I'm sure all of you have heard this topic before, and probably on this site, but I am a senior in high school and for my senior report, I'm doing it on the violence in video games debate. So, if you are a true gamer, could you please help me out and tell me your opinion on the subject; do violent video games promote violence?

Every time I hear some politician blame video games to acts of violence, it makes me want to punch holes into my wall from pure uncontrolled anger.

EDIT: Just kidding. I'm not a violent person. I've played plenty of violent video games in my life... But they never reflect who I am in the real world. I think there's a fine line between video games and reality, and I don't think people should bring video games into reality like that.

No. Violent people are violent by nature. They are messed up way before they get their hands on a violent video game.

Video games are an easy scape goat, though.

I don't think so. But after playing CoD4, I sort of feel like shooting people via laster tag. GTA is also guilty of making me 'want' to wreck havoc. But this is all just a fantasy - I would never do anything violent, whether I see it in videogames or other media.

Genghis Kahn, Polpot, and Hitler all pwnd the Halo circuit. I think hitting a hooker with your car after receiving oral sex from her and then shooting her in the back with a shotgun and taking your money back, only to kill 2 cops with a machine gun and shoot down a helicopter that started chasing you after all this with an RPG... might make people a little desensitized to violence, but I'm not sure if doing that in a video game has any correlation to the propensity to commit violent acts in reality.

I don't know, do they? The burden of proof is upon the claimant. I have yet to see a single shred of evidence that suggests that videogames lead to violence.

I'll start looking at video games as a serious concern about violence the day after the production of civilian firearms is banned worldwide. Till then, got bigger concerns.

Violent video games cause visceral emotions in gamers. That's a fact proven by science. Does it cause actual violence? There's little reliable evidence to prove that.

I wrote a paper on that once. (And no, I'm not kidding :P ) Obviously, my answer was no. There was a study done the Harvard Medical School and no direct link of games to violence was found. It's really a ridiculous, house-hold myth.

Only if the person is psychotic from the start. And if that's the case, they shouldn't have been allowed to ever play these games by their parents, and it was bound to happen eventually. In normal people, no.

yes they do, as does every form of media out there. to put the entire blame on video games of course is wrong as t.v. movies and music have just as much if not more violence and adult content than video games.

it is a matter of how much time one spends, and how easily he/she is influenced. for example teen magazines targetted towards young teen girls cause them to become self conscious and can lead to certain eating disorders, or make them become compulsive in keeping with latest trend. rap music tends to enforce the stereotipic image many misinformed americans have of african americans living in poorer areas. video games produced for a mainly male audience often portray women in a twisted light. games like cod, halo, etc can give the wrong impession to underaged adults that such violence is typical in life and promotes aggression (hence the whole im growing up to be a marine, and racial slurs and aggressive behavior promoted online) how about the simple being told that he/she cannot play video games tonight produces rage, and a similar result occurs from doing bad

video games of course dont negatively affect everyone, but to say they dont have any influence would be naive. a lot the cases where we see kids killing their parents or other sbecause of video games are often rare cases, but should be looked at. a lot of this violence comes from addiction where the typical person spends a good amount of time on games each week, and such addictions will have mental and social impacts that should not be ignored.

Video games cause visceral emotions. Developers capitalize off these emotions to create more satisfying and better selling games.

For example, the amount of gore in God of War enhances the experience by making combat more satisfying and pleasurable. Do they cause violence in real life? That's a bit harder to argue for or against.

Only idiots will blame a video game for violence. And only idiots will do violence from the game that they play. If some one plays a violent game. They then try to mimic or copy what they did from the video game on to real life. Then that person is mentally ill and have no life (in some cases). If you have a healthy body physically and mentally you won't be doing this stuff. You will just be enjoying the game that you bought.

Yep and the crazy ones end up killing their parents over it, Didn't someone do that because he wasn't able to play Halo 3 because his mom told him so?

Another way is that games like Modern Warfare 2 and Gears 2 getting killed in the game constantly, leads to "UGHH" then cussing then throwing the controller and then breaking the controller and or the system itself, and then the people going really crazy and start hurting the people/animals next to them.

This isn't SW material. Does music, film, photography and fine art lead to violence? Video games fall into the same category.

no. bad parenting leads to violence.

i've been playing violent games ever since i was 5 or 6 and i am not a violent person, whatsoever (i havent got in a fight since like the 5th grade)

i think parents use the video game excuse to make up for their terrible parenting skills.

That last part is a bit unaccurate. Yes indeed, I've cussed like a maniac playing Halo and Call of Duty, but I wouldn't dream of actually hurting someone because of it.

Playing too many video games can lead to pissed off kids who feel an uncontrollable urge to debate and analyze videogames vigorously on a forum... which can turn into anger, and then violence.

Yes I agree, parents are the one to blame 100%. In my country last 3 weeks. There was a boy who got his foot stuck in the escalator. Fireman had to come to the rescue to get this 6 year old boy foot out. Several days later the parents of the boy filed a suit to the court against the shoe company on the shoe that their son was wearing on the tragic day. That really is just pure stupidity. You don't know how to take care of your own child, then you blame others for your mistake. What an idiot.

Orly. Show me one single instance of an individual acting violently BECAUSE of videogames. Show me the actual pathology of videogames causing violence.

Go ahead, do it.

The problem here is that you're talking about a stew of complex psychological, electrochemical, hormonal, and stimuli-based motivators. If some idiot had actually determined in a clinical or scientific study that the single pathological cause of violence is playing violent videogames, he would probably be laughed out of whatever institution patronized his research.

[QUOTE="Brownesque"]I don't know, do they? The burden of proof is upon the claimant. I have yet to see a single shred of evidence that suggests that videogames lead to violence.Brownesque

Don't watch the news then much do ya?

Only people with mental issues copy violence off video games.

Did you read properly? I said people with mental issues would copy the violence in video games.. this kid who used to live in my area was obsessed with wrestling games, and once he decided it was "ok" to perform wrestling moves on people he bullied.

Like I said, people with mental issues.
