What happened to Rage?

A lot of people were hyped about this game, and when it came out I didn't really heare much about it. Now Yahoo has it up on their biggest flops of the year list right next to the likes of Duke Nukem and DA2. Its not THAT bad is it? All I thought was wrong with it was that it had a weak story, but thats a pretty prevalent thing in gaming nowadays.

Rage is a great, old-school FPS with some fun racing parts but it's marred by technical issues (mostly the PC release). It's actually one of the better games id made and most people hating on it are PC fans who dislike it because it's aimed towards consoles.

It isn't that bad. The problem is it is average in every way aside from the visuals. We expect more from ID.

I'm getting it once my semester is over.

That, Skyward Sword and Dark Souls are the big three for me this year once I take my finals.

I wouldn't really compare it to Fallout because it's not an RPG. It has an interesting world.

Looks like a demo is in the works for the PC. However it will be "something different"...whatever that means.

Oh, ok. It's not really an open world game, nor is it similar to Fallout 3. The world is really small and limited.

Think of it like a FPS, with small driving sections in between. And light RPG elemets (looting,trading, upgrading your car)

Shooting is top notch. Visuals are great, driving is OK?, I guess. It's also a short game. I would say it's worth a try.

None of the mentioned "high-profile" competitiors were as fun as Rage was.

It allways looked boring to me. I don't like to rage when I'm playing video games haha.

When the hype behind your game is "ID software classic developers!" and then you go ahead and develop the game for an audience that couldn't care less about you, the game will flop.

It was okay. What happened was a lot of hype because it was made by Id, even though they aren't exactly pumping out great games anymore.

I think the problem is that it took Id a while to make it, and its a bit dated in many design aspects. The graphics and AI are among the best this generation, and if you told me it was an Xbox 720 launch title, I would believe you. Unfortunately, it feels so bland and boring and the big world feels wasted with so little to do.

It was a good game, but people expect great things from Id I think, and the time its been in development probably made some people initially excited about it forget.

I think its a fun game. It just got buried by a bunch of other titles.

Rage was pretty bad. Everything about the game was dissapointing, and its sad that they worked on the game so long. Its pretty clear they had no idea what kind of game they wanted to make.

Rage was supposed to be this incredibly showcase of the new Id engine.

It was supposed to wow, impress, and deliver something new.

It did NONE of those things.

Why? Because Carmack decided to focus on consoles as the lead paltform. Carmack himself would later say that that was a big mistake.

No $#!^ sherlock.

So they built their brand new engine on 6 year old, stagnant technology, and the end result was, predicatably, unimpressive.

No one was wowed. Heck, even other console games looked better, nevermind other PC games.

The game itself was also not what was promised (something harkening to the old FPS' of old with intricate level layouts was promised), instead we got the same old corridor shooter, hundreds of which already exist on the consoles.

Only 'fun' SP FPS this gen, maybe besides Hard Reset, however it's quite flawed. Story is meaningless, disjunct, episodic feeling, pacing feels off 'cause of the worthless story and driving which is stupid excessively arcadey garbage, can't drift, 1 gear, poor engine sounds. Flat baked lighting w/o any spec looks static...

But the shooting mechanics themselves are good and fun. :D

I really enjoyed Rage. I bought it day one with no regrets. It looks great, and plays great.

It's not completely open world, and it's not an RPG, and it's definitely not Fallout 3 with cars. I think this is what a lot of people were expecting. However if you go in expecting a really good FPS with some car racing that is exactly what you get.

Say what you want about the game it has the best sounding shotgun EVER.

The world and story was incredibly dull. Id never really attempted a story before. Sure, they stringed something of a story together with Doom 3 but most of it you could skip or ignore and continue walking down corridors shooting demons. In Rage though, you have to listen to characters give you quests, and all the characters are terrible and the world is uninteresting. Then, after you get this freaking quest you drive off somewhere to go shoot people without the game really giving you a reason. "So many of the Ark survivors ally with the Authority, but they're pure evil" well why are they evil? I'm an Ark survivor, would I want to form an alliance for them? Why mention these things when you're just going to have me shoot them in the face? I miss id's old story telling: there are demons, kill them. Or, aliens invaded, kill them. Or, you're in some evil medieval portal room thing that brings you to bizarre castles filled with monsters, kill them.

Terrible story aside, the shooter was pretty solid. The guns had a good kick to them, and enemy animations were amazing. Plus you got all the cool side gadgets and various ammunition types. It was a lot of fun when it was straight up action, but it focused too much on the dull story and uninteresting driving segments to make me want to return to the world.

I'm currently going through Bulletstorm. But, Rage will be the next FPS I buy.
