Think about it. It would be a gaming PC, a market that they are already in. Dont they own alienware? Anyway... they could make a PC gaming rig geared towards console gamers. PC gamers such as I always say how a PC can do anything and more than a console can do. So why doesn't Dell take advantage of this? What I mean is Dell should make a PC gaming rig that looks like a console. Have it in a small case. Affordable, maybe like $400 - $500. Comes with a control pad. Connections to hook it up to a TV and WALA you have yourself a console thats really a PC. Bottom line I am saying make it as EASY as possible for the console gamer to TRANSITION to PC gaming. IDK just a thought that came to me. Anyone think this is a good idea?

The only other thing is that PC wouldnt really have the ease of access to just "pop in a cd/blue ray" and start playing a game and not have to install, but sheesh with Steam now a days its easy as heck to install and start up a game on the PC. Even a console player would be able to learn it quick : p Thats another idea, have Steam partner with Dell and have Steam pre loaded on all the rigs. Basically this rig would aim competiton against current consoles. Try to transition console gamers into PC gamers. Would anyone be interested in this?

I think a lot of console gamers are leary of PC gaming, because of the complexity of it. When in actuality there is not much complexity to it at all. Dell could get rid of this perceived complexity and have everything ready to go in the box ready to hook up to your living room TV.

We'd likely see a system with a higher failure rate then the 360 and ps2 combined.

I can confirm this statement. My screen burned out and I called Dell about since it was under warranty...The guy tried to trick me into invalidating the warranty. As for this, nah. I doubt Dell could make a great PC for 400 to 500 dollars and I can already hook up a desktop to a TV anyway. I would still want a console because of the exclusives and these consoles are turning into mini PC's all the time. So I guess it is already happening.

This would not address any of the reasons why many people do not play games on PC. You underestimate people's lack of interest and apprehension of PC gaming. 1. Cost of entry is still higher than consoles for a dedicated device. 2. People are scared of hardware. They trust that hardware from the console manufacturers will work in a way that is familiar to them and they do not have to do anything other than plug it into a TV. They don't want to research PC hardware or build a PC. 3. Most people do not know how to troubleshoot on a PC. Although problems are significantly lower than in the past, you still need to know basic troubleshooting to play games on PC. 4. People are still highly ignorant of PC gaming. OEMs like Alienware have reinforced the stigma of expensive "gaming PCs." People don't know that you can use gamepads on PC. That you can connect them to TVs. That they offer a streamlined, simple experience. That the games are cheaper and have an amazing library. People see PC gaming next to console gaming and pick console gaming because it simply MAKES MORE SENSE to most people. This may not be based in reason but this is how it is. As long as it runs Windows it will never make sense to most people as a gaming device. Most people are aware of console and see them as the ultimate way to game. Simple as that.

I think AMD could make a "PC console" but then again there's not really a need for it.

Oh god no...that's a worse idea than Apple getting into the console business. Dell is barely keeping it's head above water as it is. It surely doesn't need to added expense of R&D on a console. The modern Dell is nothing like the Dell from 10 years ago, hell even 5 years ago, and this is coming from someone who worked there.

Dell (like HP) make most of their money, by far, in the office and home office market. The Alienware brand is only a tiny part of their market percentage. They're far more interested in selling 100+ PCs to an office with a 5 year warranty than producing gaming riggs for the enthusiast. At the moment it's all Sony and Microsoft with Nintendo in a casual 3rd place, who knows who'll be there in the future but I don't think it'll be Dell replacing any of those 3. I'd be more inclined to expect a large Korean or Chinese company making a play for the console market in coming years but it will take a hell of a lot of money and investment to get it away from the Japanese.

Replace your entire list with "1. Most console gamers just prefer console games over pc games." The assumption that people don't prefer pc gaming only because they are "highly ignorant of pc gaming" is highly ignorant.

With Dell I'd expect an Onlive type service with a microconsole type of situation. It would be a dumb little box for streaming games, and that's about it. Wouldn't be worth much though.

Really? I thought they were pretty good. Answer my tickets super quick and just yesterday I sent them a sad note saying that all my friends have Dead Space 2 and I want to play with them. Guess what they did? They gave me a copy of Dead Space 2 for FREE!!

If it weren't for the fact they have zero development experience (which was the only thing that saved the Xbox brand), it actually isn't that crazy an idea. The big issue facing PC manufacturers is the profit margins are absolutely terrible, to the point that the market leader (HP) is actively trying to get out of the business.

That's why you get ****ty customer service and $100+ for 2GB of RAM type upgrades -- they literally can't afford good customer service, and those upgrades are the only way to build in a decent profit-per-sale. If you look at the enterprise/workstation side of things (where the margins are better) Dell, HP and the like actually have some really great hardware (ie Ultrasharps, Precision and EliteBook laptops). So when you consider that consoles can have pretty healthy profit margins (Sony's issues notwithstanding, Nintendo always turns a profit on each console sold, and MS has been turning a profit on each 360 for years) Dell could probably turn out a decent console if they wanted to.
