it from a developers perspective. IE not wanting to charge for DLC, having the Steam Cloud.

If I was a game developer I would want to work with an open system like PSN so I could do with it as I please. A closed System would make me feel like I'm hand cuffed and not be able to do things how I had envisioned them to be.

No. I think valve has common sense to see that microsoft raising xbl without bringing any features and stopping user created content and updates such as steam shows how ripped off you are getting.

Yes he did :? When asked if its mistake on Xbox Live was to assume Microsoft would let Valve update its games more often, Newell said: "We thought that there would be something that would emerge, because we figured it was a sort of untenable... Oh yeah, we understand that these are the rules now, but it's such a train wreck that something will have to change.

XBL is a money train but the service is a rip off. It just sucks that we have to pay for stuff on top of paying for live while PC gamers get it free.

Their problem with the PS3 before was the hardware; it was so different from the PC architecture of the 360 that they didn't want to bother. It's not that it suddenly became easier to make games for it, but rather that PSN is a more open network, which they like. They're rather peeved that Microsoft was going to force them to charge for Team Fortress 2 updates, which to me still seems ridiculous. XBL may be a great system, but its closed nature is getting on the nerves of more than one developer here... the same reason Valve is shifting their console focus to PS3 is the same reason why we're not seeing FFXIV for 360.

lulz, here is the actual quote over what the train wreck is.

Valve boss Gabe Newell has called his company's assumptions over Xbox Live "such a train wreck".

Your "actual quote" is really CVG's interpretation of the comment. The comment comes from the actual quote in the OP "Oh yeah, we understand that these are the rules now, but it's such a train wreck that something will have to change."

Well it's about time. Both systems don't really work for valve, but at the same time they both have advantages. From a development point of view, the xbox is much better because it's more similar to a PC, but the PS3 is completely different, this is why Gabe shot it down. Now that valve has taken on board the PS3 and has worked to get their games on it, they realise that the Networking is more similar to the PC's which in the long run is better for them and for the consumer. It means faster updates, hassle free, and of course no charge to the customer.

Full Interview regarding this:

Erik Johnson: Favourite conversation of ours! PS3, so far. The way we've dealt with those customers so far, and the product that they have, and the lack of updates on the 360 for TF2 is also a total failure. Those are the ones that sting the worst because…

Doug Lombardi: There's actual ramifications.

Erik Johnson: Because it got all the way through to customers. It's like a bug. If you fix a bug before it ever ships, it's pretty cheap. If you ship it and then fix it, it's really expensive. Those ones are really bad.

Gabe Newell: That's why we're really happy with the current situation with the PS3… We're solving it now in a way that is going to work for our customers, rather than assuming something is going to emerge later that will allow us to fix this.

PC Gamer: Was the mistake on the Xbox side to think that Microsoft would let you update it more often?

Gabe Newell: We thought that there would be something that would emerge, because we figured it was a sort of untenable… "Oh yeah, we understand that these are the rules now, but it's such a train wreck that something will have to change."

Erik Johnson: We did kind of blindly go off and build… you know what we've done in TF2 because you've played TF2, right? We built a lot of things. So there is this business issue of how do you keep delivering software, which we did kind of think we could resolve in some way. Market forces are dictating it should be resolved. But then memory's a problem for us now – we've added all these things, so you have to consider those budgets at this point.

Erik Johnson: I mean it's a trade-off. I don't know how to evaluate that trade-off today. TF2 on the PC side has delivered a huge amount of value, but we've screwed up on the other side.

It's not as simple as you think it is. It isn't as simple as: "We like Xbox, boo PS3. Oops nevermind, we love PS3, boo xbox."

They didn't like the PS3 because of it's foreign hardware architechture. It had nothing to do with why they like it now. If you ask them what their stance is on the PS3 hardware, they'd STILL tell you it's a pain to work with. But XBL is frustrating them, just like it ALWAYS had, just is it had been when TF2 released, bust as they had talked about when TF2 released.

It's just now, they see the open nature of PSN and they figure the pain of the irregular hardware is worth the investment.

Not with all devs, but i've heard a number of times that MS wishes to charge for certain added packs that a dev may wish to be free. Whether it's standard business practice, i'm not too sure.

You're missing the context, he's referring to the update system and the costs associated with it on the Xbox 360, where as it's streamlined and flawless on PC -- XBL as a whole is not what he was talking about.

Steamworks is yet to be integrated into the PS3's network, so their patches and DLC still have to go through sony.

Blaze-Agent

This.

and it really is, Microsoft's verification system can be a world of woe.

Furthermore from the CVG article.

"Microsoft has a notoriously closed approach to its online service compared to PSN, with developers allowed as little as one free title update (though there are exceptions) and limitations on the amount of free game content they can release.

In fact, in its recent paid-for Red Dead Redemption add-on Rockstar included all the free-of-charge content from its previous Free Roam pack, "due to the platform network's restrictions on numbers of free packs we can give away."
"

Shame.

So the options on consoles are tight. He can have hard to use hardware with the PS3 and open online capabilities, or Easy to use hardware with the 360 with very closed online capabilities. In reality, The people at Valve probably don't like either.
