What in your opinion discredits a reviewer?

I've seen excuses from all sides bash reviewers for their reviews of games. For example, No one seemed to like IGN when they scored ODST at 9.0 but others praised them when they gave uncharted a 9.5.

So what makes you not like a reviewer no matter what score they give?

If there opinion goes against mine on what a good game is because reviews don't make a good game good.

When one game get an amazing score then another game thats as good or better gets a crappy score. Eurogamer anyone?

Scores should be a way to compare games, not just to rate them.

When the reviewer actually comes across as being a fanboy in their review (like in that Gamesradar review someone else quoted), when the reviewer says something about the game that simply isn't true or when a reviewer criticises a game for having mechanics that are typical for it's genre.

Inconstancy.

It also bugs me a little when a game is marked down for having certain flaws, and yet another, similar game is given a free pass for those exact same flaws. Silent-Hal

that all depends on who's reviewing it

some people can over look things more than others and are less harsh than others

If I see a reviewer wearing a hat made of cash, smoking a cash stuffed pipe and talking about how great the cash is from this game I start to question.

Mainly contradictions and inaccuracies found in the review are IMO clearindicators the reviewer did not spend enough time with the game and assumed…

IMO …they should be fired….If you can't do your job and play the game…. give a review on the merits of that game….and decide to take the weak lazy way out of assumption….

Your job should be given to someone else that is competent to give a proper review.

Second post nailed it. Also, if a game lacks originality, that's a flag for a bias reviewer. I mean ODST got a 9.

Nothing. It's their opinion and there are flaws with giving a numerical score to a game. Simple as that.

If the reviewer hammers a weakness in one game and skips over that weakness in another game. Its a clear sign of bias.

Inconsistency.

While I thought the 9.3 score was fine, I thought the inconsistencies were there enough that he decided to dock points. Gears of War is no where near original. Take Kill.switch and add chainsaws online and roadie run, and you get Gears of War, yet nothing about originality was mentioned there. SMG was also an example that was brought up, though it did feature planets and such (even though RnC:ToD had gravity boots) but the main mechanics come down to jumping and attacking goombas and other creatures. Not original, but the game was polished as hell, yet nothing was docked there. It's just inconsistencies that really really urk me.

Also, I can't stand people that review a game and they are outright biased or just not into the game (eg. Afrika scored an average of around 70, while IGN gave it like 30 or somethin).

People who make up reasons ("Forza is too realistic"? LOL!! NICE ON GAMEPRO!!) and people who complain about difficulty (some folks ragged on Demon's Souls because they suck at it).

There are many reasons a reviewer may be discredited:

a) He has a conflict of interest when he is in the payroll of a publisher or enjoys the benefits of press junkets that may influence his reviews.

b) He shows a lack of knowledge of the games he reviewed.

c) He is biased on certain games, genres, platforms, or franchises that his biases are self-evident.

d) The reviews he writes are of poor quality and he rants about games than properly reviewing them.
