I beat Demons Souls, XCOM 1 & 2 (the second on iron man mode), and I got close to beating Divinity Originl Sin (need to get back to that). I'm also working on Cuphead. I'm sure there are others I just can't think of them at the moment. What about you, SW? What "hardcore" games have you beaten?

I thought that gamers can be "hardcore," not games themselves.

I play run 'n gunners and shmups, so a lot of those, and I generally play games on at least hard difficulty, so yeah. More recent stuff, I guess there's Nioh and beating Amon in Kiwami. I haven't played cuphead yet, but I doubt it's as hard as say something like Alien Soldier or Contra: Hard Corps. I'd like to give it a shot eventually though.

@SolidGame_basic:

Super Mario 2: The lost levels

F-zero (snes) on Master difficulty

Xcom: enemy unknown (Ironman)

Demon's Souls

Dark Souls 3

Pretty much it. Don't have the time these days to get that good at any one particular game anymore lol.

I really have no idea what games are regarded as "hardcore". I just play the games I enjoy, if it's too easy I'll put the difficulty up and if it's too hard I'll turn it down.

I don't classify games as such, so I've no idea. It's a fairly rare occasion I beat games nowadays anyway.

You want hardcore... you've got to go back to the NES.

I've beat Battletoads and could beat the first Ninja Turtles game in 30 minutes without losing a turtle.

When I think of hardcore games, I think of the NES.

I beat the original Castlevania with no cheats.

@i_p_daily: Think something insanely hard or difficulty like Battletoads for the nes or Demon Souls for a newer game. This isn't something that should be confusing so many people in this thread.

I’ve been gaming for a fairly long time so there’s been quite a few “hardcore” games that I’ve beaten over the years. The Ninja Gaiden games on the NES immediately spring to mind. Also Gradius and Life Force.

Well since the invention of save points and health that refills once you hide for a bit, you really couldn't say that any game from the last few gens would be hardcore.

But I knew what the OP was talking about I just wanted to see if someone could actually give a good explanation which you did :)

I started playing console games in 88 and know plenty of hardcore games, games with 3 lives and once you've lost them you have to start the whole game again, ah the good ol days. I couldn't even think of a game in the last 10yrs that was hardcore, but i'm sure someone will mention something.

Yeah, I don't really label games as "hardcore" or "casual." It's up to the gamer how much they want to put into a game.

That said, talking about difficult games, I did beat Cuphead a couple days ago.

If by "hardcore" you mean something that's really difficult, then not many... I'm not a fan of games that make you want to throw your controller out the window.

Maybe something like Ori... that can be challenging at times. Awesome game.

Pretty much all the Ninja Gaiden games and I beat DOA5's survival mode on the hardest difficulty without losing a single battle if that counts.

A few games I'd consider hard that I've beaten:

Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 3
Little Nemo: The Dream Master
Dark Souls 3 (probably the easiest in the list)
Super Meat Boy
Binding of Isaac
Rogue Legacy
Hotline Miami (and sequel)
Nex Machina
Contra 3 (Probotector in Europe)
Ikaruga
F-Zero GX
A couple of MegaMans
Gradius

  • Ninja Gaiden NES Took me 3 years of play to finish
  • Castlevania 1 & 2 NES Beat 2 solo with no hints or tips.
  • Conta NES no death run
  • Zelda NES no death run in 3 hours-way before speed running was a thing
  • Metal Gear NES Solo no help or tips
  • Ninja Gaiden Black
  • Dark Souls 1 & 2 solo no summoning

NES games were hard as nails back in the day. Most modern games are so dumbed down. I tried playing Batman Arkham City earlier today. The game was so easy and mindless to play. The game is cool to look at but it's stupid easy. I could probably beat it playing the controller with my feet. I need a challenge when I play a game.

I love pixel art and the way old games look. I play my older games on a hd tv with an expensive upscaler. Chrono Tigger ins't about hand eye coordination since it's turn based. A lot of older games are about repetition and take memorization and timing. If you miss something by one pixel you're starting over. I'm about 7 hours into Batman and there is no skill involved what so ever. It's a mindless button masher. Catwoman is probably the coolest thing in the game. I love her move set. Newer games are more about forcing a cheesy story down your throat then challenging a player. With the exception of Dark Souls. I've played every Dark Souls game and I couldn't tell you one thing about the story in any of them.

I got a few from a long time ago that were very hardcore: 8 Eyes form Nes in the late 80s, Tricky kick from 1990 turbo TGX 16, and Kenseiden from Sega master system in the late 80s, and Super Hydlide. These games were from hell. Sometimes when I think about them I get sad, cause games today are so much easier due to online guides/information. In the 80s you were on your own and no one could help you when you got stuck. People think games today are hard. Now that is funny. One more thing: %$@ Tricky kick! you kept me up forever trying to finish you!!!
