[QUOTE="JohnF111"][QUOTE="KC_Hokie"]Sony claims to be sitting on $12 billion in cash which makes zero sense too. How can you lose billions for three of the last six years and sit on that much cash.

KC_Hokie

Well they had 14+bill the year before, they had to repair a massive network hack and bunch of other things, now they have 12bill. Seems fair i guess. Apple supposedly has 50bill in cash doing nothing so can't be that difficult for Sony to have 12bill.

I just question what 'cash and cash equivalent' means. It's self-reported and could mean something like short term stocks (their own). If they really had that much cash sitting around they wouldn't hesitate to outspend their rivals in console development.

The Cell CPU for example cost Sony an estimated $400 million. Sony has stated they won't spend that kind of money on the PS4. I bet they would spend it again if they actually had $12 billion in cash or cash assets.

Yeah i know it's really confusing there's like a hundred types of assets and 100 types of income in Accounting so i'm just leaving it up to them. Yeah Sony put a lot in the PS3 but now the tech is settled and matured and most importantly profitable i guess they won't spend half what they did next time.

[QUOTE="Cow4ever"] It doesn't look like the lost that much money these 3 years. But don't ask me I just started 1 week ago with microeconomics. Cow4ever

It was a big deal last April when Sony actually made money for a quarter. [http://www.fiercewireless.com/story/sony-ericsson-posts-first-profit-2008/2010-04-16]

Their net income for year ending 2011 was down $3 billion.

If I am not mistaken this is only about Sony Ericsson. And Ericsson has always been in trouble, Sony pretty much saved them.

Here is every year since 2006 in terms of profit [http://www.stock-analysis-on.net/NYSE/Company/Sony-Corp/Ratios/Profitability]

Look under Ratios then Net profit margin. They haven't made money for an entire year since fiscal year 2008 (or 2007).

The worst thing is i own a SE Vivaz, good enough phone i don't know why they aren't profiting, maybe Sony selling them for $200 when they cost $300 to make?

Sony isn't run by very good people. I honestly would stay away from their stock. For every good division there are like two that lose money.

I just figured out how Sony is able to sit on $12 billion in cash. They have $43 billion in debt.

These financial sheets are very deceptive. They don't want you to see debt next to revenue next to profit next to assets. They all contradict for Sony.

Pretty much what some are saying:

NEVER NEVER EVER launch a system with such an exorbant price tag.

Other than that, Sony should just KEEP DOING what they've always done:

  1. Maintain Good relations with 3rd party publishers.
  2. Maintain exclusive 1st party games
  3. Cater to the core (and casual) gamers
  4. continue the PLAYSTATION brand name

M8ingSeezun

i agree with all of that exept the part with the core gamers, since those ar all on pc.

Sony needs to do ABSOLUTLY nothing...

There is no need to play the first place/second place/third place game...Just continue to make awesome consoles and amazing exclusives and I'm one happy gamer. Why do I care if they sell more consoles than another company? Last I checked I dont see a cut of that money.

Sony is a business....
