I'm making a completely random and uninformed guess.

Perhaps fighting games largely appeal to the Japanese crowd, and the declining state of Japanese gamers has resulted in a decline of fighting games. This has been the first generation, i think, where there have been several action and FPS games from Japanese developers catering to the western market much more than their own market.

Think about it, platforming used to be huge. Now GS doesn't even have enough of them to make a whole list for platformer of the year.

Smash bros. happened, its simply the best fighting franchise, everyone is waiting for SSBB, thats why.

When brawl comes out the fighting genre will be fully revived.

There were never that many fighting games to begin with and there has not been a new IP in many years. I do remember a time when they were extrememly popular but has since been neglected due to the popularity of shooters. Street Fighter is probably still the most popular fighting game to date.

We should be expecting Mortal Kombat 8 for Ps3/360/ and maybe Wii for this November. And look you got smash bros coming out in Feb. maybe they're not as big as they used to be in the SNES days, but they're still there.Sants412
