This is something thats been going around a while. people here like talk about Nintendo not supporting the hardcore gamer. I think thats ridiculous. cos for 1 thing it suggests that anyone (providing s/he has the money) can be a hardcore gamer. like you can go into a shop, buy halo, ninja gaiden, gran turismo and bam, you're a hardcore gamer .... no

hardcore isn't about what you play... its about how you play it.. even so called casual games like minesweeper, anyone can pick it up, but is everyone gonna spend multiple hours everyday trying to get the fastest times... no, only someone whos hardcore into minesweeper would do that, thus making said person, a hardcore gamer

anyone can buy a bunch of shooters and racers, that don't make you hardcore.. a wannbe,, maybe, but not hardcore, you aint hardcore till, you've been sitting and sweating so much they had peel you off the couch.. you aint hardcore till you've just finished a gaming session only to realise you're 2 days late for work.. thats hardcore

anyway, thats my little rant over,... discuss

I would define a "hardcore gamer" as a person who takes gaming as a serious hobby, and spends a lot of time playing games.

I think that it is kind of both i mean a hardcore gamer isnt going to want to play games that dont take any skill or are just really easy like many of the wii games. but also the games they do want to play which take more time to develop and are well developed games they will spend much time on

not necessarily,... i mean, take the minesweeper example, thats not a lenghy process of big teams spend multu millions and taking years to develope.. plus its a pretty straight forward game, not exactly challenging, even on advanced.... and yet there are loads of people playing that game every day, spending hours and hours, check youtube, they even put videos up of their fastest scores,...... would someone who is only casually interested in a game bother with doing all that?

Thats exactly what it is, nothing more, nothing less. Someone who invests alot of Time/money into it... not "Elitism" ... not "basement Nerd" .... jsut an Enthusiast.

I think hardcore gamers forget that elite is another tier up sometimes :P

I call my self hardcore based on my level of interest in video games and thats how I rank wheather people are hardcore or not, I dont think thats unreasonable?

But I base if your hardcore on a platform/genre/game/part of a gameby how much and often you play and your skill in that game plus how much the game has to it

For example I could say using my standards im hardcore on amped 3 as I have got all achievements and im 10th in the world on one mission :P not that hard when hardly anyones bought the game but it still certainley has some skill to it

Exaclty thats why I hate people that get so touchy about the word hardcore. There are very few people that are truly elitist about being hardcore and most of the time it has something to do with gamerscore :P

i think if you spend the same amount of time playing video games as most people spend watching tv, then you're a hardcore gamer

in fact, if you play nothing but children's games nonstop for hours on end, i congratulate you, because you have to be really really hardcore to play children's games nonstop

It should just mean someone who plays games a lot. Unfortunately, because it sounds cool, everyone wants to be a "hardcore" gamer. The terms for hardcore and casual should just be frequent and infrequent gamer. There are way to many idiots who use hardcore as a badge of honor and casual as an insult.

The fact that "casual" games like Guitar Hero, Madden and Halo sell much better on the 360 than "hardcore" games like Bioshock, and "hardcore" games like Zelda and Metroid and Red Steel sell better than "casual" games like Cooking Mama should tell you something about classifying games as hardcore or casual.

I can honestly say that nobody in this forum is hardcore, because if they were they'd be playing games now instead.

Yep. You took the words right out of my mouth. Its not what kind of games you play. Its how much time you spend playing games, and how much you are into it.

i would put having all systems has anything to do with it.. for 1 thing, being a hardcore gamer and being able to afford all 3 major platforms can be 2 different things... and even if u can afford all 3, still don't make you hardcore, some people have more dollars than sense, and just buy anything that "in" without thinkin as to whether they actually want/need it or not

and although i think time spent playin is a factor, i wouldn't put a specific number to it... believe it or not, but even hardcore gamers have other things to do...

a pro gamer however, can easily spend 8+hours a day, since they don't do anything else to do
