Never played it. What other horror-themed visual novels would you compare it to? Is it anything like Higurashi or Corpse Party?

I dont know the first one and the 2nd one I havent played through, so I dunno tbh. Its kind of hard to give a comparison to another visual novel just cause its so weird. It plays it really straight for a the first half of the game as a dating sim, its very cliche and uses tropes. Then it just spirals out of control

It's actually not that unusual for visual novels to pull the wool over your eyes, starting out like a light-hearted dating sim before shit hits the fan and it starts becoming dark and twisted. That's what happened with Grisaia and Muv-Luv, for example. And these visual novels (and their sequels) went on to have some of the best storytelling ever written for an interactive medium. To an extent, a similar tonal shift happens with Clannad (my pick for the best storytelling ever written for an interactive medium), where it starts out sort-of like some high-school dating sim, before the tone and mood changes significantly (not in a dark/twisted sense, but more in an emotional and heart-wrenching sense).

Ya, Im sure there are ones that have similar ideas, its worth a shot though. Its free and takes about 3hrs, if you are into that kind of thing theres not much to lose

Manga, anime and even interactive novels like Corpse Party or Higurashi no Naku Koro ni have been doing this gimmicky style of subversion for a while though, right? Lots of manga have clichéd token character personalities with this cutesy art direction that typically instills the idea that it's a relaxed, charming anime but then subvert that with horror. The difference here is that Salvato's game seems to go for a different kind of horror. It's usually graphical horror that games like this go for. They have cutely drawn characters that are killed in extremely gory ways. Even the Battle Royale manga did this with some of its characters.

Personally while Junji Ito's manga aren't scary, I love his artwork in that the character designs themselves are unsettling and imperfect rather than shooting for the subversion technique.

I generally don't like gore in movies or cartoons so I'm glad that Salvato's game is doing a different kind of horror for his subversive horror game, and it's free too.

If it's short, then sure, I wouldn't mind trying it some day.

If you go onto blender and make a 3d static asset background, then texture or paint, then go over to manga dx and draw one side of a character ( even if your bad at drawing)in mirror mode, simply adjust the lines then paint it, then go open up a game engine load all those assets into respective positions, then create a class with four entities (and type gibberish like I am now) then add a switch statement for variety.

Then slap your name on it and sell it.

Call it lame ass game 2.

(Lol weirdo weeaboo trash, lol just reading the comments above)

Weeaboo is a mostly derogatory slang term for a Western person who is obsessed with Japanese culture, especially anime, often regarding it as superior to all other cultures.

@aigis: Done playing Doki Doki. Doki Doki blew me away all my expectations of what a visual novel could be. The psychological trickery was very enjoyable. Funnily enough, some of the effects in it reminded me of an old Gamecube game called Eternal Darkness. Both games are great at making you question whether or not you're seeing things. It's a really good twist on dating sims. It really opens your eyes to what it means to be real and not real.

@davillain-: Ya its really neat a lot of the meta kind of things it does with the visual novel kind of systems like not letting you save and when you spent the weekend killed me. I always heard eternal darkness was kind of like that, but I never got a chance to play it myself. Glad you liked it though, probably the biggest surprise of the year, I wonder what they are going to do next year
