We Happy Few started a few years back as a survival game with a very unique post-war setting and a strange but interesting social conformity system.

Bobby's will hurt you if you don't conform
Bobby's will hurt you if you don't conform

Only issue was it was let down by its lack of a story, and the survival elements just didn't cut it.

So the devs started working on a real story mode after they heard people's outcry. With the intro being shown off at MS' E3 2016 conference, and wowing people.

The devs again, saw the reaction from people and knew this was the right path to take, so they have begun increasing the scope of the team and game over time, to deliver people that joyous drug fueled trip (aka story mode)

We Happy Few is releasing in April 2018 on PC, Xbone and PS4.

It's no longer a small indie game, it's a full AAA release with a publisher.

I was wondering what happened to this game. It definitely has that BioShock vibe to it, and that alone is enough for me. Glad it's coming to PS4 too.

For some reason I thought this was already released and I actually looked for it a few weeks back to buy it.

I'll check out the new update tomorrow.

Always liked the style of the game, and I liked roaming the city, interacting with the characters. It was weirdly fun. But it's still crafting/survival game, which isn't bad, but it's not what I want from this game. And it's why I'm looking forward to the story.

It's out in early access, and actually they had a playable version back in 2015.

But the game has changed a lot since it has been out, with more focus going into the story mode of the game, and less focus being on the survival aspect (it was just a full survival game at first)

When the game releases next year it'll have a full story mode. Right now the early access version has some story missions, but far from everything.

Yeah same here, I was really sold on the character/Style of the game when it was first shown.

The E3 demo of last year blew everyone away, and they showed something everyone wanted.

But when it first launched in early access it was kinda 'eh'. Like a been there, done that feeling with scavenging and survival.

I'm gonna check out the early access game as birdwatcher (meaning the survival elements are toned down) and just look at the current build. Don't want to spoil the story so much as I'm gonna wait for next year to fully enjoy the story :)

Sounding good to me... I'm glad it's getting fleshed out more with a campaign.

Same here, a story mode is the full realisation of the world and setting.

Just being a survival game would mean a lot of that interesting and unique storytelling would go to waste.

Yeah the devs even know they are being compared to Bioshock a lot ^^

The gameplay is however different though, with focus on a melee combat system. (no shooting or power as far as I've seen)

But the setting and story is definitely something that could come straight out of the Bioshock universe.

Good, tired of these stupid survival games where you "create your own story". They aren't bad as long as they are sold at 20 bucks, but any more than that and it's usually a rip off.

The only survival game I really liked so far was The Forest, but that game has a story, so that helps. It's also only 15 bucks, so that really helped.

Good, because the framerate was abysmal on Xbone.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of Survival games either, and there are thousands trying to copy ... I dunno, did minecraft start it ? Or rust or the likes ? Dunno but most feel like lifeless clones and tedious busy work.

I have enjoyed Don't Starve though, it was a light and whitty game.

Currenly I'm playing Mad Max and I like the survival elements there. Gathering food and water (for your HP bar) actually fits the barren wasteland you find yourself in.

Yeah optimization wasn't the best on PC either, last time I played.

They should really work on that, and now is the point where they start polishing and optimizing the game I hope :)

Yeah, these survival games were fun, initially, but after a while, they all become the same tedious slog through building crap and collecting/mining ingredients.

Also, if you play the MP of these, it usually ends up being you building a small base, then some no-lifers with assault rifles and all this crazy shit come and destroy you and your base repeatedly until you leave and find a new server. Either that, or you end up playing on your own server with some friends and without any PVP of any kind, and it just gets boring as hell. You're crafting and creating stuff, but what for? You got this base finally set up, but now there's nothing to do with it.

The Forest was really the only game that seems to have captured a useful feel for the crafting, because the natives come by and eventually attack you, so having a decent base is a must.

Yeah the survival aspect can work if there is some real dread lurking around.

If it's just having to do tedious stuff like mining 1.000 resources to make the most simple things like a fucking spear than I'd rather play games that have streamlined gameplay and where it's actual fun to do.

Still these games seem to do really well on Steam, even to this day.

I always thought MS should lock this down.

These guys made contrast right? One of the most memorable games this gen for me.

I never played contrast. But it also had a very interesting ideas.

Glad to see these devs (compulsion) increasing in scope with each new game release.

It's hard to fathom this 10 person strong team had a game idea almost as brilliant as something like Bioshock ! :O

Good that they're still working on it. Last I saw, it looked like a really cool concept that still needed a ton of fleshing out before it became a fun game.
