I thought Morrowind was the worst IMO.
I loved exploring Oblivions world. It was gorgeous.
Skyrim is better than both however.
I think it's a great game. In fact, I recently pulled it out again to prepare for Skyrim. The combat isn't very good but everything else in the game is superb. Absolutely huge and detailed world to explore full of dozens of quests and thousands of characters to interact with. A very engrossing, and occasionally overwhelming, adventure. That isn't to say that it is without flaws though. The story is uninteresting and voice acting is rather bad for the most part, and it has no shortage of bugs.

Completely agree. /brofist
EDIT: Aside from the bug thing. I never had a problem with those.
Cringe-worthy voice acting, terrible facial animations which make it impossible for me to take anyone even remotely serious, incredibly clunky and stiff combat system. Just some of the reasons why I disliked it. Aside from that I found it to be boring as hell, the story never caught me and conversations with apparently soulless NPCs had me asking myself "why am I playing this?" over and over.
Wow, sucked bad man.
My brain literally shriveled up, crawled out my ear and died when I played that. And I loved Morrowind.
Red Dead Redemption totals it as an open immersive world, and it's not an rpg...

I am. Contrasting opinions are hard to take seriously, aren't they? ;)
I'm enjoying it (I'm playing thru it for the first time due to the 5th anniversary release). I'm purposely avoiding Skyrim until I'm done, but I'm having a hell of a good time with it so far.
Oblivion was a rubbish game with terrible VA and writing, awful combat, terrible exploration and just bad at everything. Skyrim while improved in most aspects suffers the same issue.
Oblivion was a game that did absolutely nothing very well. At all. Haven't played Skyrim so I can't comment on it properly. skrat_01
With the exception of guild quests, addition of dragons, writing (yeah, Skyrim's is even worse somehow) and the worst implementation of a perk system ever. Skyrim is superior to Oblivion.
Still, being doesnt change the fact that Skyrim sucks. Skyrim, just like Oblivion, does nothing well at all. Its combat is imbalanced as ****, its stealth mechanics are broken to say the least, the overworld is only slightly more interesting than the one in Oblivion, the dungeons are nearly as linear as CoD, its roleplaying elements are weak, the UI is some of the worst I have ever seen and overall, it is filled with questionable design chioces such as unlimited dragons.
[QUOTE="dommeus"]Why? Voice acting, dialogue, main quest, Oblivion gates, level scaling, atmosphere, generic setting, crappy combat, loads of bugs, omniscient guards, back seat final battle, Oblivion gates, copy pasted dungeons, handful of voice actors, pointless celebs, unrewarding exploration, s***ty magic system, levelling up in general, Oblivion gatesYeah it was pretty bad.
pl4yer_f0und
Nope. I thoroughly enjoyed vanilla Oblivion.
That isn't to say that Oblivion didn't have a LOT of issues :P

You pretty much summed it up there. But you forgot horribly bad animation aswell. Is there anything good about this game?
[QUOTE="6matt6"][QUOTE="pl4yer_f0und"][QUOTE="6matt6"]I have never played a elder scrolls game except for oblivion. What I got from the experience was cookie cutter world design with horrible voice acting, a terrible story, silly levelling system and a dull lifeless world.
I honestly don't understand what was so 'good' about it.savagetwinkie
After 5 years I would like someone to explain what this game does well without resorting to cop out arguments like 'IT HAS A HIGH SCORE ON METACRITIC' or the always frustrating 'YOU JUST DON'T GET IT MAAAAAAAAAAAN!!'
Thats the only reason I hate it, level scaling. Plus only 3 dungeon tileset, the world was very boring and when you've been in one dungeon, you've been in them all. You didnt have to work for any of your stuff, like as soon as you reached level 25 you can kill one bandit and get a full dradric armour set from it.It only gets hate for the level scaling, I don't think anyone would ever consider one of the most influential and popular games this generation to be "bad".

Ever since Skyrim was anounced, theres been a lot of hate for Oblivion. Many people were saying that Morrowind is better than Oblivion in almost every way. But how? Oblivion was my first ES game and I loved it, spent hundreds of hours in it doing all the quests finding all the artifacts, and exploring the area. It did have flaws, animations were weak, story was mediocre, stats system was too complex, character models and voice acting were bad, but Morrowind had its flaws too. It's stat system was too complex, the combat was just plain horrible, the UI could have been better, and your character's strength seems to rely too much on your equipment.
I'm not saying that either game is bad, if these minor flaws get in the way, your missing the point in playing ES games. I'm just saying that Oblivion was a great sequel to Morrowind, and that it is not nearly as bad as people make it.
pl4yer_f0und
Morrowind is still way better than both Oblivion and Skyrim imo
i can see people not liking it if they just played it but wow, by spring 2006 console standards that thing was amazing.
94 metacritic says amateur haters can **** it.
i have plenty of nitpicky gripes my damn self but really it is one of the best games of the entire gen.
Sure, level scaling sucked but in 2006, Oblivion was AAA all the way :o, well, at least about 75% through the game but after that, it did get a bit umm, underwhelming to me. :P
But don't you think the Oblivion gates are a little tedious to go through? shalashaska88They were tedious, you're right. It was because there were so many of them, and the reward at the end was so meager. Now, if we could have had an epic dragon-battle at the end (which would also clue you to where the end of the gate was), I would have been satisfied. A few less gates would have been nice, yes.
This times a million.Oblivion is awesome. It had it's flaws(the story wasn't good, the level scaling was stupid as hell, the voice acting is laughable at best and cringe-worthy at worst), but it was still a fine game. People just like to give it crap because it wasn't Morrowind 2, just like there were people that gave Morrowind crap for not being Daggerfall 2.

My second time through the game, I deliberately set aside the main storyline until the end of the game. I didn't visit Kvatch at all. I played all the quests with no Oblivion gates, and it was bliss. I loved Oblivion, but the gates were annoying.

Assuming you're talking about HL2, how is it a masterpiece? So many things wrong with the game, bad guns, bad story, terrible ai, boring vehicle sections.SW doesn't like masterpeices it seems (MGS4, Oblivion, Half Life) damned haters :x :x
Mozelleple112
As for Oblivion, the level scaling, repetitive dungeons, and awful main quest killed it for me.
While I agree with your point, the fact that you're making it in this Oblivion thread is a little off the beaten path. This is a recipe for disaster. Maybe I'll just bash oblivion as well!
exactly what this guy said right here. Still for the life of me i can't get through Oblivion, i'll try at some point, but i just get so damn boring. Feels so generic and lifeless. Skyrim for whatever odd reason i do not feel this way at all, they made a lot of really great improvements in getting you immersed in the world. One problem I have is how thin its spread. Its the same issue I had with GTA San Andreas, in that there is a lot to do, but none of it excels. The combat is kinda boring, the dialogue is average, voice acting is recycled heavily, the story is passable and the world just doesn't feel too alive. At the very least, Fallout 3 was WAY better (having more voice actors and a better story), and the dead feeling world makes sense in a post apocalyptic wasteland.
SPYDER0416
Yes. Still can't believe how a game like that could get anywhere near an 8 range score, but somehow the reviewers all dumped 9+ scores on it.
