After two gens in a row being exactly 1 gen behind its competition, i think they finally learned their lesson and release something powerful. At this point they'll have to release a console significantly more powerful than a ps4/x1 or they will not be noticed. Probably something like 8 cores at 3.0ghz and a 960 OC equivalent. I just hope they don't mess up on the cpu like the other two did
Not one but 3 gen behind, N64, GC and Wii were behind their competition, I do have to say that they are awesome for Nintendo games but suck at everything else ( befor Ninty rabid fanboys pounce on me I have to mention that I do own GBA, DS, DSi XL, 3DS XL, GC and Wii and do like Nintendo games ).
The N64 was the most advanced console in gen 5 save for its usage of cartridges. The GameCube was also the most powerful 6th gen console save for the Xbox.
Wouldn't it be more accurate to say cost of cartridges? I say this because it all comes down to memory and such. Carts offer a potential benefit of having chips on carts which aid the console side of things.
Even with its shortcomings the N64 still output the best visuals that generation.
***Genesis and SNES were very close. I wouldn't call the SNES significantly more powerful. Oddly, the best of the snes easily eclipses the genesis.
********I'd even go as far as saying that the Gamecube may have very well output the best visuals of that gen. I know SPlinter Cell Chaos Theory looks great. I know Ninja Gaiden looks pretty good. However, there are a few games on the Gamecube that are just stunning and tend to hold some graphical sheen that seems to be absent on xbox. Rogue Leader(or is it rebel strike) runs in a higher resolution, has a large polygon count, and has super smooth gameplay.

A console should be a custom built box.
