While Stalker: CoP doesn't look top notch in all areas, it excels in the areas that will further convey the atmosphere to the player. The visuals are fantastic in this regard. And here's a pic from my PC.

I agree. Great screens, emphasizing some very high quality textures.
May I ask what settings are used?

Maxed in DX10. :)
Its pretty much the same in DX11 too except it runs much better

Well that would be because its a better card overall, DX11 itself would be more taxing overall I'd imagine.Yeah, I think just about anyone had thier fill with run of the mill shooters, with worn out premises, and so toothless, that the game almost apologises when you take a hit -.-
It is also nice to see games where so many things are considered. I am not sure why anyone should not want that?
Sure these games might not have as broad appeal as the easy to use, play and understand shooters that comes dime a dozen, but the games like STALKER (and Metroid prime which was also mentioned in the thread) feel so much more interresting (a game having a soul?).
As for Metro 2033, it is fairly linier, not alot of exploring, the only exception to this is when you are above ground, but even then it is not wise open (there was alot of confusing contradictions about this), But it does have some of the core elements that makes stalker so good, so even if stalker cant/wont be done on console, I am fairly sure Metro 2033 will somehow be an equalant in the areas that matters, it is always reffered to as "hard" and "unforgiving".
The lighting plays the same kind of role, and as far as the information of that game goes, also the unnatural plays a big role.
But it is a corridor shooter, and I doubt you are able to make impacts on the world like you are in stalker...
And nothing in a game has ever resembled the cautious walking at night, listening to your giger counter and anomolty detectors haulting "ticks" while a thunderstorm is brewing, Only to find something not quite human anymore slowly beginnign to move infront of you... Such an awesome feeling...
Also the feeling of Isolation, and the knowlage that you only have yourself to rely on, and yourself to blame if things go wrong... So effin Epic ^^
STALKER it aint , but it is somewhat in the same gray area, of artistics, and emotional connection to the player.
Kinda wish CoP gets ported to console tho (glad I aint the one who needs to configure those controles). Since it as a genre is an oddity that I would like to see expanded upon in general (First person Survival). Kinda like the Hardcore version of FO3 in some ways :P
There's an issue about CoP that if you have a 32-bit cpu and less that 4Gb of RAM you cannot use the highest texture quality setting, and the graphics look worse than Clear Sky. If you have a 64-bit cpu and 4 or more Gb of RAM it looks on par. Completed CoP recently and have to say that it is the most refined stalker game to date that is good without mods. But I dunno if it is my favorite. Shadow of Chernobyl was unpolished, bug-ridden, and had horrible graphics, but it had really memorable locations compared to CoP. The atmosphere in SoC was far more menacing and scary than in CoP, and the SoC chilling ambient soundtrack is a league of it's own.I know I might be the minority on this one, but did anyone think that Clear Sky looks better then Call of Pripyat graphics wise? I played both at DX9 maximum settings and just see better looking textures, lighting, and shadows in Clear Sky.

I never played Clear Sky... to many bad things heard.
Im playing it right now, its not bad at all. Not the best in the series but still alot of fun.
I'm always baffled by those who say the game looks dated. Other than the character models (which aren't even that prevalent in the game) it looks oddly realistic. The textures are absurdly detailed and super sharp, all three games hold up very well to scrutiny in the technical graphics department. The lighting engine and shadows are probably the best i know of.
Its tough to capture how good this game looks in screenshots, it looks infinitely better while playing (you won't notice some of the weaker things because you will be busy gawking at all the amazing stuff). The TC did a pretty good job of highlighting the visual strengths, although someone should post a night-time screenshot during a flash of lightning (hard to take - i have a few on my gaming rig but i'm on my laptop right now).
CoP is the best game in the series mostly because of how polished and well designed it is compared to the previous 2 games, I could go on for ages about how immersive it is, how the difficulty is pitch perfect unlike in the overly-difficult Clear Sky, how the atmosphere draws you in and makes you feel super uneasy yet in wonder at the empty, decrepit concrete jungles you walk through, but since the post would be so long no one would read it, and my musings would be wasted.
As for anyone wondering if they will like Clear Sky, it is easily the weakest game in the series, the focus is on combat between factions and not on the atmosphere, its even buggier than the original (many people, including myself, were unable to finish the game because of various broken quests and game breaking bugs), but if you like the gameplay of Stalker its worth checking out. Its insanely difficult (even on the easiest difficulty setting), but still has some great moments.
There are really no other games quite like Stalker, and if other developers attempt to make similar games its hard to imagine what the result would be. I think more developers should go for the all-out immersive experience though, like the one found in this game and Mafia, but with game mechanics that help with the immersion instead of breaking it (like the save system in GTA IV).
Yep...small PC euro devs have been recently delivering awesome immersive experiences. Tension/Void, STALKER: CoP and Cryostasis last year were all awesome :) Amnesia and Red Orchestra 2 should do the same this year.
And I guess Sh5 too, from the preview build I've played it turned into FPP RPG sim :)

Well thay blows, I wish I would have know that before I beat the game...

Though I still prefer SH's lighting and shadows.
I am thinking of playing the entire trilogy (purchase from Steam). However, I heard that Clear Skies is extremely buggy. Has that game been patched up or should I ignore that game?

No bugs for me on my playthrough, and Quicksave is your friend in the STALKER seires:).
You can buy both COP and CS for 30$ on steam. you have to buy CS for 10$ and buy COP(Loyalty Promo) for 20$.
Make sure to install the 2009 complete mod for SOC. It basically brings Stalker up to COP and CS standards.

Interesting. Fortunately I have 4 Gb of RAM and 64 Bit Win 7.
Is it just me or does the cover look like it came out of the mid 90s? Everything else looks fine though.SpiritOfFire117
True, the western cover is teh suck.
I like the Russian one more:
Which is based on this statue from Prypiat:

GSC is small only judging by the number of employees, and that's after half the team left back in 2005. They made some multi-million sellers like Cossacks, which I like a lot more than Age of Empires.
Heres some screens from my lower end comp no AA on this either!
32 Bit Windows XP, 2GB Ram, 4800 Duel CoreCPU, the legendary 8800GTX.

Thought that was real life for a second there. And then reading your comment about how its on a low end PC left me
Its funny hearing console sheep constantly comparing games to Crysis graphically. Lets get past Stalker first.
bingo, the thing is so many games come out and i can't dig deep into stalker it stinks because it IS funI've started playing through STALKER: SoC again, then it's on to Clear Sky, and then i'm buying this game :D
lundy86_4
I tried Stalker (original) a year or so ago, and I just couldnt get into it.... it seemed like a game I would enjoy, when described to me, I dunno what went wrong...
these screens make me want to try the original again, to see if I can make myself like it. I hate starting out in a series on the 2nd or 3rd game... so if I get CoP I'd need to play through the 1st two games beforehand.

I'm exactly they same. I'm hoping to finish before FFXIII.
The 2009 Complete mod really helped me get back into it.

Download the 2009 complete mod. It does everything from improving graphics and textures, to fixing weather cycles, improving AI and fixing a variety of bugs.

No game breaking bugs for me either on Clear sky, I dont understand why people hate it so much. Sure its my least favorite of the 3, but its still a very good game in its own right imo.

I haven't finished Call of Pripyat, but Clear Sky was brilliant. I also don't understand why it is disliked so much. I guess it might have something to do with the fact I only got around to playing it almost a year after it was originally released, but it looked Phenominal and ran amazing. Nice thread, amazing pics too TC.Please Log In to post.
