While we may not know much, I think we can make some assumptions based off of market trends.

What excites me:

Aside from new graphics, I am excited to see what devs will come up with. Hopefully next gen just won't be a bunch of FPS games. I am looking forward to new ideas and what they can accomplish with next gen. Like bigger worlds, more realistic characters etc....I also think games will continue to get more into main stream like it is now, which means games will be seen as the art form that they are.

What scares me:

I am worried that devs and publishers will find ways to screw consumers over. Things like XBL and online passes are already stupid, but what about next gen? What's to stop them from doing it again? I am personally worried that if MS is the first one to the market again, they will do this and will set the standard for Sony to follow in line with it.

I am also personally worried about the next Xbox because if they don't get better exclusives and change some policies, I won't be interested in it and honestly I doubt very many would be either. I doubt Halo will be very popular next gen, it's like Golden Eye and MK, they were popular in their day but soon people passed them. The next Xbox needs more. PS4 and Wii U will not have this problem.

Excited about: "new" tech and since it's a new console cycle publishers will try to make new franchises. Scared about: games having an option to pay to win/ level up and dashboard/XMB/loading screen advertisements.

Nothing and nothing.

If devs would put graphics in the back seat and concentrate more on game design while gearing that extra hardware power towards physics, AI and scale I would be excited!

But thats what I expected this gen and... well, we all know how that turned out. We need new and better experiences, not a shiny new coat on an old clunker.

I don't blame the devs though, its the gamers that are never satisfied with the graphics for more than 5 minutes.

All the things that could scare me about the industry already happened this gen. I could go into a long winded explanation, but to make it short. As a whole, we have proven that we are idiots as consumers.

Excites: graphics, less lag, developers learning from their mistakes in multiplayer games this gen sence this was the first major muliplayer gen (on counsoles), more enemies on screen, new tech that wasn't previously possible, bigger maps, hopefully a continued revival of the fighting game genre.

Scares: I'm scared that the trend of CoD clones will get worse.

I'm afraid Nintendo's system will do poorly.

I'm afraid that the Smartphone market may have taken a bigger bite out of the current gaming market than we can currently see.

I'm afraid that Sony hasn't learned it's lessons from the PS3 (PSVita was not a strong indicator that it has)

I'm afrain budgets will get so big that games become unprofitable except for the biggest franchises, making new IPs difficult or impossible.

I'm afraid there won't be many new IPs with costs so high.

Why are you so pessemistic?

COD will always have a fan base, but over gens things change, I don't expect it to be popular forever. Same goes for Halo, look at Golden Eye or MK, they were both big dogs back in their day, but later on people lost interest. They still have fanbases like Halo and COD always will, but eventually people will move on to other games.

Next gen will bring more games. New titles. I expet consumers to be wiser next gen and compaines won't be able to get away with what they do now. For instance I bet MS will have a harder time getting people to pay for XBL next gen, since PSN is basically the same thing now.

Golden Eye never had proper sequals unlike CoD.

and MK failed keep it's level of quality up and failed to adapt to 3D

CoD doesn't really have either problem, and BO is gonna be the best selling CoD yet. I think until somebody produces a major hit that is both wildly innovative and sells like 15 to 20 million copes, we're gonna have to cope with CoD domination for a while.

Like i said. i dont give a crap about next generation. i play Next generation every day on PC. when Metro Last Light will release next year ealry. it will looks better than any game that next gen console will offer. and next gen console will release on late 2013 or early 2014.

Well I hate to break it to you, but your actually not playing next gen, your just playing current gen with some graphic mods or games that actually are not that much better in graphics than consoles, particularly the PS3.

Metro looks great, but go see MGS GZ, it looks better than Metro and that game is for consoles. Go look at upcoming games like TLOU or GOWA, rivals many PC games. PC gaming does not have as big of an edge as Hermits claim.

There are only a few graphic mods that make a real difference like GTA4 frostbite mod or whatever it's called, but very few people have PC's that can run that. Very few would spend the money and time to be able to do that.

So it's all pointless. You might be surprised next gen, your PC is not as impressive as you like to believe.

Jokes aside, I do believe it comes down to a presentation issue for most of these guys.

Lets get hypothetical with Mario Galaxy for minute. Brilliantly designed game! Tons of content. Lots of variation. Expertly crafted level design (arguably some of the best around) and pitch perfect platforming mechanics. But of course it gets hate and people call it kiddy because of the light hearted visuals... ok.

Lets replace Mario with some bad ass looking ninja. Instead of a stomping enemies animation, replace it with this ninja coming straight down with his sword impaling the enemies only to bounce off with geysers of blood reaching into the skies. Instead of the regular series of tripple jumps, replace the animations with crazy flips, teleport animations and other sorts of over the top craziness. Replace the typical Mario enemies with demons and ninjas and other imposing creatures. Make all the environmental assets dark, dreary and dreadful. You get the idea.

I really believe the same idiots that discredit those amazing games for being "kiddy" would be among the first to jump on board and praise the sh!t out of this hypothetical game. Even if it played exactly the same from start to finish.

What scares me:

  • Digital distribution on consoles. I like the idea of having a physical copy of a game.
  • DLCs. I am sick of DLCs from this gen already!! Can't we go back to the PS2 era where this DLC bullsht didnt exist?

A true SMB4 (not the Mario in a can NSMB stuff) could be amazing. If they gave the 2d titles just a portion of the love that went into the Galaxy games it would be great!

I think they're already pretty good, but I agree they could be alot better.

Or at least lenghthier, those games can be beaten so fast and there's not much replayability.

Yeah, they are good. The level design and platforming mechanics are both spot on, which is all a platformer needs, but they just feel so damn uninspired! I wouldnt mind a bit of risk, or even a change of pace like Yoshis Island.

And yeah, a longer game would be nice. I think that would also make room for higher difficulty through adding a few extra worlds.

What excites me is the possibility of the Japanese getting involved again. Most of my favorite games ever are developed by the japanese, and my two favorite genres are JRPGs and 3D platformers, neither of which westerners have ever really shown much interest in. So I really hope they get back to making more console games that are actually good.

The reason why I think they will be able to get involved again is that Nintendo and Sony have the option of restarting everything from square one. They really screwed up last gen and just made it so that it would be foolish for them to decide to develop for their consoles over their handhelds, because it was more profitible and easier to do. However the reason for that was because back when the wii and ps3 came out, the ps3 was super expensive, hard to develop for and no one bought it. If you think back to the first two years of the ps3, it was slim pickings but there were some really great games. However almost all of those didn't interest the japanese in any way whatso ever. So it was even worse for them than it was for us. And then the wii, was just too underpowered, the japanese wanted to do something new, and while the tech was worse on handhelds, because it was handheld, and portability and playing together on your own device captivated their interest more than motion control. And the 360 was the 360. so there was no viable console for the japanese to fall back on and invest in. Both were just very problematic and had too many issues for them to really want to deal with.

Hopefully, I am thinking it will be different this gen. either the WiiU or the next system sony makes will be a hit with the japanese audience and the developers in the east will decide to invest in it again.
