Does it have to have amazing scores? A lot of hype? Do you just buy anything you want because you're loaded? Or do just like to support your favorite devs? Or the total opposite - you just don't buy full price at all? For me, it takes quite a bit for me to spend the full price at launch. Scores are important, so is my experience playing the game either through demos or betas, and so is watching videos on youtube. But most importantly, if it's a developer or series I really care about and I really think I'll like it, I really don't mind supporting them at all. Best example for me is MGS series. Bought 1,2, and 4 at launch (don't remember if I did for 3). What about you, SW? What does it take for you to buy a brand new game at launch?

It has been so long since I bought a game at 60 dollars. Destiny might be the first one in a long long time.

It has to meet one of following criteria:

1. A new console just launched and I need to buy a game to play on my new console.

2. It has a great competitive online multiplayer component and if I wait for a price drop, other people will have already played it so much that I won't stand a chance at being competitive by the time I finally get it.

3. The game is made by Nintendo and unlike other companies, it takes Nintendo many years (if ever) before they drop the price of their games, so I might as well just buy it day 1 because the price is still going to be exactly the same 3 years from now.

I support the devs and series that I enjoy. For games like The Order or Destiny that I have preordered though, I have to do quite a bit of research on what they are about. I'll read up on nearly every detail released on the game up until about six months out. That way I don't have anything spoiled if the game has impressed me enough to make a purchase. The Order looks like it's going to be a great TPS with an intriguing story and great time frame. Then for Destiny, I'm buying it mostly for the coop. A bunch of friends want to play it and it looked decent enough, so I preordered it.

If i see something i like, i buy it, scores for me play a bigger role for games that i don't pick up at release

Since I joined best buy gamer unlock which gets me 20% off every game and being the person I am that sells a game right away once I am done. I lose very little money on a brand new game

I am not willing to pay full price, so I guess release it at $20 for console and $5 for PC.

Usually, a clean backlog. I have about 100 games to finish atm. Hype will still make me buy a game at launch. Also, we buy games for our oldest son as soon as they launch...

last one i bought at full price....killzone shadow fall. regretted it hard. I usually wait to get it used on amazon or something.

It probably has to be from a company like Naughty dog or bungie which i know just crap quality.

It has to be a game I'm interested in and it has to be well reviewed...and I have to own the system that it is released for.

1. A MGS game

2. A Mikami game

3. A Bungie game (though this has backfired in the past)

Besides that, really any game that I know I can put a lot of time into. Wasteland 2 and Beyond Earth look like they'll be easy day one purchases for me.

It takes a lot. It doesn't really matter the price at launch because I know if I just wait a couple months whatever the price was will be reduced significantly. If a game is $60 I'll wait until it hits <$30; however, if a game were to release for $30 I would still wait a couple months to save money on it. A couple months is for a highly highly anticipated game too, like Dark Souls; a lot of times it'll be a year or two before I hit the button and by that time it can be <$15.

1. If it's something my friends and i decide to play

2. The sequel to an extremely good game (DA 2 made me rethink this one)

3. If it's a game made by a group of developers i trust (as arkham knight, mgs 5 and bloodborne)

Hype, which usually means it's a sequel to a game/series i really like, a genre i really like, or by a developer that i really like. Currently I'm hyped for Master Chief Collection and Smash Bros Wii U

Has to be a trusted developer like Bungie, Turn 10 or Rockstar for me to pre-order, but I will pay full price after it is released of it is well reviewed and is a genre I like.

I have been burned in the past buying games alone due to hype (i.e. CGI's, selective gameplay videos, gaming media / fanboy promotion) therefore I rarely buy games at launch anymore. My day one purchases are now restricted to games produced by Blizzard, Nintendo and Valve.

My desire to have the game. Pre-order bonuses, price, and future availability also play a role, but ultimately it comes down to how badly I want the game.

  • If it's in a genre I like and from a dev I trust.
  • If it's a sequel (or spiritual successor made by the same dev) to a game I loved and doesn't look like they butchered it.
  • If it gets 9's and 10's from a bunch of reviewers and isn't in a genre I hate.

