8.5. Great score. This is an mmo and has alot of things that still need to be fixed. We all know they will be over the next 12 months or so. To get 8.5 is a massive acheivment considering it will always be compared directly with WoW, a game that has had years to be balanced and improved.

its a much better game than AoC, you have to read the review to understand why it got 8.5 and i totally agree. At its best WAR would be well over a 9 but the fun you get really is dependant on the server population.

I have played at off peak times and the experience is ok, not great but ok. At peak times with lots of people online its amazing, one of the best games i have ever played. Hence the 8.5.

its an MMO. Its not some 10 hour long game. I think i have played about 30 hours so far over 4 characters and still not scratched the surface.

It is extremely underrated

And the review was horrid.

To a person that hasnt played the game, this might seem normal. But believe me, an 8.5 is an insault to this game.

Seriously.

Ahh whatever, i dont really care about GS review. Its a big 10 in my mind for this game.

"Extreme PVP focus is detrimental to those looking to quest and play solo" What the hell, are you taking points off because of lack of solo play? In a freaking MMO?!! And yet, they count public quests as a good thing. Weren't public quests added to try to get people to play together?

I use xplay for the best reviews. Believe it or not they are more accurate than gamespot. They may put a game higher than I think it should be, but it's not nearly as bad as GS giving out low scores. I'd rather play a game said to be a 10 and it really is only an 8.0 game. Versus not playing a 10.0 game because GS says it's an 8.0.

GS sucks big time in reviews. Trust me all will come to that conclusion wiithin 1 year of reading them closely and being a hardcore gamer.

Yea the reviewer knocked off points for a stupid reason.

Personally WAR is the best MMO since WoW launched back in 2004 and it doesn't make since why it got a 8.5 (also got the same score as AoC wtf?).Upcoming MMOs aren't gonna have to just worry about WoW anymore their gonna have to worry about WAR and WoW aka Hercules and Zeus.

i also hate GS reviews but i actually agree with the score here. I love WAR dont get me wrong. I play alot of times when the servers are empty, as i work shifts at work. The experience i get is very very different from when they are populated.

For example. I played the other day, early morning after a night shift. I was in a queue for a scenario for 2 hours and never got to do one. I was the only person doing any PQ's and i tried them all in the area. I was left to go solo questing. This was fun but not great fun. When the server is well populated however i get one amazing gaming experience. I think this big dependancy on server population is a big flaw and the 8.5 is a result of that.

At its best WAR is well over 9, you just don't always get it at its best.

Well that is the problem, GS obviously feels there isn't enough of a balance with the solo portion of the game and that it is too PvP focused. It's not that PvP is bad, it's just that they were probably expecting more out of the solo part to make them balanced.

I think it'll be one of those games that sells well at first but then dies off rather quickly. Like Age of Conan, but not as bad.

It seems like GS loves to lump almost all MMO's into the 7.5 to 8.5 range. It's quite safe that way because of the way the whole scale is read nowadays. WoW is the exception because when it came out it shocked people with it's accessibility. It was actually fun in the beginning, hehe. But we must all understand that it's very hard for any reviewer to review an MMO. They have a very strict schedule, the review must get out in a decent time, that literally has them blowing throuhg maybe 5% of the game and trying to generalize based upon that. No, it's not a good method but reviewers are forced to do this by their employers.

I've just installed WAR... its patching as I type this... I hope I love it as much as I love WoW.

I have a Asia Pacific copy of the game.... I hope I have access to English Servers.

I'm just excited to explore a new world.... I've pretty much been everywhere and done everything in WoW. I've just been leveling up different classes in WoW lately, so I can have a lvl 70 for any situation.... currently have a 70 Warr, Shaman, Mage & Hunter... working on 54 Priest & 47 Paly now.

Any recommendations for a first char in WAR?

Thats true but i was thinking would have been much more convenient for them if they released at say the start of the year, so it could be out and establish a position in the MMo community. Now all those WOW people will be flocking back to WOW for lich king rather then finding a new game.

I'm mildly interested in this game, because in MMO's I find the (solo)questing to be the worst part(even though I do enjoy it), I enjoy the PVP or playing with/against multiple people alot more. I haven't followed this game much, as I dont play MMOs much anymore, but as I understand it you can just PVP until you reach cap, and that sounds really good to me.

While possible, the game itself would have pulled an AoC (Buggy, incomplete mess) if it had launched earlier this year. Basically it was a very tough situation for Mythic. Choice A - Launch a pile of garbage early. Choice B - Launch right before WotLK. Choice C - Push back until late next year. I think they made the right one overall.

