A hardcore gamer is:

  • Someone who has a profound respect for the gaming subculture
  • Someone who plays video games at least 5+ hours a day
  • Will miss out on social activities to play video games
  • Does not give two ***** what anyone thinks about his or her passion/obsession
  • Loves almost every genre there is in video games
  • Is highly opinionated when it comes to video games

Not really, I put that down as part of the 'Hardcore' theme.

I consider myself an Informed Casual :P

Normally 0-1 hours on weekdays, 2-4 hours on weekends. On new game releases it might change to up to 6 hours a day.

Well I usually play games about three or more hours a day, sometimes a lot more. I don't see how 5 is the number set in stone. :P A friend of mine plays The Sims, Harvest Moon, and Animal Crossing about ten hours a day and while she maybe hardcore with those games, she's pretty casual about everything else.

Seeing as the word "hardcore" and "casual" were indeed invented by game companies and gaming mags, the only "true" definition is one that comes from them. A hardcore gamer is someone who buys greater than or equal to ~10 games per year. That is all the companies care about, how much you buy, not how much you play. Any other definition is incorrect I say. Think about from a game companies perspective, If they are going to make a hardcore game, they will make it appeal to gamers that buy alot of games, if they are going to make a casual game, they are going to make it appeal to gamers who dont buy alot of games. A person who plays GTA for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week is still a casual gamer as they only own one video game.

I think that is a good way to sum it up. A bit loosely defined, but it works for me.

yeah, a bit loosely to be considered a definition... :P..it could be someone who plays solitairy all day

Hey, I would have to call them hardcore simply for being able to play solitaire that long and not fry their brain. :D

oh they are hardcore no doubt.. but a hardcore gamer?

I disagree. I don't think how much time you spend has anything to do with your love or devotion to your hobby. I'm sure there are millions of people who play hours of games a day, but doesn't know a thing about the industry, the developers or the company who released the game.

Someone can go to every single football game of the local team, and still not know a thing about football or the players. They just want to be part of the crowd.

Meanwhile, I've been gaming for literally my whole life. I can't remember a time in my life when I wasn't playing videogames. I've been around since the begining of consoles and played almost every single console that has come out from then until now. But now I have a full time job, bills and morgage, a wife and kid, and responsibilities that don't allow me as much game time as I would like. I still follow the industry, know everything that is going on, and read up on everything. So am I suddenly less of a gamer than someone who knows nothing but has lots of time to play World of Warcraft or some FPS online?

Not at all. My situation is very similar to yours, except I have an unfortunate situation going on in my life right now so that I do have time to play alot. Its good mental therapy for me. :) But it certainly makes you no less a gamer than someone else because you are being responsible, as you should be. I see you on here, always well informed about the games you are talking about, passionate about the games you like, and you obviously enjoy the hell out of it. You are just as much of a gamer as I am, Zim.

I'd consider anyone who plays games for more than 5-6 hours a day, giving up social events, friendships, rl sports, working out, school work, jobs, basically everything to game non-stop a hardcore gamer.

Basically, a complete gaming addict. A hardcore gamer, to me, is not a good thing to be.

To me, a hardcore gamer is someone who loves to play video games in general regardless of what a handheld, console, or PC it's on. That isn't to say he has to enjoy all forms of gaming (for example, I think the Wii is a ton of fun to play, but I can understand that not everyone would find its appeal), but he certainly wouldn't bash someone because their preference was different from his own.

hardcore is more about a passion for gaming than a cetain type of person or certain types of games. i would probably be considered 'hardcore' due to having compleated most of my games, most of which many people never finish. i recently compleated STALKER but freinds of mine found it impossibel to get into the game. i just thought it was a breath of fresh air in a very generic market. its being able to apreciate things like that that make you 'hardcore'. i also play many 'casual' games like guitar hero or audiosurf (i find it insulting that these games are just branded 'casual')

I suppose it would be someone who doesn't get satisfaction from easy, shallow games. Minigames or puzzles alone cannot sate them.

Someone who enjoys games that require dedication of time and brainpower(maybe even forethought and strategy).

Someone who devotes a lot of time to gaming. That does not include people who devote hours to online FPS. Hardcore players devote time to gaming, not 1 game or type of game. That's just my loose definition though, and I don't define gaming or gamers.

BTW, when I said RL sports, I ment playing, not watching, I find it pretty ironic when someone who watches 5 hours of tv a day insults someone for playing 5 hours of video games a day.

I worked with a guy once that used to go home in the evening afterwork and go directly to bed. He would then get up at 12am and start playing Everquest with his american friends (he was in UK) until he had to go to work.

His day job was testing games.

Thats pretty hardocre in my opinion.

Dear God, I might have been one of those friends for all I know. Three years of my life sapped away by that game, lol...

You are a hardcore gamer if....

1)You beat Ninja Gaiden on the XBOX on Master Ninja

2)You have to get ALL the stars in the 3D mario games.

3)You've owned ten or more consoles in your lifetime.

4)You remember a time before Microsoft and Sony made consoles.

5)You've ever played Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter in an arcade.

6)If you REMEMBER arcades.

7)If you remember how important it was that an arcade port look as close to the original when it hit the Genesis and Super Nintendo.

8)You know that Mai Sharanui was the original bouncy girl of video games.

9) You ever accidently called your girl PEACH during sex.

10) You owned a Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Light, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy SP and Nintendo DS.

Bread_or_Decide

lol, you're making us look old man. I remember arcades. I keep thinking how young me would react after seeing a 360 game, or UMK3 on Live arcade., I think he'd loose his mind and never leave my livingroom. Not to menion the PSP. I always wanted a portable movie player/game player.

A hardcore gamer bought the Dreamcast, it utters the words "Cult Classic" from all it openings. I mean all the good games were absolutely amazing, but you really had to be into gaming to get them (This being their poor sales). And now I have to go back and buy them :D (Which make me not a hardcore gamer)

A hardcore gamer devotes their time to gaming and may treat it as a hobby.

Well, that can be one way of putting it.

Someone who buys lots is mostly a consumer. Buying everything doesn't automatically mean you care and doesn't automatically make you an expert.

The fact is that this can be boiled down to one simple word...knowledge. While I hate the term "hardcore" it basically means someone with a lot of knowledge on the subject, and someone who CONTINUES to pursue further knowledge in that area. Someone who cares about and wants to learn.

ALl this crap about spending a lot of money, or time, or buying everything does not guarantee they have the knowledge...or even CARE about learning. All it means is they have a lot of spare time or money.

Hardcore gamer is simply somebody who spends more than 4 hours a day playing video games. They must get gaming in everyday. I dont think it matters what games they play or which genres they prefer, but is more of a time invested thing.
