My favourite shooter of all time would have to be Perfect Dark for the N64. Even to this day i've never played an FPS that offers as much as this one did.

Timesplitters 2 is also incredible, as is Halo: CE, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, F.E.A.R and COD4.

Donkey_Puncher

Opinions are opinions, but Perfect dark and Time splitters? I can't even comprehend how someone can say those two games are top of the line shooters.

Actually for CONSOLES, they might be the best.

but there are many superior shooters at the PC.

I think ID used to be amazing, but now they have not produced anything good, doom 3 wasn't that good (HL2 was way better imo).

currently Valve is the best imo, but Id may make a comeback with Rage.

They are and have always been amazing. Doom 3 wasn't a good Doom game, it was a terrible Doom game in fact but it was still solid and made you **** bricks (not to mention Resurrection of Evil was *way* better than Doom 3). Plus, at the time and for a while after it had the most advanced lighting in any game engine (real-time shadowing). Not really until F.E.A.R. and Crysis was the lighting surpassed in quality. Also, the engine was one of the first to use full bump-mapping, a standard in game engines now.

id has always been on the forefront of developing new technology for shooters (and in general), without them there would be a big gap in game engine technology and game design. You have to recognize them for what they have done to establish the shooter genre... not all developers can survive for nearly two decades (17 years) let alone keep releasing solid titles throughout that time.

They are the greatest to me, games like Call of Duty 4 are still awesome, but none provided me with the same experiance as HL2, and nothing has been as edge of my seat epic as the end of HL2: episode 2.

I have to say in terms of consistancy, yeah, Valve takes the take. Most influential have to go to Id software, especially in the 1990s. They made games like Doom, Doom II, Quake, Quake II, and Quake III Arena, all of them shooting classics, and they've all had big influences on the shooter genre.

You are not alone. I feel the exact same way. So much so, that if (or when) it becomes available on either XBL or VC, I will buy a console, just for it. Imagine playing 4-player splitscreen, with 8 bots available, all explosive weapons, with no slowdown. That would be incredible.

Hard to really argue against it.

Warren Spector and company sucked arse with the last Deus Ex

Irrational Games Bioshock was aweszome, but most would agree System Shock 2 the superior game overall

Bungie is awesome but Halo from a single player standpoint peaked at 1..

SO Valve would be an easy pick.

I agree with their id Tech Engines I do believe id Tech 4 looks better then Unreal Engine 3 and that id Tech 5 looks alot better then UE3.

I'll second that Doom 3 was an awesome game. My only complaint was the mandatory switching between guns and the flashlight to see what the hell was in front of you.

To be honest, Valve, besides HL1, hasn't ever made a game that was anything more than good imo.

They're good. I only like HL and TF from them though, and hopefully soon to be L4D. Not a very big fan CS or DoD. I like Ubi more. ^_^ Big fan of GR,RS,and SC.

*shrugs*

They built the engine and the concept, Nerve took it and made it better.

I'll second that Doom 3 was an awesome game. My only complaint was the mandatory switching between guns and the flashlight to see what the hell was in front of you. Donkey_Puncher

I loved that aspect of the game. It gave you a choice: "do I see what is coming to kill me or do I shoot it?" It added a whole deeper level of anxiety to the game, not being able to defend yourself if you wanted to see anything. At times it was a bit much (like the one level where all the light you had was your flashlight and a fluorescent tube on a motorized track that went out every so often) but it got the point across that they were proud of their lighting engine. Resurrection of Evil toned down the shadows and made it dark but not impossible-to-see dark, which I thought was a good change. Still scary as hell but not **** bricks scary for extraordinarily long periods of time.

Valve didn't develop System Shock 2 or the original Deus Ex, so I respectfully disagree. The Half-Life series isn't bad or anything, but it's too linear for my taste and the narrative doesn't really impress me. I prefer more freeform FPSs where I can tackle a given problem any way I see fit.

the half lfie games are kinda underwhelming today ... especially the lack of weapons and generic enemies ( combine , zombie , headcrabs , a few striders and since EP. 2 some few hunters)

Generic enemies? Like the different scecies of head crap zombies? Like the different types of synths? Or the different classes of Combine soldiers? Half-Life definately had variety to enemies, and IMO the synths (striders and hungers) are some of the best designed enemies in memory.

Far from it.

Plus it didn't have rechargable health, and that god awful respawning enemies idea.

I've played Half Life 1, Blue Shift and Half Life 2, and I found them all to be pretty mediocre.

I think Valve is overrated, but I recognise that they must be doing something right to get such praise. They're just not for me.
