In my opinion, the best are:

Braid and Mirror's Edge deserve mentions.
XenonRadon
these. i'll just add Limbo and the forementioned Machinarium.
Indie games usually do visually cool stuff. big AAA titles obviously look good, but not usually because of the visual style, but because of the technical detail.
These are some massive games there with big production values and plenty of polish but which has the best visual design out of these?
for me Uncharted 2 still has it but all of them look fantastic
(was close to putting Metal Gear Solid 4 in there but didnt quite make it for me)

The first thing you should've done is build a consensus on what the parameters of visual design should be and then list the games that qualify.
[QUOTE="gillri"]This is so lol worthy it's fantastic.yeah still not seeing it, why are you posting pics of it?
my PC can run it on full but its a tech demo for the 2nd time, so resolution and FPS counters (you know who you are) would lap it up
but people with real artistic integrity the games in the poll have better visual design and crysis wouldnt even be mentioned
DragonfireXZ95
I agree, obvious fanboy is obvious.
And to all the people that whine about the onslought of Crysis screenshots in threads like these, you can blame people like gillri for that.
I don't know about best, but Stalker deserves a mention. Even if there are games out there that look better technically, Stalker is a game where I can just look at something and think 'wow' every single time I play the game. I just love the depressing urban Soviet vibe.
I think that this award should go to Donkey Kong Country Returns, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Muramasa. These games look alot better than most HD games and they are running on very weak hardware. That's a true testament to visual DESIGNPikminmaniac

I'll give you Mirror's Edge and Prince of Persia, but I have to say that Batman Arkham Asylum is extremely art-lite. I absolutely love Arkham Asylum and not just because I own several Batman graphic novels, but it really wasn't something I would love to just sit and look at as I would Super Mario Galaxy 2. I found the Starship Mario to be one of the most artisticaly beautiful things in mainstream gaming.
the game as a whole is so astheticly pleasing. how is that art-lite? The ownly reason this looks so good is because of the use of colour and the visual stile
Voted Gow3 for its visual design. Though Crysis has better technical graphics and the game with the highest production values would definitely be Metal Gear Solid 4These are some massive games there with big production values and plenty of polish but which has the best visual design out of these?

mass effect 2 (i get a real blade runner feel from cities like illium and omega, which is definitely a good thing)
prince of persia (2008 i love the artstyle)
uncharted 2 (not a huge fan of the game but it sure is beautiful)
bioshock (rapture is one of a kind)
red dead redemption (one of the most beautiful and immersive gaming worlds i've ever experienced)
valkyria chronicles (best looking anime style game this gen imo)
littlebigplanet (there's so many different things you can do artistically with LBP, i've seen some amazing user made levels in this game)
From that list, for me personally, Red Dead Redemption. Greatest looking game I've seen on a console this gen so far. I also really like Motorstorm Pacific Rift.
Darksiders,
No really, the concept art is among the best this gen (ever IMO.) Played it on my PC and my jaw dropped. The amount of detail into the game made me go "DAAAAAYM!" On PC this game is a visual beast. Everyone said it was a poor port because of a lack of settings, ect but I disagree. Sure theres nothing to change but the game looks FAR better than its console counterparts.
Artisically of course I think its the best. There are many others who deserve recognition like SMG, Sonic Colors, KEY, Amnesia, Arcania Gothic 4, Metro 2033, RAGE, Mirror's Edge, The Witcher 2 Banjo-Kazooie Nuts and Bolts, Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo, and many more. However Darksiders was the game that really made me appreciate art and all the details developers put into the game.
And did the TC really say Uncharted 2 is like a PIXAR movie and its the closest we've ever come to it? No really, I've never heard such a biased opinion ever from these forums. Its one thing to be biased but another to be biased, blind, and completely wrong. Uncharted 2 is good but not that good. Relies too much on "pop" IMO. Technically though Crysis and Metro 2033 put everything to shame. Thats not debatable. We're talking about art though. There can never be, and will never be, a best. Its all opinion.

Yeah its f'ing great so far. Rented it when it first came out on PS3 but man it was so blurry and kinda dull. PC fixes everything :P I can't wait for the second one also since its supposed to include someone else besides War I read which will be interesting. Hopefully they do the PC version "right" and release it same day as consoles. No reason not to since the engine and studio now has PC experience.
Darksiders really doesn't get enough attention for anything it does right. All the attention went to that ugly bimbo Bayonetta and her *****y game which I personally think is one of the worst games I've ever played.
Based on that list I think Mass Effect has the best art design, they have designed a complete new universe from scratch and carved a mythology into it. The other titles bar Dead Space have a basis to start from. I also think the Viva Pinata game has a fantastic art style and some of the pinata are well thought out and drawn.
