Personally, I believe it's developers focusing on being general and "accessible" as possible to get the most sales. They are going for the cawwadooty teenager/young adult audience when the age of the average gamer is 37 and they have been playing video games for 12 years.

Also, day one DLC and pre-order which allows developers to drum up sales without people even playing the game. So they can make a crappy product and still make money because so many people pre-ordered.

Don't speak for all console gamers; I love my consoles and wouldn't prefer playing games any other way. That answer doesn't make sense anyway, consoles bring in a tremendous amount of money for the gaming industry.

High developer budgets that are only going to increase, which results in developers being forced to be accessible to everyone, and gives publishers like Activision more leeway.

Console gaming is shrinking actually and it has been for two years. The problem is that its the people that keep on buying the same things over and over telling game companies its ok to rehash IO's. Its what gamers want so they keep on producing games that dont push or evolve

Nothing is killing the industry currently it is simply that the times are changing, the undustry is adapting to keep up with what people want. Compare last gen to this gen and we have seen a rise in online gaming markets and an influx of indie titles showcased through these platforms be it Steam or XBLA. What is so bad about gaming being accessible to a larger audience, you have to consider more people are playing games now than people ever have, on many different platforms from PCs to IPhones. If the industry was to neglect these things then it would truely be dying. I just find it funny people complain about a lack of inovation like every single game should re invent the wheel, people need to get over the fact that gaming isn't this elite members only club.

I think people need to remember that gaming is nothing more then entertainment and as long asgamers are entertained and the developers and publishers make some money everyone is happy.

All these comments from people claiming that games are getting dumber or games trying to appeal to abroader audience is a bad thing is silly. People make it seem like there was a magic system or magic gen. in the past that had nothing but games that were art and never had to deal with movie based games, shovelware, cash ins or just poorly made games. There was no such time. Since the beginning of gaming developers have made games that would entertain you enough to keep youpumping in the quarters. They have also taken advantage or marketers and made games based on franchises to sell two items in one move. And of course there have been games that are made by developers who love gaming and want to make something beautiful or amazing. But people need to realize that even within these great devs the games vary.

You have devs that make a beautiful minimilistic game like SOTC and ICO. Or you can have a dev make an action oriented game with little to no plot but is a lot of fun to play like Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden. One dev doesn't love gaming more then the other, they are just entertained by gaming differently just like everyone else.

Gaming is alive and well making plenty of money and selling plenty of merchandise aside from games now. I just finished seeing Drake beat up some pirates while selling me a sub for Subway. There is no death or dying only publishers complaining about not having enough money which is something they will do no matter how much they earn.

Consoles usually slow down towards the end of their life cycle, cause they are working on next gen. Other than that consoles/games have never see higher sales than this gen so far. A lot of records have been broken.

Pc gaming is the one shrinking.

"And now, if you read our forums, people are saying: 'Why do you hate the PC? You're a console-only company.' And guess what? It's because the money's on console."

Although i agree with all the points you made, IMO Its the constant blueprinted crap the keep chugging out to the point where creativity everything ends up being ether the same or greatly similar. Rarely does something come out that is new and fresh, and when it does those end up being the "great" games. But, creativity is a risk in this business, and this business, like many others, want to minimize the risk at the expense of creativity. This is a necessity to an extent, but i just feel that the industry at its present state has gone too long far with the same formulistic games, and that creativity is necessary at this point.

Wait a minute, since when has the industry been dying?

Pretty sure the industry is healthy atm. But if it is not without problems. Two of them being recession and ever increasing development costs. While I am not so happy about many modern mainstream games, the industry is in no shape or form dying.

I disagree, I think with the addition of XBLA and PSN, indie and more creative games have been given a mass media audience that they never would have. Yes there is always risk involved but let's be real, creative out of the box games have and will always be rare. That is why they are OUT OF THE BOX type developers. New formulas are not easy to come by and at the end of the day we all just want to be entertained. I can easily enjoy GOW a very typical but enjoyable hack and slash just as much as ICO/Heavy Rain/other unique game. It's all about what I am in the mood for.

I don't think the industry is dying, but I do think that the asinine moves publishers are making to drain more money out of their customers while at the same time catering to an increasingly self entitled core customer base that doesn't feel like they should have to pay for anything but at the same time wanting large budget AAA games to entertain them could definitely kill it.

Everything sucks, All developers are overrated and every game is a rehash. It's effing depressing. If a game doesn't play like a broken 15 year old PC game it's dumbed down.

Jesus.

Lets see... Last gen:

150 million PS2s + 25 million XBOX's + 20 million Gamecubes..

195 million consoles sold in that generation

PS3 = ~ 55 million
Xbox 360 = ~ 55 million

Wii = ~ 85 million?

Already today the 3 consoles have sold 195 million, and this generation is far from over.

Each of them will most likely sell 5+ million before the gen ends.. so I can easily see this generation finishing off with 210-230million consoles sold.

5th generation:

130 million PSones

35 million N64s

~ 10 million saturns?

= 175 million

4th:

50 million SNES

~40 million Genesis

rest sold like nothing

so under 100 million.

This was my answer, but I guess I'm too late. People that think something is killing the games industry are killing the games industry.

Yes because team bondi and many other dev studos are not closing:roll: This industry is very destructive because there is no space for lower budget games beause companies are fighing for first place. Casual gamers just want high budget games that are dumbed down and hold your hand the entire time ("cinematic"), without realizing that not all devs can compite on the same equall field. Just look at the japanese industry; they have just a select few dev teams that can produce games for hd consoles, the rest moved to handheld gaming.

Everything get impacted from originality to heck the ability to make a game at all. So people that say there's nothing wrong with this industry are the ones that are dillusional. Ironic because people here always act like bussiness experts lol.