I've chosen Dwarf (Tank)... still learning the ins & outs of combat, though they seem to have a similar style of fighting as the Rogue in WoW..... or at least at first glance it seems that way. By similar I mean, a certain amount of points that replenish over time, that allow you to use skills.

My next character will be an Offense Caster most likely. or Healer might be fun.... I enjoy healing people, and seeing as this is heavy on PvP, that could be alot of fun.

Once you actually start playing the class you'll understand that the Iron Breaker is nothing like the Rogue. The basic AP/regeneration system is standard throughout the game. Wait until you really get into the grudge system a little more and you'll see it's all about be hit and having your friends hit to build up power. Then take into account the short buffs you keep stacked (Form of twisting) and you'll see it is much different then the combo point system. The Witch Hunter is as close to the WoW Rogue as you'll get.

I haven't found a lot of things in WAR that I rate above WoW personally. The PVP aspect is nice, but from what I've seen I have the idea that there won't be any normal zones shared by order and destruction (like the pvp zones in WoW), which means that 1v1 pvp will be rare. The instanced PvP isn't really my thing (didn't like it in WoW either) and the open RvR is good when you got a good battle going, but most of the time there is only one side in the area and you're just killing the guards to get the objectives.

In the end, both of the games have their good and bad sides to the PvP aspects, but I wouldn't rate one above the other.

In terms on world design, art, combat and classes I'd definitely like WoW more then what I've seen from WAR. Though I do have to say that I'm still low lvl, so that might still change.

Listen, if you want a MMO that is really a single player game and all you want other people around for is to rip them off and brag about your epics to lowbies, you have your game. For people who want too actually work together for an actually goal that could actually happen in the game one day, let us have our game. Everything in war is Order vs Chaos. And every little thing you do helps the cause. Even if you just kill a low level mob that attacks on your way to somewhere, it means something. People are going hate on it because it looks like Warcraft and now thy are going hate on it because it doesn't play like Warcraft? :|

WAR is over rated. Even 8.5 is to high.

The bugs in this game alone make it horrible to play at times. It get's annoying trying to PVP then have people warp away from you. Or have a pet that vanishes out of thin air.

If they would have polished it more and worked the game killing bugs out before release, I would agree on 8.5.

WAR has me concerned. You get all the items you need from PVP. Leveling from 11-40 is painfully slow. There is a massive lack of content. Just doesn't seem like it will keep players there for long.

So far I have a level 11 Black Orc, lvl6 Disciple of Kaine, lvl3 Witch Elf, lvl3 Magus, lvl4 White Lion and a lvl10 Bright Wizard.

My take on the game is, if you want to get into MMO's start with WoW, everyone should try that game, Blizzard are Gods.

If you've been playing WoW on and off since launch like me lol, need something fresh and enjoy pvp War has Great potential.

WoW is an amazing pve game, and the pvp is atm still more tight, more refined, but what wars attempting with City Sieges and Keeps and stuff if pulled off well is going to be sick. I expect more of the hardcore players are going to try war, casuals will stay with WoW.

Its an MMO, they always have bugs on release. I remember WoW at launch, it had more bugs than WAR has. Hell Wow had some bugs that could even be exploited by players making some class's unbeatable at PVP. It took them years to get rid of that dreaded loot bug and almost every patch they seemed to introduce new ones.

Its the way things go with mmo's, always has and always will.

You can have fun in WoW playing Solo..... not so much with WAR, it seems..... so if you like playing your MMO's solo (most of the time) I'd steer clear of WAR

I really like the game, and have only scratched the surface of the game thus far. But it seems like the ENTIRE WORLD is made up of different instanced zones... So as I understand it, you'll never encounter enemy forces in your questing zones.... the only time you encounter them is in Realm vs Realm PvP....

I'm not really happy about that game design choice.... I like WoW's approach better.... even if it means getting ganked. But the world of WAR definately feels more alive than WoW. The NPC's have more personality, but then again, could they have any less personality than in WoW? Not really right!?

I'm also really confused atm how the crafting works in WAR.... but my 1st char is still lvl 6, so I'm still noobin' it oldskool style.

Anyway, WAR is at least the 2nd best MMO i've ever played.

If they would have polished it more and worked the game killing bugs out before release, I would agree on 8.5.