If it doesn't fit any of those requirements, I'm probably waiting until it's $20

After having spent $37.77 USD on 13 games for this year's Steam Summer Sale, there is little that could convince me these days to spend anything remotely approaching $60 for a single video game ever again. I'm even reluctant to buy a Wii U now knowing that the games will be $50-60.

any game with a premise, setting or style I might like.

Most all cyberpunk for example are bought outright, due to it being my favorite setting.

Most RPG-FPS hybrid are also an instant buy.

And ofcourse Devs I have had enough games from to know the feel of the game, and how it is built up will likely be.

Ironically it rarely backfires, but then Again I look at games through my own eyes, and don't care alot about scores (unless there are 100+ of shockingly low ones that might dissway me from buying it), and I have no interrest in hype what so ever.

To me the game itself, the craftmanship in it, and what they try to accomplish is the most important Things, and if I like what I see beforehand, I will buy it.

But I also prefer to know a decent aobut about the game. Holding the Cards so close to the chest that potential buyers can not know what the game is, looks, or feels is a dick move, and trying to cover up such information with Hype is pretty damn low.

Multiplayer games are really the only games to me worth buying at launch its where the community and activity are the strongest and you are on a level playing field with everyone else in terms of level and gear. Although I don't buy EA mp games at launch anymore.

  1. I already had it on my "must buy list".. Something I just want.
  2. I have confidence in the dev team that created it.
  3. In (or around) a consoles launch window.
  4. I've played and enjoyed the demo.

I almost never buy new games since we have too many sales over in PC-land, but ill rarely buy a game on launch if it satisfies two criteria: A) I've been excited and waiting for it so long I need to have it right away B) It's going to offer lots of re-playability.

Liking the damn thing, seriously games nowdays are the same russians ak47s, cinematic hollywood linear story, they just dont have the variety in topics and ideas they got in the past. If they got an idea i like, ill buy it, until then i am bombarded with cod, assasin creed and other overquelized franchises.

@system-reboot: Its amazing how a small game managed to be more complex and fun than the AAA overdone franchises outhere.

Making games at the pat was about making a good game with the least money as possible, now its spending as much money as possible on a generic game and hoping that will result into making it a good game.. and by good game i mean "sales" because thats what matters now not scores, SALES!!!

because it was made for PC first than will later port on console.

most of AAA games are made for console in mind and will turn out just generic overdone millitary shooter so of course they are nothing less than mediocre.

now let see if Doom 4 will be PC first...

To answer the question it's pretty much just enormous amount of hype. It's a bit sad tbh, I feel ashamed lol. Last two games I bought at launch were GTA V and Bioshock Infinite.

  1. A heap of rave reviews that are sincere (believe me you can tell). So not the Titanfall reviews for instance.
  2. Better yet, a heap of rave user reviews.
They can be all over the place but put them together and they are more informative and more accurate than any critic review 100% of the time, simply because they don't ignore the things that critics don't get to see/don't care for and a thousand people find problems that five people don't.
  3. A very well established series so you know what you will get.

  4. A Valve/CD Projekt RED/NIntendo game.

In those cases I don't care much for the price because they are must have titles. Due to sales I get 80% of those at discounts still. And that is good, otherwise I would not be able to buy so many games by a long shot.

Quality. Nintendo consistently puts out product well worth the dollar. Very few other companies do this. I still go back and play Nintendo games dating back to the nes. Maybe older capcom games were worth full price, but things have changed with them over the years.

I'd say I'd have 3 primary reasons

-If I love the work of the developers (Rocksteady and Retro Studios are at the forefront here)

-If I love the series the game is a part of

-If I do a lot of research and it's the kind of game I've been wanting somebody to make for a while (most recently that was Assassin's Creed IV with its pirate simulation slant)

Needs to be a sequel to a franchise I adore or at the very least an extremely interesting new IP from a developer that I adore. And even so I won't bother saving up for a pre order or anything. If I can't afford to buy it at launch or before launch, then I just won't.

I don't, the last game I paid full price for probably was MGS4.
