What do you think is the most influential game series this gen? I think its pretty close between call of duty and gears of war. Gears of war influenced games in their cover systems and horde modes.Like uncharteds cover and halo's firefight mode. First person shooters try to take elements from call of duty to make their game better. Like armor abilities in halo reach and the xp level systems in newer games. Cant think of any other game series that I see other games get an influence from.

Call of Duty, everyone wants to jump the Generic Millitary FPS Bandwagon now. Can't blame 'em, it's the money maker of this gen.

Call of Duty. It started the trend of military corridor shooters with 5 hours campaigns. It also gave developers the idea to make it mandatory for kill streaks/perks to be in every multiplayer shooter.

Who's "everyone"?

There was Homefront, and I guess the new Ghost Recon games take a lot from CoD, but what else? And don't say Battlefield since Battlefield has been here since before CoD.

CoD. The fact that you put Gears next to CoD is very questionable.

I would say Call of Duty, but with that said, both of these titles had games from last gen, that influenced them greatly, such as RE4 ushering in the over the shoulder shooting.

I don't buy that for a second. I am sure it influenced Uncharted a bit, but MGS4 not so much. RE4 influenced all of these titles more than GeOW did, no doubt.

Yeah, MGS4 would have happened anyway, but I'd wager that Uncharted would have been a different game had it not been for Gears.

Well, even as a rfan of both Gears and CoD, I feel you should have titled this thread, "Which of these series do you think has been more influential". Because you only listed two series and imo neither is the MOST influential this gen.

However between the two I would say Gears was more influential. Coming within the first year of this gen the cover system has made a bigger impact than even CoD's aim-down-scope mechanic. However by the next gen I think the ADS from CoD will be more prevelant. But as it stands I think Gears has had the bigger impact when speaking purely from a gamerplay standpoint.

Call of Duty! Terrible series, I don't see why anybody buy these games anymore. But since they are so popular every single developer tries to copy them and utterly fail! Why can't they realize that the people who want games like Call of Duty buy Call of Duty and that the the people who want different games buy different games.

Everyone seems to have forgotten the most obvious answer:

Wii Sports

Both COD and GOW combined don't come anywhere near the kind of influence that Wii Sports has had on the gaming industry as a whole for these past five years.

But between COD and GOW, I'd choose GOW as the more influential, simply because the over-the-shoulder cover system that it popularized has been more influential than any possible mechanic COD may have popularized. Selling more copies does not make COD more influential.

I would say there are quite a few influential series/games besides these. From the top of mu head - Angry Birds (or some other smartphone game before that which influence smartphone game and even other apps), HappyFarm/Farmville/civtyville/? (which influenced facebook games), MCF Series (which influenced so many HoG)

I would argue that both Angry Birds and Xville (farmville ect) are more influential than any of those... despite being complete rip offs of previous games. Farmville made Facebook gaming as big as it is these days, and was a big part in making social gaming one of the most popular genres today. Angry Birds was a big part for iphone gaming.

Even if Gears of War wasnt created, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune would still have been created. Both Drake's Fortune and GeoW1 was heavily inspired by the first whac-a-mole, Killswitch.

Gears of War popularized the whac-a-mole.

As for being innovative, neither was particulary innovative. Gears of War's horde mode has been done before and done better in Unreal Tournament's 2k4's invasion mode, the first game I played which had an invasion mode was Alien vs Predator's skirmish mode in 1999.

In that case, the credit should go to Happy Farm, the first farming social network game. It was (and still is) hugely popular in China, and inspired most of the other farming social network games in other countries, like Farm Town and FarmVille. With that said though, Happy Farm itself was heavily influenced by the long-running Harvest Moon series (which has been around since the SNES era), though Happy Farm deserves credit for bringing that style of gaming to social networks and paving the way for social network games in general.

TC, you are aware that BF2 and 2142 both had the XP and unlock system set up way before CoD4 right? Killstreaks was the only thing CoD did (as far as I know). Anyway I feel Gears was more influential due to the 3rd person cover mechanic that spawned in games that were made after it.

Lol @ the poll.

Call of Duty is the same kind of game as Fifa or NHL - comes out every year and barely changes. It doesnt influence anything, because it doesnt do anything new. Its just milking the shooter genre.

Gears of War is quite influential for TPS genre, thats for sure. But I wouldnt call it one of the most influential games this gen.

I think its between Demons Souls (even The Witcher devs admitted they were highly influenced by it when developing The Witcher 2), Mass Effect (epic storytelling is one of the defining aspects of this gen) and Uncharted (which simply is the highest rated and most treasured new franchise of this generation).

CoD, because of it every company wants a piece of the generic military shooter pie. EA/DICE is the worst offender. Even though BF fanboys will never admit it and blindly praise them.

FarmVille certainly contributed to bringing up the numbers much higher, but that doesn't make it the most influential. It is simply the Happy Farm clone with the most users.

Perks? Killstreaks? Loadouts? I don't remember these before CoD. They certaintly weren't anywhere near as popular. CoD is by far the most influential game this generation, though that isn't a good thing. As for Demon's Souls being the most influential.. Witcher 2 is only one game & the influence wasn't as blatent as Homefront, Halo Reach, Medal of Honor etc.

As for Uncharted.. What has it influenced? It just copied a bunch of genres. And it isn't the highest rated new franchise if you include the first. Gears of War is rated higher as a franchise (there may be others also), & most treasured is subjective, & doubt it's the most treasured to the majority.

As said, a game does not need to be innovative to be influential. Heck most of the most influential games of all time were not innovative at all. Take Half Life for instance.

Really? What influence has Wii Sports made? And to quote you "selling copies does not make it more influential". COD is definitely more influential than GeoW. GeoW did the cover mechanic well and paved the way for TPS games but COD4 intergrated into their multiplayer killstreaks, perks, a levelling system and they topped it all off with fast-paced multiplayer gameplay. Sure the formula hasn't changed much since COD4 but you can't deny that it still works for so many people and that so many other FPS games are trying to pull off something similar.

Everyone seems to have forgotten the most obvious answer:

Wii sports paved the way for motion controls. And really gave them the push. Wii sports also inspired quite a few games. Not just on the wii, but also on the PS3 and 360.

Edit: I wouldnt say it is the most influential. But at the same time, I wouldnt say it has had no influence either.