WAR has me concerned. You get all the items you need from PVP. Leveling from 11-40 is painfully slow. There is a massive lack of content. Just doesn't seem like it will keep players there for long.

Truth_Hurts_U

um. people were at 40 before the 3 day head start event :) i'm having NO trouble levelling whatsoever.

for those fearing this will end up like hellgate or age of conan - fear not. i've been with both, actually played every mmo that has hit major retail and then some so i have some basis of comparison, and i'm pretty picky. this is showing no signs of player drop-off like AoC did - my server in fact has steadily been increasing.

if you like PvP this game is rock solid. there are some launch bugs, but overall it is very polished. nothing is a game breaker in terms of bugs basically, not like AoC or Hellgate.

i was on the fence with this one and gave it a try and i'm not looking back - might even skip the wow expansion now and i was planning on picking it up.

Great score, but I've never really gotten into MMOs. It's one of the only genres where I just feel clueless.

I totally disagree with everything you just said except the crafting part. Crafting is a joke. Let me just say you are making the big mistake of comparing this directly with wow, they are totally different games, if you play this expecting a wow like experience you really will come away with a bad impression of WAR.

PvP is open world. Just not at the start. No area in WAR is instanced. Some PQ are open to both sides so you end up in a big fight with the opposite faction to complete it. You ofetn have to venture into the other sides areas to complete quests, often taking you right outside their camps. Then ofc you have the big open RvR areas on the game map. This game is designed for PvP, if you want a PvE game like WoW you really should not be playing WAR.

Alsoi i'd like to add, at no point other than on one occasion have i joined a group, i play solo, i take battlefield objectives solo and i quest solo. Ofc i play scenarios in a group.

I get the feeling you havn't played WAR very long and ar still in the first tier area's.

Trust me all will come to that conclusion wiithin 1 year of reading them closely and being a hardcore gamer.

stiltzsy

Yeah, right and xplay is better.

This outlines pretty much how i felt about the game, ontop of that the poor animations and bland enviroments for a 2008 game is just bad, they could of made much better use of what they had.

That being said, I dont see the obsession with PvP in RPGs/MMORPGs.... its boring imo.... its a numbers game, I dojnt mean chance because obviously all RPG's rely heavily on chance, but as in ZERG numbers are always going to win an RVR zone, so I dont see the point... theres no limited balance.

It's a fun game, 8.5 is a good score, but man I knew coming into this game I should not have gone order and I still did. The faction imbalances are just too silly as all those alliance from WoW think going Destruction in Warhammer will somehow make them better at pvp. Well they are just doing what they did in WOW, zerging. It's not fun being outnumber ALL the time :(. WoW is still the king until the KOTOR MMO trys to challenge it.

PvP-centric? I shall pass.

And the only high fantasy title for me is LotR:O. Personally waiting for the Mines of Moria expansion pack myself :D.

Still, the most unique and coolest MMO yet is Uru Live: Myst Online. It's probably the most player-influenced world out (the community randomly conducted a seance for hours and a flicker of a title character appeared -- awesome!), and it's a Puzzle-based MMO. Win!

Your right.... I jumped the gun a bit on somethings I said..... but saying you can't compare the game to WoW is absurd... they are both Fantasy MMO's, if we can't compare them to each other, then what can we compare them to?

I've only been playing a couple of days.... and am only lvl 7, I'm having fun with it, but still have lots to learn about the ins & outs of the game.

Though I am wondering, whats the point of all this PvP.... what difference does it make if The Order or Destruction controls an area? One side gets a few % higher XP or Renown from kills? WHOOPIE!?

I hope there are more sever consequences to losing areas and bigger rewards than that. Otherwise I can see myself going back to WoW pretty quickly.

It is extremely underrated

And the review was horrid.

To a person that hasnt played the game, this might seem normal. But believe me, an 8.5 is an insault to this game.

Seriously.

Ahh whatever, i dont really care about GS review. Its a big 10 in my mind for this game.

Frozzik

i also hate GS reviews but i actually agree with the score here.

Ahh the problem is your only queing for one scenario

I didnt realize it till about 5 days ago, that you can que up for all 3 of em.

I play when the servers are "low" (i game at night), and the scenario's run every couple minutes :P

-

And btw, im getting major lulz from you WAR haters (not the dude i quoted, the people ripping on it wihtout playing). Because seriously, you have no idea what ur missing. I suggest you guys experiance the game for yourslef, instead of hanging over 1 opinion. Youll c that this game is extremely fun :P

looks like a good game with a fair score
