57,000 X $60 = $3,420,000

Doesnt sound like a flop to me, but I don't know how much they spent making the game

agentfred

Are you kidding? :| On average, publishers/developers have to sell 500,000+ copies of PS3/360 titles to even break even. Not to mention, pull a profit.

All costs included, very, very few games cost 30 million dollars. Cut that down to 250,000 copies, and I would probably agree with you.

Ok, so I exaggerated a bit.... Though, a recent article did affirm that it would take an initial investment of $17 million to develop a PS3 title - and that DOES NOT include development costs. Not to mention, advertisement, distribution, etc. www.ps3power.com/ps3-dev-expensive.htm

Third party developers aren't going to take Playstation 3 seriously with losses like that.

Lilac_Benjie

lair bombed because the devs decided to use the sixaxis to control the dragon instead of the analog sticks... so that means all 3rd party will stop making games for PS3? :| i wish i was as smart as u :)

It might have a bigger impact than you will ever admit. Assuming it took roughly $15-20 million to develop Lair, those are ENORMOUS losses - and other developers will pay close attention, since they are, above all else, businesses.

The cost of developing games for Playstation 3 is extravagant to say the least. The abysmal failures of some of Sony's most hyped games at E3 will contribute nothing to the necessary motivation for third parties to develop on the expensive Playstation 3 platform.

Further, $60 games are sold to retailers for $50. That extra $10 is how retailers make money off of new games. .Hoffgod

Isn't the $10 supposed to go to the company that owns the console? Hence the $50 price tag of PC Games versus the $60 price tag of console games?

Just asking. Not too sure myself.

Actually, you were pretty much right on. The President of Namco Bandai said last year that a PS3 game had to sell 500k copies to break even. Source. The VP of Marketing at Sega went even further, saying that a PS3/360 title needs to sell about 600k copies to break even. Source. 500-600k units need to be sold to just break even, and Lair only sold 57k units? Ouch.

There is an additional cost of about $10 as well added for licensing as well as the $10 discount given to retailers. So if you see a game on the 360 and PC, and 360 version costs $10 extra, that's why. $40 to the developer and publisher, $10 to the retailer, and, for consoles, $10 to the console manufacturer.

I wasn't counting that in this case, though, as Lair is published by Sony, so I doubt Sony would charge itself $10.

It will release Nov 15 in Japan, I can see this game selling better than NA there. I am confident that this game will have sold 500k in the end of this year. At least I hope so, cause is a great game.

Have to remember also that Lair was in development for about 4 years. Lair was supposed to be a launch title even. Kinda stinks for the developer to just blow off 4 years of work with sales like that.

I heard that's what they said on the latest 1UP Yours podcast.

WTH?

I understand it might not be great...but 57,000 units? If true, do you guys understand how much money would have been lost on this project?

I can't even imagine the level of disappointment experienced on any level (devs, marketing team, artists, engineers, project leaders, Factor 5 owners, Sony) that would go with 57,000 units sold.

Unbelievable.

Dreams-Visions

lol why would any buy that for 60 dollars. They"ll be fine, they"ll get that money back in a couple of years.

Not in this case, though I think Lair will still do poor the PS3 is only in their first year.

Games can still sell well for years like Halo: CE did. I remember that game being on sale for a high price for a LONG time cause people kept buying it as time went on.

Yeah and then there's Marketing which probably was atleast $5 Million worldwide and that's really low more likely it's $10 Million.

So year IF it does even 400k only it's still not great. And based on how much Sony seemed to think this would push the use of the Motion sixaxis it is already a flop in that respect really.

Playstation consoles tend to be different. Alot people have strange taste in games and alot people dont buy games for $60 especially when they hear about them being bad.

And the saddest part of this, the people that did the art, the 3D modelers and the people doing the lighting etc. did such an outstanding job. They made this game look really incredible, but they also suffer from these sales because the gameplay sucks.

Thank God it only sold 57,000 units. I would cringe if it sold over a million like that terrible game Bulletproof did. Maybe Factor 5 needs to add a rapper to its cover next time and people will buy it no matter how bad it is...
