Oh, never mind. I've heard of it. I heard a lot of people compare Monday Night Combat to it. I don't really know much more than that though.

There's some consistency in the fact that Valve has been pretty lazy since Half Life 2, and would rather capitalize on past efforts than create new IPs.

[QUOTE="ToScA-"]Morphling? Worst character name I've seen it a while...jhcho2

Let me guess....you've never played Dota

I played it extensively during my high school years :| Dota Classic up till Dota 3.7 thereabout; on Reign of Chaos. Then came these new versions with ridiculous amounts of new heroes, not to mention the exorbitant amount of new items, ******* ruining everything.

It used to be all neat and clean, then turned into too much of everything for some reason, lost its appeal if you ask me.

Dota 3.76c keeps it real though; not a lot of players around these days though.

...Also, it is entirely possible to not having played a game and still loathe a character name coming from said game:|

No, they hired the guy that moderates it now, not one of the original people. I think one of the original people helped make LoL but I'm not sure.

Well..that's the problem. They didn't. Who they hired was Icefrog, a guy who took over updating the mod from the original creators some time ago. There'a very ugly mess going around with Valve registering DOTA trademark, funny thing is Riot Games in response to that has applied for Defense of the Ancients trademark

A lot of people don't know this but Ice Frog (the current programmer/creator of Dota) has been wanting to sell/pitch Dota to multiple developers. It was his idea, and he wanted to sell it. Im kinda glad that Valve took it instead of lets say Activision or some crappy no name.

Dota has over 4 million players in the U.S alone, Im surprised it took this long to make it an actual game.

Nobody owned dota, and thus, he could not sell it... but he had every right to pitch a dota like idea to other companies. Morally, maybe its grey area, but whatever... my issue is why valve would do this as between LoL and HoN, is there space for another dota? I also want to know if theyre going to release DOTA 2 for free as publicity for steam and new steamworks features.

Problem is, yes it was.... Icefrog was not alone in creating Dota-allstars, he had a partner who also worked on the website Dota-allstars.com, however Icefrog wanted to pitch the idea of a Dota game out side of WC3, to "expand" Dota and make it better. His partner saw it as selling out and the two had multiple differences.

Icefrog has mentioned multiple times before that he wanted to sell the idea of Dota (he even approached Riot, the developer of LoL) I don't know how that makes Valve accountable at all.

The problem is he had no hand in actually creating DOTA, he just took over after few years. So creators in good faith left it for him and he cashed in on it and ran away. He even had a nerve to call it DOTA.

And knowingly purchasing stolen goods is what Valve did.

DOTA 2 eh? They hired Icefrog, not RIOT games. As it was the guys behind RIOT games that made DotA. This is selling another person's product without his consent. This is pretty much an IP theft, but since from what I am aware of no one actually owned the IP therefore while it is legal, it is still very immoral.

Ouch, I knew this was bad but not this bad. My respect for both Valve and Icefrog plummeted, really low. I just hope this DotA 2 is free like Alien Swarm was or else I will be really angry.

Edit: according to Blizzard's EULA.Blizzard has rights over any icon/names/code/etc from WC3 and over any custom map, but not the concepts. I assume this means that if anyone has the right to do DotA 2, it would be none other than blizzard, correct me if I am wrong though.

I know this man, we all know that. Eul's passed it to Guinso, and Guinso to Icefrog. It was their choice of passing on Dota and Icefrog was the one that made it incredible popular. He's the reason for Dota's success and he has the right to sell it or not.

Why? Again, Dota was not that popular before Icefrog started developing it. He made it successful, i don't know why people have a problem with that.

He may have popularized the game. But he didnt create it. DotA didnt create the concept either, it was Aeon of Strife, a map for the original Starcraft. Hence if you visit WC3 map sites, they will frequently refer the genre as Aeon of Strife (AoS). Still he didnt make the game, and because of that, he doesn't deserve rights to the IP, even if it was he who made the DotA the game it is today. In my opinion the IP should belong to the one that created it not the one that popularized it.

The game (DotA 2) will probably be the best in the AoS genre, but it is also the most questionable.

Hopefully they'll make a FUN game; I've played a few titles in this "genre" and they have not been very entertaining.

Probably the worst aspect of DOTA/DOTA clones is that the controls+camera just DO NOT fit with the gameplay. It's a pointless relic left over from the WC3 engine. I'm hoping Valve ditches the bland point-and-click mechanics and goes to third-person camera + WASD controls, or something similar. They need to make it more of a skill-based game, not just a "take pot shots from behind minions, and flee like a girl when in danger." That's NOT fun to me ..not to mention encouraging that behavior makes matches drag out.

ICEFROG has been hard at work for the past few years developing dota for the community, releasing updates, fixing bugs, updating the game to keep the community interested. He also posts in forums to ask us what the gamers want to change in Dota and always updates the latest news. So what do you even mean when you say he ran away? And when he does not charge for the mods, what do you mean he cashed in on it. If you mean he sold it to Valve, please think again; Valve approached IceFrog. Seriously i doubt the people flaming Icefrog are even true Dota players. Anyone who plays it appreciates how much IceFrog has done for the game.
