The game's difficulty was actually quite overrated.
It got easier as it went along - you'll die straight away to pretty much everything at the start, since you've got no health and no idea where to go...but once you've levelled up and found a decent shield, most of the later boss fights are easily beatable on your first attempt (for example, I was actually honestly expecting that Cinder fellow to be a mini-boss leading up to the 'real' final boss, since he went down so painlessly to standard block-and-swipe tactics).
If anything, most of my deaths came from the game not offering any indication as to where to go (so you'll walk down the 'wrong' path and insta-die), or the clunky platforming sequences. Those were definitely bordering on cheap deaths.
Anyway, Dark Souls was far from a terrible game. It was generally well-designed and had some really good fights in it. It probably wouldn't hit any of my top ten lists - especially considering some of the anticlimactic boss fights and hilariously phoned-in ending - but it certainly wasn't "bad".
