@GarGx1: pretty sure it wasn't illegal. People just got so upset that ubisoft re activated any keys that had already activated the game and cancelled the rest of the fraudulently purchased keys
It's 'legal' in as much as a forced contract is 'legal' (EULA). There are very few End User Agreements that a good lawyer couldn't shoot down. The most basic being the fact you are forced to agree to their terms, after purchase, with no negotiation being possible. For them to be fully enforceable the EULA would need to be agreed to prior to purchase and not after.
Of course I'm not American, where the legal system is set up to protect those with the most money.
