This is a tough question. Plasma is better for colour and contrast but can often suffer from burn-in if you play a lot of games. While some of the newest PLasmas have little ways to "fix" this problem, they may be out of your price range. I don't know.
LCDs are relatively cheap in that size, but I have a pretty good LCD and I find darker games can get hard to see without cranking up the brightness. LCDs can sometimes have issues with blacks unless you are buying the best of the best. ALso, LCDs can have blurring if there is lots of fast moving, so look for the lowest possible refresh rate to avoid this problem.
Frankly, I would try to find the TV with the best specs for the lowest price. Plasma or LCD both have advantages and disadvantages. ACtually, you may also be able to buy one of those HD projection TVs that are being phased out. They are big and clunky but cheap and yet still quite decent TVs.

these kind of answers are the reason you shouldnt ask questions like this on this forum.

Phillips plasmas don't suck they are actually a really good tv. Secondly I understand that Pioneer is up there as far as Plasmas go and they are also very very expensive, so if you want to make a suggestion to someone you also take price into consideration. Please don't tell me to read reviews honestly.

So much alliteration...

At that size you'll be looking at an LCD. Samsung is tops, IMHO. I'd consider bumping up your size range enough to get a decent 42" though. That seems to be a good sweet spot for size. I don't know how TV prices run in the UK, but I got an open box Panasonic42PZ700U for $1400 last year. Now it's retailing for about that much. It was about the best flat panel of any kind you could get in 2006, and it still ranks really high in terms of picture quality.

Am I nuts, or would it be EXTREMELY difficult to spend $1600 on a 37 inch TV? I bought a 50" 720P Plasma Pioneer almost a year ago for under $2000. Pretty much the best picture money could buy for under $4000 at the time.
I'm guessing 1080P TVs are more expensive, but one word of warning I will give is on a 37" TV 1080P will mean almost nothing over 720P unless you park your nose DIRECTLY in front of the TV. If you look at some AV forums you will find charts that show how close you would need to sit next to varying sized TVs before the average person could see a difference between 720P and 1080P.
I've been very happy with my 720P Plasma. I sit about 7-8 feet away.

Yeah, what he said. You probably can't get a Pioneer Kuro at that price (supposedly the best HDTV out there right now), but in terms of TVs mere mortals can afford, a Panasonic plasma is a great way to go, and you can get a 1080p TV if you go up to 42".

What are you talking about? Obviously by the looks of it you have no idea what you are trying to say.... :| Please go do your homework before you make a statement such as that.

Um not everybody can afford a Pioneer plasma, like I said in my post to the other individual is that when you make suggestions you also have to consider prices, which by the looks of you dont either. So if you can afford a $3000 dollar pioneer for gaming than go for it they are a very good tv from what I have read. But for the deal not comparison which I was not doing originally is that Phillips are a good plasma for the price you pay. I have seen the 360 on a 52 inch plasma and it has a very nice picture and you can get them for a pretty good price.
You can get a TV bigger than 37 inches for $1600.
How far do you plan on sitting from the TV? If you're more than 6+ feet, you could save money and get a 720p tv since you likely won't notice the difference in picture between that and 1080p from that distance.
