@darthbuzzard: Not Microsoft Store, Microcenter. It's the largest dedicated computer retailer in a very large city, and the fact that they couldn't attract enough interest to keep a VR demo going is significant. And, no, Target and Best Buy haven't picked up the slack here.

It's further worth noting that my city is extremely diverse demographically and is used by a number of nationwide retailers to test market and gauge consumer interest.

Like I said, they will probably ditch HoloLens demos next too. Microsoft aren't exactly known for demoing these things particularly well regardless of the technology.

@darthbuzzard: Read my post again. This has nothing to do with Microsoft.

@dzimm:

People go to microcenter more for parts and accessories. VR is an entertainment product. Yes theres a game area in microcenter stores, but its not front and center.

Im not taking sides, but ive been to microcenter plenty of times--its more of a hardware store for computers.

@dzimm: Dude, you're trying so hard in this thread. Look, VR is gaining popularity, not losing it. It's easy to see. I have no idea why this pisses certain people off so much.

I've never denied that it's gaining popularity. My contention is that it will never become mainstream like smartphones.

Microcenter is a geek's paradise. It is exactly the sort of place you would expect a VR demo to be a hot attraction, but it withered and died due to lack of interest. I suspect that most people who have any interest in VR already have headsets, and that future sales will be largely limited to those same people upgrading to the latest and greatest.

@dzimm: But that's an absurd notion. Technology is moving inward, not outward. It is becoming more and more invasive as time goes by. VR is absolutely a direct result of such invasiveness. It will in time be far bigger than smartphones as progress is made on that front, eventually reaching the point of chips and such being planted in the body, taking the place of headsets. You can see where this is all going, to a certain extent. Incidentally, I'm not saying I'm on board with wires and the like under my skin; in fact I'm very much against it. But that doesn't mean it's not coming.

That's a laughable statement at best. Considering the billions of views dedicated to unfiltered VR gameplay, there are tens of millions of people who are clearly interested in what VR has to offer but are waiting it out. That's to say nothing of the remaining 95% of the world's population who don't even know what 'VR' stands for yet.

@darthbuzzard: Huge difference between a casual interest, and actually wanting to spend big bucks and dedicate a room of your house to it.

I stand by my prediction that a 10% adoption rate across all platforms is a best case scenario.

Nice, dzimm. Spreading lies again. Since when has VR ever required dedicating a room aside from SteamVR tracking solutions which are now a small minority?

News flash. It hasn't. The space required for active games is minimal and plenty of stuff can be played seated.

Your 10% prediction is going to bite you in the ass over the next 10 years. Just be wary of that. That wouldn't even be a worse case scenario in my book.

You are thinking to narrow.

Once this is wireless, lite and streamable ... it will be a cheap form of "Giant TV" as you sit on the sofar or at the desk. VR is a wide range of experiences.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I can ever see vr being mainstream it just isn't want the hardcore gamer wants. It's a niche products which shows with the attach rate. Even when the price point is right it'll still won't be want gamers want.

the only thing preventing me from dropping the cash on triple curved 1080P monitors is that i am really considering a VR headset instead that would ultimately provide a better panoramic view that changes when i move my head as well.. and as someone who live streams i cant really use the other monitors to their fullest extent anyway, having to use at least one monitor to watch the stream and chat

consider just two of the three 1080P screens i looked at would have costed $400, i could still upgrade my main screen and use the money saved not buying the other two to get an oculus

have they fixed the screen door effect? what resolution do modern VR headsets run at now? i may buy one in a couple weeks

@kali-b1rd: Nah, 3D cinema and television proved that the vast majority of people don't enjoy entertainment that requires them to strap goggles to their face.

10% adoption rate across all platforms. Best case scenario. :-)

Poor misguided soul. It's cute that you think that.

VR sucks... it's still years away from being a good experience.
