Oops, I forgot to add Ghosts of Tsushima. I expect Sucker Punch to go above and beyond on this one because people generally rate Infamous: Second lower than the first 2 games. I think they have something to prove and are going to knock it out of the park this time.
Doesn't really seem like a "masterpiece" kinda year, IMO. Some exciting games listed here, but we have no idea when half of them will come out. Cyberpunk? No way that's coming this year
For me, BOTW is the best game in a decade and it will likely take as long for another game to come out that beats it. There have been a few good games like Rimworld from non-AAA devs but nothing close to a masterpiece. Perhaps its just me getting old or just my high standards but I think its really far fetched to expect any game of this day and age to be a masterpiece since hardly anyone making games want to try anything new.
I'm hoping the upcoming star wars game will hit the mark, but tbh i don't really believe it. Ghost of Tsushima I think will be fantastic, but not sure it comes out this year. Open world is also a tough genre when you don't have the budget of R*. Spiderman did it good, but that's a character with naturally fun traversal. A samurai game with a much more serious tone is way harder to get right. Hope they don't overreach, but focus on a great campaign.
Other than that I don't know. Perhaps the new Ori game. First was amazing. If they can top that it's in masterpiece territory...
@pelvist: AAA gaming sure is boring today. We are very lucky to still have Nintendo around, still innovating. I just wish we had more AAA devs with the same mindset, but we can at least rely on indie studios for similar gaming goodness.

Come on, people. Gears 5? It's just another Gears. Last of Us 2? The next big Sony movie game? Ghost of Tsushima, from the makers of Infamous? New Star Wars game from EA / Titanfall devs? Masterpieces? What the actual ****.
AAA gaming have fallen hard and fast, and so has our standards apparently.
