Pick one:

Deus Ex
Planescape Torment
Xenogears
The Longest Journey
Syberia
Sanitarium
Clive Barker's Undying
Max Payne 1
Grim Fandango
Monkey Island
Metal Gear Solid 1
Vampire The Masquarade: Bloodlines
Arcanum
Fallout 1
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Knights of the Old Republic 1
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
Persona 2: Innocent Sin
Gothic 2: Gold Edition
System Shock 2
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
Wizardry 8
Ultima 7 (both parts)
Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Fallout: New Vegas
Betrayal at Krondor
Suikoden III
Chrono Trigger
Breath of Fire II

I have dozens more examples that have impressed me, but i can't remember all of them at the moment.

Lucianu

Thread's done folks, pretty much all of those are arguable. At least all of the ones on that list that I've played. It's missing Silent Hill 2 maybe, but he even mentioned there were more.

Planescape: torment should be considered cheating, it's like bringing crysis into a "best graphics" thread. Assassins creed and deus ex...if you know your history and symbolism, unfortunately most people don't. I'm surprised these games haven't been censored into oblivion.

Pokemon. It has by far the best story told in history. Nothing compares to it.

but yeah, NIER has an amazing soundtrack, story, and the gameplay is pretty good.

More people need to buy this game!

Actually, the story wasn't half bad, especially considering that it came from a crappy generic FPS. I truthfuly enjoyed it's story. Granted, the whole "numbers" thing got incredibly repetitious and annoying later on.

I thought the characters were great, with the exception of Emil. Good god his stupid voice was so grating I wanted to strangle him! The dialogue between the father, Kaine, and Weiss was ****ing priceless though.

Probably some of the funniest dialogue I have heard in a video game in a long time.

Emil was the whole reason I disagreed. I mean... he's just terrible. like I wanted to throw my TV out the window bad. :P

Kaine was good, the main character was decent, the rest were also decent. No one beats Weiss though :P

Nah, how about a reboot with updated graphics, same music, slightly altered voice acting (mainly for Emil), and a totally revamped sidequest system. Holy s***, greatest game ever? It could have teh potential :o

Eh, I'm not sure how they could possibly continue on with the story in a sequel. I mean it ended perfectly, and had actual closure. Either way, it's almost impossible considering it's developer Cavia got absorbed into a bigger company and the game bombed critically.

Yeah it'll never happen. If only SE poured as much money into NIER as they did with FF XIII, It would have been a masterpiece.

Oh well video games are pretty generally riddled with pretty terrible stories by traditional standards, but there's a good bucket full of greater examples.

That being said the game centric 'narratives', and even some other more traditional ones are pretty remarkable, even if they're not strong on paper.

That being said I'd say MGS3, Fallout, Majoras Mask, Planescape Torment, Shadow of the Colossus, World of Goo, Grim Fandango, Deus Ex, and so on.

Less traditional wise Defcon and X-Com come to mind, pretty sure you could bundle quite a few other games alongside them.
