I can't think of any title from this gen that's been influential to this gen...

However, I do hear a lot of devs saying Legend of Zelda from the NES is always an inspiration :P

[QUOTE="Diviniuz"]and lol at gears being influentionalGenesis-X
Without Gears, you don't get Uncharted, MGS4, and other third person shooters. :|

And without Killswitch you wouldnt have gears and MGS4 has been long established before gears aswell so i dont see what your getting at with the MGS4 one cause MGS has had cover mechanics since 2 if im not mistaken.

Lol @ the poll.

Call of Duty is the same kind of game as Fifa or NHL - comes out every year and barely changes. It doesnt influence anything, because it doesnt do anything new. Its just milking the shooter genre.

BlbecekBobecek

Thing is over the past 5 years, year on year theres been immense improvement in Fifa cant wait to see their overhauled defensive AI aswell as bringing Ultimate team into EA sports games was one of the best moves ever if im being honest.

Fifa has changed a lot over the past few years and has improved a lot.Play fifa 07 and compare it to even 09 theres major improvements across the board then you compare to 11 and soon 12 and you wouldnt be saying that.Football's an ever evolving game aswell.

That's no joke. I never have been a fan of FIFA or soccer for that matter... But after playing FIFA 12 demo... starting to change my thoughts, definitely an improvement from what I've played in the past.

To be fair CoD4 did kinda singlehandely shape the way nearly all subsequent FPS's handles and feels (plus the multiplayer stucture has spread like a flu).

Like with COD, simply having the most sales or users does not equate to most influential. Happy Farm was already a huge social network phenomenon in China, where it had tens of millions of users, a year before FarmVille existed. And even in America, the Happy Farm clone "Farm Town" also had tens of millions of users before FarmVille appeared. FarmVille certainly contributed to bringing up the numbers much higher, but that doesn't make it the most influential. It is simply the Happy Farm clone with the most users.

Maroxad

But it did the most to make social gaming the phenomenon it is today. Right?

As said, a game does not need to be innovative to be influential. Heck most of the most influential games of all time were not innovative at all. Take Half Life for instance.

I wasn't talking solely about originality (since Happy Farm was itself heavily inspired by the Harvest Moon series, adapted for a social networking environment), but more about how many other works were inspired by it. My point is that even before FarmVille, social network games were already a phenomenon in Asia due to Happy Farm (where it inspired many clones, had a reverse influence on the Harvest Moon series, and where FarmVille is still largely unknown) and was also already starting to become a phenomenon in the West due to its clone Farm Town.

Everyone seems to have forgotten the most obvious answer:

Wii Sports

Both COD and GOW combined don't come anywhere near the kind of influence that Wii Sports has had on the gaming industry as a whole for these past five years.

But between COD and GOW, I'd choose GOW as the more influential, simply because the over-the-shoulder cover system that it popularized has been more influential than any possible mechanic COD may have popularized. Selling more copies does not make COD more influential.

exiledsnake

Really? What influence has Wii Sports made? And to quote you "selling copies does not make it more influential".

COD is definitely more influential than GeoW. GeoW did the cover mechanic well and paved the way for TPS games but COD4 intergrated into their multiplayer killstreaks, perks, a levelling system and they topped it all off with fast-paced multiplayer gameplay. Sure the formula hasn't changed much since COD4 but you can't deny that it still works for so many people and that so many other FPS games are trying to pull off something similar.

Of course I'm not talking about sales. Instead, ask yourself this: how many games did Wii Sports inspire, and in comparison, how many games did COD and GOW inspire? It should be pretty obvious that the amount of games that Wii Sports inspired (literally in the hundreds) completely dwarfs both COD and GOW combined (at most, maybe a dozon each).

As for GOW and COD, GOW was the one that popularized a whole new sub-genre of games, the cover-based third-person shooter. COD did maybe popularize one or two mechanics, but you should keep in mind that first-person shooters were already hugely popular long before COD came along (Halo anyone?). In contrast, third-person shooters were not that popular before GOW came along, but ever since then, TPS games have been giving the traditionally more dominant FPS genre a run for its money. That alone makes GOW more influential than COD in my eyes.

