Of course. FF8 is still my favorite RPG and FF. FF 6, 7 and 10 are close seconds for favorite FF though.

What is ruining the game now for me is these two things : Triple Triad and the Junction system.
By playing TT it's possible to mod the cards you win into magic that you can junction. If you have any decent guide to help you, it's very possible to have a setup that'll last you the entire game. Magic is next to useless in this game.
If you want to know unbalanced this game is, I've defeated the Brothers and now have both ultimate weapons for Squall and Selphie with a average party level of 17.
And another thing is the rules of TT suck. Good luck trying to play TT when the other rules start coming in to play. I nearly ripped my own head off in frustration.
You can force rules into different regions if you know how. you shouldnt play the game with a guide first time through so most people arent likely to figure out how easy the game is when you can junction properly. What is ruining the game now for me is these two things : Triple Triad and the Junction system.

So by solid 8, do you mean the score you give it? Or the game? :PFF8 is pretty good. Flawed but good. Not as terrible as people make it sound but nowhere jear as good either. Solid 8 for me.

I'm a little surprised that I haven't seen a Spoony mention here!
As for my own opinion: I won't vote since I never played it. :P All I'll say about FF is, I've owned 7, 9, and 10, and only ever finished 9.

That's exactly what my problem is; for RPGs I have to play using a guide so as to get/do everything in one playthrough.
so good i tattoo'd it on my body... twice...

 I love that review but I'm a lot nicer to the game then he is and I dislike VIII too.
i didnt like it very much.
On thing i hated about it was that the enemies get stronger when you level up, so its almost useless.
Its like those rubberband AI's in racing games, but worse.
Final Fantasy VIII is by far my favorite Final Fantasy. Some of the most realistic characters in the series, probably one of the most original JRPG stories to date, a beautiful unique world, and excellent graphics as as well as art design.
That being said, I can't quite place the gameplay. It's often thought to be the most broken gameplay in the series and the easiest game overall. But this is because everyone grinds for hours by drawing 100 of each spell, then junctions them to become overpowered, and complains that the game is too tedious and too easy. I've never played the game any other way because it's fun to be overpowered or get Squall's later weapons very early into the game. I'm thinking of playing through a "normal" playthrough to see if not drawing 100 of everything balances the game out more.
But yeah, I still love it.
Edit: FFXIII would be a LOT better if whoever directed the cutscenes in FFVIII directed those in FFXIII.
I liked it as a kid, but I'm playing it now and my god is it horrible. Drawing magic is the stupidest thing ever, The characters are annoying, the story is boring, Squall is the biggest retard in any game I've ever played. How I liked this game before is beyond me

One of the only traditional "JRPG"s I truly enjoyed playing, despite never finishing. Granted, games like Parasite Eve, Front Mission 3 and Vagrant Story aren't games I would cIass as "traditional JRPG's".
I agree with most of what you said. The love story was very shallow.Worst FF of the gen with some of the least charismatic characters of the series, a *terrible* spell system that turned things into a grind worth of an MMO, an utterly forgettable antagonist, and complete with a juvenile love story perfect for reeling in the pre-teens. May be my least favourite FF game ever, actually. I literally had to force myself to finish the bloody thing.

This topic always offers the most wildy vdifferent opinions , ive always found so anyways, for me, its one of my favourites in fact and i love it , but for a lot of people they seem to think its crap, its quite clearly not crap, its all just opinions, people rag on the characters , well obviously they just didnt relate to those particular characters. It was about one to two years ago I did a regular SW series where I took a bunch of games that were controversal because people couldn't decide if it was good or not and asked SW if they were good or not, and now realize I left this one out.
Seriously, I never truly found out what is it about this game that has so many people either calling it the worst or best FF game ever. Can someone tell me?

Frankly, I loved FF8 and it was the only FF game ever that after playing for 70 hours, I didn't want to beat it yet so I started from scratch and played another 50 hours. I loved the game at the time.
To figure out why people love or hate it so much, you have to remember the timing back then. The PS1 had 3 FF games released for it within 5 or 6 years. That is unheard of for North America. Previously, the NES had 2 FF games and the SNES had 1 (or was it the other way around?). FF7 released at a time when gaming was breaking into the mainstream and a whoel crap-ton of new gamers were introduced to their first, big budget RPG. So a lot of the FF7 love/worship, in my opinion, is just nostalgia from people who look at this as their first RPG experience.
Further, FF7 was good in that it was easy to pick up and play, and get into, but was deep enough for hardcore RPG fans. So it appealed to everyone.
Then Square followed up with FF8, which had a much deeper and heavier story, and a much more complex battle system in the "draw" system. This angered a lot of the more casual gamers who thought FF7 was how all RPGs should be...easy and simple and not much to think about. It is easy to equip materia in 7, and way you want, and it leveled up with use. The draw system, by comparison was MUCH more work and required constant tweaking if you wanted to use it well.
Further, the story for 7 was very simplistic. I honestly look back at it as being completely shallow now even though, at the time, it seemed great. By comparison, FF8 had a crazy, confusing time travelling witch from another dimension. I think this story complexity/craziness turned off a lot of casual who enjoyed the light, fun, easy story of FF7.
Finally there is the characters. In my opinion, FF8 has a very interesting mix of characters who all seem realistic. While FF7 also had some great characters, they were mostly shallow and two dimensional and NEVER felt like anything more than children to me. But whether you like the characters from 7 or 8 better, 7 had a sense of fun about it while 8 was the exact opposite with everyone being very VERY serious and brooding the whole game.
My favorite final fantasy game.
It had a more mature plot that was easier to relate to with lots of political issues and a mix of similar culture with sci-fi elements.
The school aspect was cool and some of the towns were nice.
There are a lot of memorable parts I can name:
