What are some of the best rivalries in gaming?

I would say Gears and Uncharted are one of them. Uncharted was Sony's answer to Gears, and it did not disappoint. Instead of focusing on slow, horizontal gameplay, Naughty Dog went with fast paced and verticality. Uncharted also had great writing and characters, with Nathan Drake and Sully being one of the best duos in gaming history. Uncharted also had some pretty epic blockbuster type moments. While I've come to appreciate the Gears franchise (Gears 5 is fantastic, and if I recall, Gears 1 and 2 were great), I think Uncharted won this rivalry in the end.

Uncharted was Sony's answer to Gears? I'd say they failed miserably in that regard. Not that Uncharted isn't good (at least 2 is pretty great), simply that it would absolutely not convince me that I'm not missing out on Gears. They're so different I find the comparisons odd.

Was Uncharted really created in response to Gears? Seems like a weird "rivalry" but sure, Uncharted wins that one all day.

I might be aging myself but I miss ESPN 2K NFL games. This is also when Madden was actually a quality game. I liked the 2K series more but it was nice to actually see competition that offered different things for different people.

Fun fact: Madden still lacks halftime shows. Pathetic.

But Nintendo has killed all its rivals.

Every single game Nintendo makes has no competition anymore.

I definitely remember the part of them revamping the gameplay because of Gears. Didn't know the game was created as a response to Gears though.

Whatever the case from a single-player perspective, Uncharted takes it for me. Gears completely went off the rails after 3 whereas Uncharted remained pretty consistent (though I'd say 1 is worse than any Gears game). Each entry also feels fresher whereas gears 4-5 felt kinda samey and hilariously enough, Uncharted's gameplay evolved more than Gears.

I enjoyed the MP in Gears 1-2 a lot more though. Haven't really bothered with 4-5.

Gears of War to Uncharted? Whaaaaat?! Uncharted is an action-adventure and Gears is all about war and not to mention, the characters don't even jump. Nothing similar nor rivalry in what's so ever. That said, it was always Tomb Raider vs Uncharted.

Best rivalries was always Mario vs Sonic for a very long time so I'll go with that.

It's a stretch to say that the whole IP came about because of Gears, but Gears had a huge influence on it is what I mean.

I remember a time when Splinter Cell and Metal Gear were sort-of "rivals", but that's about it.

And I guess the classic Mario vs Sonic.

FF7 vs OoT days was really great. FF7 always dominates public poll in the early 2000.

Gears was the evolution of Killswitch game (not the band lol) it was going for that style of the time but I personally never saw it as a rival for Uncharted. Even as an Uncharted fan, I always saw it as Tomb Raider's rival.

Back in the day when both games came out for the first time they were compared very heavily.

@SolidGame_basic: I know we're talking about gaming rivalries, but I like to say both Xbox Gold vs PS+ is a good rivalry here. Sony introduce PS+ with its free games sub and MS laugh at the idea until they started free games with Gold and even MS was shockingly surprised it gave them much higher subs and wasn't planning to giving games for free until they change their minds. PS+ vs Gold saw some really good rivalry.

Personally Gears was more compared to RE4 gameplaywise back then. But both came out around when PS vs Xbox fanwar became really toxic and Uncharted got paired with Gears more because Killzone v Halo or GT v Forza.

That counts! PS+ came out of nowhere, never thought it would be as successful at it is today. Was cool when it was optional back in the PS3 days. It was worth it back then even as optional service.

Between gaming mascots: Mario vs. Sonic. No one more than 13 years ago would have thought that both iconic mascots would appear in both the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games and Super Smash Bros. series.

Between home consoles: SNES vs. Sega Genesis (known outside of North America as the Sega Megadrive, but since the Megadrive trademark is owned by a company other than Sega in the United States, the Genesis name was used)

Between online storefronts: Apple Store vs. Epic Store. Subject of an ongoing legal battle.

Tomb Raider and Uncharted, pretty much the same games with different characters. I like them both.

Nah. The recent paradigm shift view due to FF brand tanking and the game aged much poorly than OoT. Back in FF glory days the game common to compete in finals of many reader poll on any site.

However, if you want to date yourself the SEGA v Nintendo era was a great rivalry. Genesis does what Nintendon't.

Uncharted 3 seemed like a cash grab sequel if one could exist for games. I'd say even thre second one devolved into me murdering thousands of natives before suddenly having to kill made up alien Aztec creatures before the final boss. UC3 was so blah that I still have UC4 sitting in the que, can't bring myself to start it.

Gears one was just 80's action movie stupide which was great for the first one.
