For me it would have to john Carmack. The amount of work and effort that man has done for gaming is staggering. He has created new tech and enw ways of doing things very consistently. His efforts are some of the most renowned in gaming. He is a wizard with technology. If only every dev had the knowledge and ability he had. Games would probably look better nowadays.

So who do you think has been the most influential?

Pretty much. It'd either be Shigeru or Carmack.

Carmack has had a huge impact... but he is eclipsed very easily by Miyamoto. PC gaming would have survived had Nintendo not released the NES... but gaming would never be the same without Mario.

ehhh...not really. he just made Half Life and the Source Engine. (and of course, Steam). but the other beloved franchises that used Source like Counter-Strike, Portal, etc. were jsut really mods and from other people outside Valve. even the idea of Left 4 Dead was not originally Gabe's or Valve's.

Miyamoto, on the other hand, made Zelda, Mario, Donkey Kong, etc. heck, even Mario inspired the creation of Sonic. Zelda was the very first game that is for the home. Mario, DK, everything back then can be found on arcades. but Zelda came along and it was too long for the arcade, that's why it was made for the consoles. and not only that, but it also had a save feature. also, it spawned the creation of open-world games. you can literally go and explore anywhere in Zelda, on caves adn dungeon or just on plain grass. very revolutionary. it was the first game that does not have a 'High Score' label on the upper part of the screen. you just progresss.

Im surprised nobody has said Ralph Baer yet. He invented the first videogame console (the Magnavox Odyssey) and helped create the game industry. Every console since then exists because of Baer's invention.

Yeah because a character designer changes the gaming world... Yeah fair his directing on Advent Children was great and Versus 13 is looking great... but c'mon...

Advent Children was awful. It was completely incohenrent.

I'd say Shiggy for sure. Carmack IS a genius though.

I agree about John Carmack. FPS > PlatformerMystery_Writer

Except Carmack and ID haven't released anything ground breaking for over a decade.. Their last game was Doom 3 and its expansion.. And it was considered a great fps that was overshadowed by superior games like Farcry and Half-Life 2..

slayersboxer :D Maybe in a few years.

In all seriousness, Carmack. He revolutionized gaming and practically invented the online FPS.
