We are now roughly almost five years into this generation, and all of the console have pretty much established themselve, and created a niche...they all have their games out as well to, so id just like to kno what everyone's thoughts are on the gen so far...how does it stack up to other gens, and overal if you are satisfied with it.

From a purely gaming standpoint, I feel like I own arguably the best video game console to date. Definitely better than last generation, arguably better than N64. My 2 pence

I think I'm satisfied with it, it's been quite interesting and no doubt fun, but I've found that I've finished far fewer games this gen than in previous gens... I seem to lose interest quickly this gen, for some reason.

There certainly havn't been as many games as last gen but there have certainly been some great games. The Wii established itself as a paper weight while the 360 and PS3 are still fighting. As for PC, one couldn't really apply a gen to it but I guess it's still going well.

A ton of good games, with very little time to honestly finish them all. A lack of originality from the mainstream devs though, but it's been made up for by the XBLA/PSN/downloadable/indie gaming crowd.

I feel that it definitely has the most "quality" of any generation even if the passion level seems somewhat lower than some of the other gens.

It's now becoming a great gen so far, but I'm not sure if it'll touch the 16 bit era.

its been OK i somewhat switched to PCWii from 360Wii because the 360 broke for the 3rd time now and i dont have a penny to my name so i cant buy a new one right now, so its been up and down XBL is awesome but the hardware running it was made with glue and sticks which might be compliment if they let MacGyver make it but sadly no. On the bright side im loving PC gaming downside is none of my XBL friends can run any of the games i can and they cant really use a mouse and keyboard for games so ya i only play with strangers witch is lame. so overall pretty good gen

Where's all the JRPG like we had last gen on the PS2? Too much shooters. This gen is probably lame, if were not for strange games we have on the Wii.

I have a lot of mixed feelings for this gen.

A lot of games are trying to be blockbuster hits. This could mean a decline in quality of the game (that doesn't mean it will always happen in every case). There is also way too much hype for a lot of games; not from System Wars specifically, but rather from Microsoft and Sony as well as the developers themselves. Most extremely hyped up games tend to not be the godsend people said it would be. I'm left in disappointment. The last thing is while I don't mind guns, there are too many guns. I know it is because of the cash crop that is the FPS genre, but it becomes too shallow. It is not as deep as it should be as of now. There are gems no doubt, but there are so little. I really don't have much other complaints that aren't considered trivial.

This gen is okay. It keeps me busy. I have games to play on my PC and consoles, as well as my handhelds. It's not as special as it was last gen.

This generation has been good, and from a technical standpoint the best. However, I just don't feel that "magic" this generation that I did with last generation. There was something special with the PS2, Gamecube, and to a lesser extent the Xbox. Playing Halo CE or Pikmin just felt different then playing today's games. I can't really explain it, but I hope somebody feels the same as I do.

Xbox and Wii are some of my most favorite multiplayer systems ever. N64 and the original Xbox were the other two greats in this department.

ANd the DS is phenomenal not to mention PC.

I like this gen so far, but I'm super excited to see what the 3DS turns out to be. I'm dreaming of a handheld that actually fulfills nearly all gaming roles to where I'll just need a 3DS and my PC, and I'm set.

As for now I have to mooch off my friends systems because they do offer some great experiences that can't really be done on the PC or handhelds, or rather won't ever be done. Games like Super Smash Bros, and such.

One of the best.

A few sequels are missing, but then again we have loads of new great titles.

Bad thing about this gen is hardware reliability.

Terrible.

There has been no game that is truly remarkable and original, I'm talking about the type of game that sets new standards. It just might be the type of gen. which foretold a darker gaming future...

It's hard to compare. While I've always had a console in the house (Atari, NES, SNES, N64, PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, PS3), I don't think I've played anywhere near as many games on all those systems combined as I have on PS3. So this gen is the best for me, though my favorite game is still OoT, but not by nearly as much of a margin as it used to be.

I love it. People are overly nostalgic to the point that they don't even realize how much evolution we have seen in gaming (I'm sure someone will cite 2 or 3 games from the entire last gen that were longer and had a better story, complain about SP campaign length, blah blah, but there is certainly constant evolution in VGs.) There might be too much focus on online for some, but I am just as happy online as offline, depending on the game, so I am cool with it. I literally have far too many games to play, I have a huge oppressive backlog that stretches almost 2 years back. I don't understand how anyone could need more games to come out. I think a lot of SW denizens are overly critical and too hard to please.

Hahah, the comments in this thread totally prove me right. "Nothing good this gen" "it's all shooters" "last gen was better". Next gen you'll be nostalgically reminiscing over the Halo 3 campaign and COD4 and complaining about how this new gen is all gimmicky with its focus on stupid motion controls. "Last gen was 10000x better! The gen before that was even better! Atari games are the best games ever made! Sign me up for some street cred!" Anyone who hasn't supported any of the more obscure or risky titles has no right to complain about the lack of variety this gen. It all comes down to sales, if you want your favorite genre to keep pumping games out, BUY THEM.