Actually Wii Sports is definitely the right answer, I truly forgot all about that game. I'd say the Wii games really paved way for more casual titles. I mean I still think Call of Duty is a huge influential game based off how many games contain perks in their Multiplayer(Even games that aren't FPS)

Call of Duty.

Gears of War to a lesser extent, what with the popularization of the cover system introduced with Kill Switch / MGS.

[QUOTE="Darth-Samus"]and imo neither is the MOST influential this gen.Cherokee_Jack
What is?

Man, you know? i really just don't think I have an answer to that that I'd feel comfortable with. A few highly influential titles do come to mind. As I stated Gears is certainly up there. Uncharted for for its seemless blend of cinema and gaming. Mass Effect for its engrossing story and how it connects players to the characters. Twilight Princess for being the first big-impact title to use motion control (and do it well).

But again it's sort of a double edged sword. You could Say KOTOR came before Mass Effect. Or Metal Gear Solid came before Uncharted. Not to mention titles like God of Wars 1 and 2, Resident Evil 4, Grand Theft Auto and a slew of other titles that were last gen games that probably had the biggest impact on steering the direction of this current gen. So, like I said I don't know lol. Lots to choose from the way I see it.

Call of Duty 4 alone, is more influential than other entire series put together this generation (for instance, CoD4 was way more revolutionary than the entire AC franchise).

Call of Duty is the same kind of game as Fifa or NHL - comes out every year and barely changes. It doesnt influence anything, because it doesnt do anything new. Its just milking the shooter genre.

Gears of War is quite influential for TPS genre, thats for sure. But I wouldnt call it one of the most influential games this gen.

I think its between Demons Souls (even The Witcher devs admitted they were highly influenced by it when developing The Witcher 2), Mass Effect (epic storytelling is one of the defining aspects of this gen) and Uncharted (which simply is the highest rated and most treasured new franchise of this generation).

Twin-Blade

It's Gears.... Horde mode? Taking Cover "stop n pop" gameplay? I dont see anyone emulating CoD, tbh.... of course there are other military shooters... but there always have been. And the only game I've seen that really has tried to emulate CoD this gen is Homefront.moistsandwich

As for Uncharted.. What has it influenced? It just copied a bunch of genres. And it isn't the highest rated new franchise if you include the first. Gears of War is rated higher as a franchise (there may be others also), & most treasured is subjective, & doubt it's the most treasured to the majority.

Really, what games have created a genre or have been truly innovative in recent years? And even though Gears took TPS to the mainstream it essentially copy and pasted Killswitch' s mechanics. The three things you could argue that Uncharted 2 set the precedent in was polish, execution, and integration. Uncharted 2 is one of the highest rated games ever, it has popularized cinematic gameplay like Gears popularized TPS, and its inspired other developers. Considering that Naughty Dog(for Uncharted 2)was voted in by its peers for a ton of awards and won a majority of them. Awards that were decided by the votes of other developers and Naughty Dog for Uncharted 2 nearly swept all the categories. Uncharted 2 is one of few games that recieved massive critical acclaim and awards from not only other developers(as well as the press) but from the fans alike, as Uncharted 2 won a metric ton of fan voted awards also. If a game like that isn't influential then what is? Uncharted 2 has to have the record for most awards won by any video game in history. If game quality were inductive of game sales then Uncharted 2 would've sold like 50 million copies. I mean Uncharted 2 might not have been the most innovative game ever, and introducing new geners and such , but its the closest thing to a perfect game as you'll get. The level of polish and the level of execution and presentation present in Uncharted 2 is unmatched in the industry and a lot of developers can look up to that and strive to make better games

What do you think is the most influential game series this gen? I think its pretty close between call of duty and gears of war. Gears of war influenced games in their cover systems and horde modes.Like uncharteds cover and halo's firefight mode. First person shooters try to take elements from call of duty to make their game better. Like armor abilities in halo reach and the xp level systems in newer games. Cant think of any other game series that I see other games get an influence from.

slipknot0129
Nope cover system already existed long time ago like with WinBack
