@Jag85: I dunno. You are shooting bubbles a lot and can't move on to the next screen till you killed all enemies. Shoot'em'up maybe? Anyway, let us say it is a platformer, and it is my favorite game of all time.
This is the first time I've seen Bubble Bobble get called a shoot 'em up.
Going to list only one Super Mario. Also, i'm going to avoid games like Hallow Knight or Ori because i don't think they are platformers in the strict sense and i think they fit more into the "Metroidvania" criteria which is kind of its own thing now.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 - I mean you could put other games like World or SMB3 but IMO Galaxy 2 is truly one of the greatests games ever made and arguably the best platformer ever.
Donkey Kong Country 2 - I know the first one is also a classic, but this one for me was better in almost every way, love the game, the levels, the secrets, the music ... this is such an amazing and sometimes, underrated game.
Rayman Legends - Punishing, fun, lots of charm and a bit maddening ... but extremely well made.
Shovel Knight - Retro gaming at its finest, very hard to describe how fun this game is if you only see videos about it ... is just old school gaming with a modern approach and just the right challenge.
Super Castlevania IV - Man... this game was just something else, it has aged like a fine wine and is IMO the best Castlevania ever made.
Honorable mentions to Megaman X, Cuphead and Super Meat Boy.
Gunna say Super Mario Maker 1 then 2, then SMB 3 and SMW tied, and round it out with Donkey Kong Country. I love a lot of platformers, but these stood out first to me.
Kinda interesting how broad the perception of "platformer" is. I tend to feel once the gameplay is more combat or other adventuring elements than actual platform navigation it is some other genre with "platformer elements"