its been a bit of an oddball. nintendo becoming the market leader in the console market. the PSP lasting longer than 30 seconds in the handheld market. no one saw that coming (well ok everyone wrote off the DS at launch claiming that ninty were making the N64 mistakes all over again..but they were still wrong). i think this is going to remembered as a pivotal gen...a gen where everything changed. business models are going to change, the perception of a gen is going to change, connectivity and online networks are going to become a bigger deal (with DD not necessarily taking over...but becoming more prevelant in the future). i think 3rd parties know that they have the real power in this industry now and are going to start dictating terms to the manufacturers rather than the other way around. in the future and i also think there going to have a bigger say in the design of future consoles from all manufacturers in the future. multiplat is definately going to become the norm also....the days of 3rd party exclusives is quickly coming to an end. we also have apple coming in now with their app store and such like which i think is going to further affect the way the industry does business in the future. how...im not so sure but i certainly think nintendo especially are keeping a close eye on them. as for the games...its been business as usual. many brilliant games that will be well remembered, lots of ambitous games that didnt really deliver on the epic vision (hi spore) and lots of cookie cutter me to nonsense. and of course the shovelware. not a wii exclusive thing....shovelware has been abundant every gen...publishers just looking to make a quick buck. i dont think this gen has had its GTA3, metroid prime or OOT moment yet (its had its halo in the form of gears) bu thats not to say it wont happen.

This gen has been nothing short of magical for me. A lot of my dreams have literally come true.

When I was young, I imagined a game that combined light-gun shooting control with a free-moving perspective. That has happened.

Motion controlled swordfighting. Done and done.

Head tracking for camera control. Done.

Comprehensive team-based soccer game. Done.

Choose-your-own adventure cinematic game. Done.

Another great superhero game. Done.

Cinema-quality acting and writing in games. Done.

Detailed maps for flight sims. Done.

Level ups for competitive FPS play. Done.

Very large, realistic open world game. Done.

Intense 2D brawler that looks like a moving painting? Check.

Believably detailed cartoon-style games. Done, done, and done.

Download services for consoles! Oh yeah, baby.

Shooter gaming heaven. Yup.

Cheap electronic drums. Sweet.

The last generation was great in iterative fashion - better platformers, better space sims, better shooters, and so on, but this generation just made me go "Wow." I'm glad I lived long enough to game in this gaming environment.

Heh. You should try gaming more on the Wii. I guarantee you won't find developers pushing the processing power on that one.

Well, there have been many games with both terrible and great reviews that I have enjoyed immensely. From this perspective, I guess it is about like any other gen. However, I do find that gaming is indeed better than it ever has been in terms of what is possible today. That is something that I think we all can appreciate.

On the downside, there also seems to be an increase of flash over substance as well. Don't get me wrong, I love playing in HD and I appreciate when a game has gorgeous visuals as much as anyone. I just see that many devs and gamers alike seem to be losing sight of the core of a game itself in favor of making a game as flashy as possible. Face it, this 'GrApHiCs KiNg' nonsense is worse than it ever has been as well, taking the focus off of the the game itself entirely.

You can make a game ultra-polished, loaded with dazzling special effects and gorgeous visuals and man that sure is great on the surface. However, if the game itself beneath all that jazz is lacking, then what do you have? A beautiful, but empty to half full shell, that's what. I'll take substance, character, challenge and charm over shallow, mega budget flash any day.

Make no mistake, I love my fair share of the mega budget hype train games and there are many more I am anticipating. I just mean that there seems to be a shift to flash over substance in general. Add in the growing trend of a DLC driven market and this gen is indeed a double edged sword of sorts. I am indeed enjoying the advancement in what is possible, though. No doubt about that.

If you only game on HD consoles, it certainly would appear that way. There aren't that many games, and the variety isn't large enough to mask the feeling that for every Heavy Rain, there's a bunch of Ratchets and Clanks. Taken holistically, however, this is not true of this gen. More than ever, there have been games that focus on gameplay and game design over graphical prowess. I'm talking, of course, of the Wii scene, and the indie scene on PSN, XBL, and PC. World of Goo looks great, and sounds great, but you can't deny that much of the effort in that game went into game design. Plants Vs. Zombies, same. If you focus your view only on the things games media direct you to, then you will get taken down the tourist path. That's to be expected. If you want to get to the really good stuff, you gotta be willing to explore a bit off the beaten path.

It's still okay from a PC gamer's point of view. My favorite genre is flight/combat sims. Such games typically have very long lives. I've had three since 2007: Flight Simulator X, X-Plane 9, DCS: Black Shark. It'd be four if I count IL-2/Pacific Fighters*. The only one I'm waiting for right now is Storms of War: Battle of Britain which is supposed to be the successor to the IL-2 series (first came out in November 2001).

* I also had Lock On: Modern Air Combat and Falcon 4: Allied Force. I'm not sure where the discs went though.

Last generation was 1000x better.

da_illest101

and the one before the last gen was 100000x better. I can't think of 5 games this gen that impressed the hell out of me

haha ha, you got a point.

but last year and this year look to be makingup for alot of ground in that department. We need more unconventional, let it all hang loose, forget what caters to the casuals type of games like Demon's Souls for this gen to stand a chance. Also Unchated 2 last year was excellent and Alan Wake looks fantastic this year. also Halo Reach looks to regain the formor glory of a title that's truly capable of recapturing what made Halo CE so great.

Flash over subtance? So this gen is pretty much like every other gen in gaming then. I remember when the biggest deal was how close an SNES game was to it's arcade counterpart. You know, graphics always were important to devs and gamers.
