What do you guys think of this, I would think most people here can agree that Black Ops 2 is a much better game then recent CODs, and yet it isn't able to maintain sales yet beats MW3 day 1 sales. interesting. Also Video Game sales in general are down 28%, suprising considering some of the games we got this year. Thoughts?

Guitar Hero 5 and Rock Band 3 were arguably much better games than their predecessors yet could not maintain sales. Franchise Fatigue eventually sets in and sales only can reach so much before you go back down for a while if not forever.

I'm pretty sure it has to due with Halo 4 coming out 7 days prior, many kids (Yes, that is a fact ) most likely would have a hard time getting there parents to shell out 120+ dollars in 1 week on games. I expect BO2 to outsell MW3 lifetimes sales, most likely selling truckloads on black friday and Christmas/Boxing day

People are starting to get bored of current gen consoles. Nothing new or exciting is really happening happening. It's jut buy x sequel/prequel that is essentially the same as the previous iteration.

no games because all first party devs are switching their main focus onto their next consoles. This is probably the worst year of the gen in terms of game hype.

It's true. They really casualized it, and it was already a pretty casual series. I'll go into details if you'd like bbkk.

I thought they made some steps in that direction with MW3, but they completely took it to the next level.

Video games are down because it's been a pretty slow year, so far the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii sales combined have well surpassed console sales of the previous gen so gaming has grown quite a bit. 2013 looks to have a great line-up so lets not act like gaming is dying because people are buying tablets. COD is most likely down because the series just stopped being good. I used to get the COD games strictly for the single player, which was good up through World at War and Modern Warfare 2, and went to crap when it sacrificed the SP in favor of a more MP focus with Black Ops and MW3, if feels like they're not even trying anymore. This is the first year I didn't get a new COD game since the very first game... and frankly it was pretty easy to ignore given how much the last two games sucked.

What's there to disagree about that? The only people that think theyre good at CoD is the ones who get paid to play the game. Either that or blind fanboys who ride Activisions D*** like no tomorrow. CoD has been dead since MW2, but people keep buying it due to the hype, marketing, and the peer pressure brought upon the user base which has the average player of 12-16 years of age.

  1. Tail end of the gen
  2. Fatigue
  3. Growth of DD, IOS/Android app games

Would be my guesses.

I think the current world financial market has something to do with it. People just dont have the money to spend loads on games. When a year ago many people were buying 10+ games a year, this year maybe the cant afford to buy 10+ so they have to pick and chose the ones they really want.

That said, this isn't very suprising, this gen has dragged on for far too long, the interest in current gen consoles and rehashed sequels is starting to fade...

this gen should have gtfo two-three years ago, no wonder sales are going down. Its like if Wii was the only system available for gamers in the next 10 years, no1 would give a sh!t it even exists couple of years from now. PS3/360 needs to go away, they served their time long ago now gtfo!

People have finally got some sense knocked into them.

Millions of people weren't going to buy a CoD game every year indefinitely. So, this a great thing. Mind you, when the next fad hits, we're going to have to repeat this cycle all over again.

Plus, remember, this is Activision. They literally do run their franchises into the ground and make their own fans hate them. Guitar Hero was huge, Tony Hawks was huge and Spiderman was huge. CoD wasn't going to be somehow exempt from their reign of destruction.

There's probably a sh*tload more I'm forgetting.

I don't think it's franchise fatigue when the entire industry is down 28% but COD is only down 20%. It's beating the industry average. If anything, it's gaming fatigue.

Just face is Shake, although the campaign is great, the multiplayer is pretty mediocre. It's not terrible, just the same but with a slightly changed class system, some more Halo game modes thrown in and a few new killstreaks.

They'll probably do this with Bungie's next game, Destiny. They'll hype the series up big, the first one will be fantastic, the second one will be great, third will be good, and after that they'll milk every last dollar they can out of the franchise and move on to something new.

Sales in video games in general have gone down because the generation of current consoles has run its course. Nothing new is being attempted by developers anymore. Developers know what they can and can't accomplish on the current consoles and are developing within a well known predefined box.

Sales in Call of Duty have gone down for a similar reason with the added fact that the Call of Duty brand has been worn down. They have been releasing altered versions of COD4 for several years now and people are finally getting tired of the brand. Heck, Call of Duty has used the same "shooting gallery" campaign style since the first Call of Duty. The only reason this didn't occur earlier was because a significant amount of the people who buy the game never touch the single player campaign. Treyarch moving the game slightly into the future was an admission of the fact that they have completely over developed the brand. People are getting tired of the same old setting and the same old story lines about special ops soldiers saving the world. Honeslty, Activision should start work on a new FPS brand outside of Call of Duty. Judging by past decisions, my guess is they will continue releasing the game in a annually/biennial fashion until its no longer profitable thus pounding the IP into the ground.

I believe the poster was referring to COD already being "casual", although I really dislike that term. Especially when people saying now all games are casual. It's like when elderly people say the world has gone to hell and it was all a whole lot better in their day. Also you have no source to prove your claim that the average user base is 12-16. In essence your saying whatever your opinion is and passing it off as fact. In addition to this, COD is not GTA. The slump is a general trend in the whole industry, with UK sales down 28.7% year-on-year, so actually COD has done better than the trend with a 20% slump.

Thats exactly what happens to every successful activision franchise. Once they have a game that is widely successful they start relasing a version of it every year until people no longer buy it because the IP has been so watered down. Call of Duty isn't exempt from this judging by how people have reacted to CoD:MW3 and COD:BO2

It's normal, current gen consoles are very old now and people want NEW games and consoles. Many bought previous COD only cuz of the hype, i in the other hand never bought any :D

Thoughts?

Same here and I've only bought 4 steam games this sale.

[QUOTE="MakeMeaSammitch"]It's true. They really casualized it, and it was already a pretty casual series. I'll go into details if you'd like bbkk.

I thought they made some steps in that direction with MW3, but they completely took it to the next level.

There's no skill involved at all anymore.

Is this guy serious right now?

Lol.

I gotta agree...is this guy serious?

I mean, CoD was already considered casualized trash as it is what did they do now to make it even MORE casualized? Is it now an on rails shooter and all you have to do is push one button? Does the game play itself? How much more casualized can the most casualized game get?

People have finally got some sense knocked into them.

Millions of people weren't going to buy a CoD game every year indefinitely. So, this a great thing. Mind you, when the next fad hits, we're going to have to repeat this cycle all over again.

Plus, remember, this is Activision. They literally do run their franchises into the ground and make their own fans hate them. Guitar Hero was huge, Tony Hawks was huge and Spiderman was huge. CoD wasn't going to be somehow exempt from their reign of destruction.

There's probably a sh*tload more I'm forgetting.

I'm not going to lie, I'm so dissapointed in the multiplayer I'm not buying the next one until I've at least rented it.

I don't think I'd even call it watered down. They've just really created a trend towards more simplistic, random gameplay in the last two games, and people are noticing.

Oh I agree too. Just thought it was funny they said "It's true. They really casualized it".
