@Pffrbt: the hunger games and hannah are terrible films and awful female protagonists.

All katniss does is cry, and run away and sulk etc.

Female protagonists are just not as convincing as male.

Seriously hunger games was a terrible film, and hannah wasn't any better.

Males dominate for a reason to star in action movies and games, there just better and easier to immersion your self into the experience.

They're both great movies with fantastic protagonists that get shit done without sacrificing their depth as characters. Katniss in particular is a great protagonist. I can't even begin to imagine how such awful opinions are possible.

It seriously just sounds like you dislike women with any kind of agency or depth as a character, which explains why you like Lara Croft as she has neither and spends the entire game getting pulverized.

That's curious, because the people raising these issues are nearly always 'outsiders looking in'

I would imagine anyone from a demographic that's consistently ignored by the vast majority of the game industry is an "outsider looking in".

"who profile themselves as writers on 'gender' and other such issues, who write about games only to be able to push their views into this playing field."
This is outright untrue as I can think of numerous people that would agree that there needs to be more diversity in game protagonists that are none of what you described.

"I have literally never heard a female or gay gamer complain that they couldn't play as a female or gay character in whatever game."
I have. There's literally no way you could've avoided the discussion surrounding Tomodachi Life. I've found it tiresome myself to play as yet another straight/white guy.

No, as there is a difference between someone who is a gamer who is annoyed by this, and someone who is into gaming/video game journalism in order to make a point regarding gender. The latter seem over-represented. The article at hand is an excellent example of this.

"This is outright untrue as I can think of numerous people that would agree that there needs to be more diversity in game protagonists that are none of what you described."

Then how come articles calling for this to happen primarily appear on feminist gaming blogs instead of mainstream outlets? The latter may discuss it, but rarely do they actually advocate the points of the feminist or homosexual movements.

"I have. There's literally no way you could've avoided the discussion surrounding Tomodachi Life. I've found it tiresome myself to play as yet another straight/white guy."

Actually, I have been able to avoid the entire discussion. I heard about it through American outlets such as this one (because this whole straight/white privilege farce seems to be the current fad in some American cities), but the few people here who actually knew about it dismissed it as a non-discussion.

All look "virtually" the same. That is literally as dumb/idiotic/racist as saying all Asians look the same.

What the actual **** internet....

In fairness they do all look very similar. Differing ages and levels of facial hair but yeah. They look very similar.

I am seeing "tall dark and handsome". I am seeing weathered skin. I am seeing graying hair. I am seeing scars. I am seeing facial hair.

Even so this article is a joke.

@Pffrbt: seriously, hunger games and hannah are two of worse films I've seen in recent times, catching fire was marginally better than the first one but still terrible.

I thought lara had more depth than katniss, katniss I couldn't care less about and she was so annoying in catching fire I would have liked a twist were she didn't make it, it would have pissed off fans of the book too.

@Pffrbt:

Why would I reitterate what has litterally just been stated?

I'm not against females in games, that'd be ridiculous; but in the context of the Watchdogs "controversy", we're moving beyond the pale.

I'd never demand to be able to choose playing as Larry instead of Lara and I did buy FFXII "despite" the main character being female (buyers remorse, but I digress).

The big publishers seem to think that the majority of their consumerbase is male and prefer playing as male, so they try appealing to that.

I prefer male leads as well and I refuse being ashamed about it. I have an easier time relating to my own damn gender and we're probably having discussions like this because females feel the exact same way.

I liked the new lara, she seamed normal and out of her depth but her character gradually grew stronger out of necessity.

She basically has no personality though. All of her character development happens in the span of a few seconds in one cutscene, where she goes from being a "vulnerable" woman to being the fucking Terminator. The rest of her "character development" and "personality" is just her having the shit beaten out of her.

"But in general female protagonists do suck most of the time, look at films lately like Hunger Games, Hannah, Twilight(Kind of in the last film)"

The protagonists of The Hunger Games and Hanna are fantastic though, so I don't really see what you're talking about. Both of them are miles better than Lara Croft. All of the characters in Twilight are awful and Kristen Stewart is a bad actress, so that hardly counts.

"Games don't fair any better either."

Unfortunately games don't get as many female protagonists as movies, but they have had some great ones. Bayonetta is one of the best protagonists from last generation.

"Also its safe to say were all gamers on this forum, what % of the members here are female I'd hazard a guess its less than 48%"

I don't think the percent of gamers on Gamespot is really relevant to the actual total in general.

We're going to have to disagree on those movies. They're awfull and not because they have female leads, but because they're teenage power fantasies, coupled with emotion porn.

Most men dislike them because they're clearly targeting young girls, but the characters are bad regardless of gender.

Also, it's funny you mention Bayonetta, because she fueled controversy as well and I do hope you mean she's one of the best in a campy sense ;)

Whoever wrote that article went full retard! Theres nothing wrong with how aiden looks and i really doubt that female gamers play games because they want to fall in love with the main character of the series or any character for that matter....If i was a female gamer i would take that as an insult as well!
