If I'm getting this correctly, might be ingenious, specially for handhelds, if..

1 Set of Shoulder Buttons

-L1/R1 function = click(s)

-L2/R2 analogue function = scroll/rotate (maybe it snaps back into place when released?)

Its a pretty innovative feature, would love to see how they plan on implementing it into gameplay, my body is ready.

My Saitek x52 HOTAS (hands on stick and throttle), a joystick + throttle, has one of those on the throttle. It was actually quite useful as a button and a scroll wheel at the same time. I think it's a good way of expanding the flexibility of a controller.

I think it could be very interesting. I'll wait until I see more to pass judgement though.

I hope we can augment current traditional controllers with a tongue controller inside our mouths. Press tongue up, neutral, left, right. xD

Seems like Nintendo is more interested in making sure people can't pirate their games on PC in 10 years than making these changes for the sake of making gaming better.

Maybe if it's just some sort of analogue L2/R2 implementation for handhelds then that might be the case.

Wouldn't PC have methods of working around that via custom programs at the most extreme?

Unless this is meant to interface with their upcoming NX PC platform. (Keep the dream alive.)

I love the idea! I'm surprised no one has thought of this sooner.

its one of the things i would add to a wiimote 2.0. the most basic application of course would be weapon selection in a FPS. scroll to switch weapons. click to shoot.

i would probably have two of them to be honest: 1 on the nunchuck and one on the wiimote.

even in a traditional controller it would still be useful.

the trick would be to ensure that the click and scroll resistance is just right so that the player clicks when they want to and the scroll when they want to. also free scrolling is unacceptable for gaming. scroll in notches....has to be that way.

So the shoulder buttons function similar to a mouse scroll wheel?

@Wasdie: Does the "throttle stick" spring back or spring back to neutral when not pressed?

@topic:

This'll probably be very practical for most games even like BloodBorne/Souls/Shooters/RPGS.. instead of removing your thumb from the stick(s) and going for the dpad, no need to claw as well, just slide with your index fingers to choose items/spells/weapons/etc.

Damn. Now I want NX to have more powerful than the PS4/X1 and get their own non E for E game that takes advantage of the new L1/R1 sliders/wheels.

Idea sounds like another horrible gimmick. No thank you.

I will stick to normal controllers.

@j2zon2591: so since Nintendo has more or less lost the interest of the dominant console gamers ,are they trying to now tap into the PC market for next gen?

I don't like that there are less buttons. Its not going to be as good when playing fighting games. I like the mouse/scroll wheels that are also shoulder buttons idea and everything else. I think it could be very comfortable as long as it clicks when scrolling the wheels. That way you won't accidentally scroll the wheels. It took me a while to think about this.

Another patent

http://gonintendo.com/stories/242918-another-nintendo-patent-points-to-input-device-with-haptic-feedba

Another one has surfaced and seems to indicate a controller that offers haptic feedback via a touch screen. The device has two sections that provide the haptic feedback. There's also an image from the patent that gives the example of using a volume slider on a touch screen. The haptic feedback would provide the sensation of 'clicking' the volume slider into place with each movement.

Don't worry, you'll like it once Sony adapts it on their next-gen system.

I don't think they can because they are patented. Its to stop people from copying them. That's what the patents are for.

It seems like a cool feature that could be utilized by a lot of games. I'm surprised it's not something that exists, actually.

That hasn't stopped anyone from implementing the feature; they simply use a different design to get the same result. See: D-Pads, Analog Sticks, Start/Select, the four face buttons, Move motion control, touch pads, etc.
