MS, the real for the gamers by the gamers eh?

C'mon Sony, the ball, erm, Car's in your court... Do it. :P

Edit: I think Nintendo and the NX needs to get in on this as well. Wasn't there saying last gen. Let's Play Together? hehe

The Story.

"We're Ready," Microsoft Says About Xbox One-PS4 Cross-Play

"We've done our bit and we welcome anyone who wants to take part."

An Xbox boss has come out to say again that Microsoft has the technological pieces in place to support Xbox One-PlayStation 4 cross-play and now all that's left to do is sort out the politics of the mater.

ID@Xbox Europe boss Agostino Simonetta told Eurogamer that, as we've heard before, Psyonix's Rocket League may be the first game to support Xbox One-PS4 cross-play. But as for when it will happen...

"As a platform we don't force developers to release at any point--it'll be when the developers are ready."

You won’t believe who Oracle looks up to

Microsoft

Asked directly if all the technology required for Xbox One-PS4 cross-play was in place, Simonetta said, "Absolutely--we're ready. Rocket League is the first game--and it is a heavily network-orientated game.

"Any title that wants to update their game to include cross-network play, any title that wants to launch soon and take advantage of that, we are ready."

Simonetta reiterated that Microsoft has extended an invitation to any network that wants to connect to Xbox Live, including PlayStation Network. Asked if Simonettea has heard any encouraging news on this front (he used to work at Sony), he only said, "We can only say: we're ready. We've done our bit and we welcome anyone who wants to take part."

Eurogamer's interview with Simonetta also touches on the Xbox One's new devkit functionality and more. Go here to read it.

In March, Microsoft made the announcement that it will support cross-platform play between Xbox One, Windows 10, and other "online multiplayer networks." The move effectively opens the Xbox Live platform so that it can accommodate players on Sony's PlayStation Network, among others.

Rocket League was announced as being one of the first games to support Xbox One-PC cross-play (there was no cross-play support for Rocket League's Xbox One edition at launch), while the invitation has been sent to Sony as well.

"In addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we're enabling developers to support cross-network play as well," Microsoft's Chris Charla explained at the time.

"This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks--including other consoles and PC networks."

Later in March, Psyonix boss Jeremy Dunham talked about the benefits of connecting Xbox Live and PlayStation Network for Rocket League, adding that the only thing left to work out was the politics of the arrangement.

Although Microsoft has extended an invitation to other platforms and networks to connect with Xbox Live, Sony has not yet committed to opening up the PlayStation Network to Xbox players.

Responding to Microsoft's invitation, Sony issued an encouraging but indecisive statement.

"PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002," it said. “We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play."

I guess the only game most would want this is COD.

If Activision makes it, then maybe all the rest will follow.

I hope Sony doesn't fall for this nonsense, they need people to play with on multiplayers because of their slow console sales. MS hasn't said outpacing the 360 in many months.

This would be great, lots of co-op/multiplayer games would benefit. Especially a game like Evolve where it seems dead on all platforms, could be United to increase player base. The competition between the console players would help keep games relevant and alive longer. System Wars would be on a whole new level. System Wars gaming night, xbox one vs ps4. This would be a huge gain for gamespot and the community.

That's exactly what I was thinking, that would breathe new life into games like Evolve where the community is split and small on all consoles. Combine the community and games like that would thrive.

But of course fanboys look at this as a ploy from MS to trick them into doing something sooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad LOL. I'm stilled baffled by their logic.

It would be cool for a few games in the spirit of friendly rivalries, I have a few PS4-only friends in real life I could play against. Also, as another poster said for games with dwindling online populations like Evolve, it would be beneficial as well.

Regarding the dead community comments for XBL, this is not true at all as I have no problems quickly getting into online games when I play. Not to mention that late ports like Rocket League sold very well on XOne, 1M units in less than 1 month from release, if I remember correctly. I remember playing RL on day one of the XOne release, and it had 65K players logged in. No issues finding people to play with on XBL. If Sony shuts the door on this, no big deal and life goes on.

There isn't any double standard here. PC doesn't need any assistance, they are not lacking any players for games.

I just don't get the mentality of gamers................correction the mentality of fanboys at all. Anything that the other company comes up with it always meet with a negative reaction no matter what it is. If Sony was the first to say this I bet they would be all over the place in here and other forums saying Sony is for the gamers, MS is evil, they hate us, they hate the community and blah blah blah but it's MS that's pushing it and it's a trick LOL. Thank god I have sense to think objectively.

Microsoft is smart, they put Sony in tight spot when they announced this and now if Sony doesn't do it, they will look bad.

Microsoft are not doing this for the gamers and Sony has nothing to gain from this.

Will this be good for us gamers? Absolutely, but from a business perspective Sony is wise to hold off.

Whatever the reason MS is doing this, it does in the long run benefits gamers though and helps games that would have a smaller online community across 2 or 3 platforms.

Oh there are MASSIVE double standards here...through the roof. XBL and PSN doesn't need any assistance either. They are both at their highest levels that they have ever been. It's not about lack of players, it's about gamers and connecting them. More options > Less options.

It's been ready for at least 5 years.

The problem is that both companies don't agree on how security and enforcement should be handled.

Microsoft says they're all in now because they want to dictate everything, that's laughable.

Whelp, PS4 players could gain Big Time since all XBL games are on dedicated servers so ya know, they shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. :P

I'd be really happy if this happened. I have friends who have only the PS4 or the Xbox One, or a Nintendo console (or PC) so it's often a gamble of me buying the game where I think it will run a little better or where I think my friends are going to get the game. Being able to play Battlefront and Destiny with my friends who picked it up on Xbox One would be great since I have those games on PS4.

If most of friends from last generation have moved to the PS4 this generation, then to play with them you will need to get a PS4. If Sony does this then that advantage would be taken away.

Pretty smart PR move. If Sony gets in on this then all gamers benifit and it's yet another pro consumer move from MS. If Sony backs away and runs(which they will) MS will make them look like liars.

I doubt Sony are brave enough to step in the cage. They rather cater to their loner gamer consumers and give them single player VR experiences than support more cross-play multiplayer battles. The term cow was also derived from "cow"ards so it's not a surprise if Sony and their fans are too scared to step up.

Isn't Sony about the gamers as everyone likes to say in here. They give gamers what they want so why not open up the online field for everyone to play with each other.

LOL! Sony and Nintendo allowing cross-play between platforms way before MS. MS is late to the party. Now they're trying to look nice when they said they're ready. Sony and Nintendo are ready for a few years now.

Just to clarify things, Sony & MS are all about business and making money. Sony/MS hardly cares about the console wars as much as gamers have been lately, if Sony sees this as good for business and get more money out of this cross-play, they will gladly take this deal. At the end of the day, it's all about business, plain and simple.

Isn't Sony about the gamers as everyone likes to say in here. They give gamers what they want so why not open up the online field for everyone to play with each other.

Yeah, there is nothing wrong with being for the gamers, but you have a business to run. They could and probably would lose consoles sales, so from a business stand point, they should say no.

What does Sony have to gain?

Why do you care about that? What is your stake in their gain?

I don't care and why would you care if I did? It is a legitimate question.

@silversix_: I would be honored to get invaded and get slain by your sword in 900p while you slay me in 1080p! Then I'll trade it in towards Battleborn after raging from even trying a Dark Souls game.
