Add one more studio to theBlu-ray camp

This isn't good news if MS decides to incorporate their HD-DVD drive in their future SKUs (rumored next 360) and next gen systems.

It's not like there will be more PS3s sold because WB switched. Besides, this whole war is rediculous and I just hope that they will eventually realize that and stop this whole thing.

It will definatley move more PS3s... it's the cheapest Blu-Ray player out there, and WB is the largest seller in the DVD market.

I love knews like this. Now all HD DVD has is Universal and Paramount/DreamWorks. While BR has everyone else plus Paramount.

And yes this is system war related system the PS3 has a BluRay player and the 360 will now come standard with an HD DVD player for the 360 uti

Yup BLU RAY wins. In most stores that is all you see now anyway when it comes to Hi-Def DVD's. And YES as Blu ray gets more popular so will the PS3. A lot of people will buy one to have both a gaming system and Blu Ray player much like myself this year. I'll be getting one in a few months.

After this, I seriously doubt that Microsoft will release an HD-DVD equipped console, unless, of course, they sucker people into buying one by somehow turning this into some sort of euphemism to make it look not quite as bad.

i find it odd they announced they are going blue ray exclusive but they are still making hd-dvd movies and releasing new releases on hd dvd until after april... seems to me they are not really all too sure yet. unless it has to do with their fiscal year and then it makes sense.

I think they will just take the hd dvd out.

A 360 with a 320gb harddrive and built in WiFi is still a good idea.

Yeah, definately. Hopefully they also drop the price of the HD-DVD add on soon too because of this. If it drops to a low enough price, i might well pick one up, since i think Paramount/dreamworks are contracted to be HD-DVD exclusive for another year or so.

Wow, Sony potentiallywinning a format war... Unbelievable eh?

Well if so, your not even the one making the switch if they hand it over for free or having it forced on you in some pack in. I meant the people who goes out and pay big money just for a Blue-Ray player so soon.

what happens when your 360 HD fills up? Gotta start deleting movies....and then when you wanna watch it again you gotta redownload it...seems more inconvenient than a disc to me. Alot of people still prefer hard copies of movies, not to mention most movies arent on Xbox Live. You make it sound like its Netflix at your fingertips when its not

Hate to be the devils advocate here, but this has alot to do with System Wars. Many people stand behind the belief that the DVD player in the PS2 is one of the main reasons the PS2 did so well. Everyone complained about the price and that DVD was just a gimmick but when it became a main stay, many casuals bought the PS2 as nothing more than a cheap DVD player. Devs saw the increase in PS2 sales and supported the PS2 alot more and those casuals that bought the PS2 for movies? Well, they thought "heck, why the hell not just buy a game for it. I mean i might as well!" and the rest is history.

So this could be same situation for the PS3. If Blu-Ray wins, alot of casuals may see the PS3 as a cheap Blu-Ray player and pretty soon we will have them saying "Heck, why not try one of these games" and pretty soon the rest wil be history :P

Maybe because there is a law that is going to force televesion stations to switch over to digital broadcasting by 2009. Go into best buy or any electronics retailer, and I want you to take into account how many SDTVs that you see compared to HDTVs. Being stubborn and holding onto sdtvs and DVD's is like people who are still using windows 95 or windows 3.1, or better yet horse and buggy sure it's still somewhat functional but yeah it's time to let it go.

none of those $300 players support profile 1.1, the PS3 is the only player that can be updated with firmware updates, which makes it the most appealing player.

Um, the movies are rentals. They expire after you watch them. I have tons of TV shows though that don't and I still have over 70GB of my 120 GB HD full. I don't think I will fill it anytime soon.

Wow that failed. Using DVDs over HD-DVD or Blue Ray at this point is not like using windows 3.1 or 95 over Xp or Vista at all. It would make more sense to compare it to use Xp over Vista in fact.

And using SDTVs over HDtvs at this point also doesn't have anything to do with being stubborn but how much you can affoard. If you look back a couple of years to the whole Betamax incident you have a living proof of why you shouldn't get on a ship too soon. I mean it's too early to call for a winner , if there is a winner at all. People as of this day still play and use a lot more DvDs than the other 2.

And you can buy a box without buying a brand new Tv even though HD is becomming more and more populare.

I got take this even further by saying. Look at the guys who bought a PS3 on release date for a blue ray player or whatnot, they payed, what how much? Compared to the guys who waited for about a year and maybe payed half of that.

Toshiba got blindsided

Their response

TOKYO, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ --

" Toshiba is quite surprised by Warner Bros.' decision to abandon HD DVD in favor of Blu-ray, despite the fact that there are various contracts in place between our companies concerning the support of HD DVD. As central members of the DVD Forum, we have long maintained a close partnership with Warner Bros. We worked closely together to help standardize the first-generation DVD format as well as to define and shape HD DVD as its next-generation successor.

We were particularly disappointed that this decision was made in spite of the significant momentum HD DVD has gained in the US market as well as other regions in 2007. HD DVD players and PCs have outsold Blu-ray in the US market in 2007. We will assess the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and evaluate potential next steps. We remain firm in our belief that HD DVD is the format best suited to the wants and needs of the consumer. "

There is nothing wrong with a game machine playing movies. But I strongly disagree that a console should be successful only because of it's movie function. Most everyone knows the PS2 beat the Dreamcast years ago because of the dvd player in it. I much preferred the DC myself and loathed the day I had to buy the PS2 to play games like GTA3. Then Xbox came along and had better graphics, technology, and online play. Still the PS2 had such a foothold it couldn't be toppled. Now I will be really disappointed if the PS3 gets popular just for it's movies. The only Sony product I loved was the PS1. It's focus was games and games alone. I really think Sony jumped on the money wagon with the PS2 and never got off. I'm just glad that a cheap non-movie playing console like the Wii is smoking Sony right now. It shows that gamers are speaking up and they want games and fun. Not expnsive HD movies.
