[QUOTE="Mystery_Writer"]I agree about John Carmack. FPS > PlatformersSubZerOo
Except Carmack and ID haven't released anything ground breaking for over a decade.. Their last game was Doom 3 and its expansion.. And it was considered a great fps that was overshadowed by superior games like Farcry and Half-Life 2..
Doesn't matter if they were overshadowed by it. id invented the FPS genre. So your point is invalid because without id and carmack there would be no half life or far cry. Carmack has managed to get a game like rage which looks great and make it run at 60 fps on consoles. Thats amazing to me. Still waiting for doom 4 and half life 3 though :P

A) So are we to point out the creators of ALL the genres out there? Why is FPS genre considered the most important.. B) Your taking this from hype and presentations meant to build advertisement so you buy the game first day.. As it stands ID hasn't made anything noteworthy for a very very long time, what ever happened to the "wait and see" strategy.. Especially from a company that has been so inactive..
Miyamoto. I wouldn't argue with anyone if they say Carmack though, the man is a genius.
theuncharted34
I would :P. Miyamoto >>>>>>>Carmack

Problem is that Carmack programs and creates only FPS games whereas Shigeru Miyamoto creates platformers, action adventure games, sci-fi racers, kart racers, strategy(Pikmin), etc.:( I can't choose between Shigeru Miyamoto and John Carmack, it's gotta be one of the two. Hideo Kojima is a great dev, but Miyamoto and Carmack have influenced the technology and ideas behind other games even today, the industry wouldn't be the same without them.

The tech he invented is the father of ALL game rendering today, before the whole frame was redrawn, after him, only what was updated was drawn, allowing PC's (at the time less powerful than consoles) to render side scrollers, and allowing games to progress in quality substantially there after w/o costing more performance.
This is also how video codecs work, only redrawing updated areas, to save on space, dramatically. I wonder if he was the inspiration or was inspired by these... dunno much 'bout them.

Carmack and Miyamoto really are incomparable. Carmack is more of a master programmer while Miyamoto is more of a master designer. They play different roles in the video game industry.Ah once again people giving John Carmack credit for John Romeros work
stay classy everyone
John Romero made Doom 1/2, Quake, he was the lead dev, Carmack made the engine, Romero and the rest did everything else
John Carmack made the mediocre Doom 3 after Romero left
Im surprised nobody has said Ralph Baer yet. He invented the first videogame console (the Magnavox Odyssey) and helped create the game industry. Every console since then exists because of Baer's invention.

Becuase Sheepspot does not want to admit there were games/game systems before Nintendo/the NES.

First does not necessarily mean most influetntial. One could argue without Nintendo there would be no console gaming.
For me it would have to john Carmack. The amount of work and effort that man has done for gaming is staggering. He has created new tech and enw ways of doing things very consistently. His efforts are some of the most renowned in gaming. He is a wizard with technology. If only every dev had the knowledge and ability he had. Games would probably look better nowadays.
So who do you think has been the most influential?
seanmcloughlin
I would say him too. Actually, it was the first name that popped on my mind.
I not even a Nintendo fan, but Shigeru Miyamoto has made a huge impact on gaming.i5750at4Ghz
This is even up for a 4 page debate??? OF course it's Miyamoto, there wouldn't BE a gaming industry without Miyamoto and Nintendo...

Richard Garriot.

Ultima fan are we?
THat's not the point. I mean..Miyamoto is giant, but he hardly influenced anything in computer gaming, Meier is genius too, but he hardly influenced anything in console gaming.Bassicaly Garriot is the only one who's influence is seen on all platforms.

Garriot pretty much invented computer RPGs with Akalabeth.
My vote goes to Miyamoto, Carmack, Garriot, Baer, Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney (Atari co-founders).
getting sick of people giving that code monkey Carmack credit, John Romero invented fps, he invented fps multiplayer, he invented "deathmatch"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Romero
read well, Carmack did nothing but make a decent engine
by the way, find some interviews, John Romero left Id software because Carmack and the others were out drinking and mucking around, Romero pretty much made Quake all by himself, im not joking
