What is each gaming system's piece of art? (I don't think the 360 has one)

It has more of a claim at being legitimate art then most of the reject, try to hard titles this gen has praised as great at the very least. A game that embraces being a GAME above all else will always win in that regard.

Exactly- Galaxy is a work of art for the exact same reason that Metroid Prime was a work of art- because it embraces the fact that it is a game, and works best with its medium's strengths, and around its weaknesses.

[QUOTE="charizard1605"] For the Wii? Okami. Cave Story. MadWorld. Super Mario Galaxy. Muramasa: Demon Blade. So many titles on the Wii! :Dcharizard1605

He wasn't being honest enough. All of those were horrible examples. Okami and Muramasa are entirely art on visuals and visuals alone. Certainly not anything outside of that. SMG shouldn't have a douchy word like art thrown at it. It's a game that gladly tries to be a game, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Art much like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think Mass Effect 1 & 2 have brilliant art design and music.

the wii has lots of games considered art while PS3 has about 3 or 4 and 360 has none. The wii is a beautiful console.

Nothing. Video games are games, not art. If anything they are a design that contains and makes use of art assets.

Alan Wake? Anyways, I'm going to go against the grain here and say making video games IS an art. It's crafting gameplay, graphics, and (somewhat) story out of technology . Pacing is an art (though ND have it down to a science), so is all the mocap and acting we see,. If games were science and they were all applying a formula, we wouldn't see such disparities between games. Games are created by passion as much as anything else.

[QUOTE="jg4xchamp"]Neither of em have anything worth calling something as douchy as the word "art" No matter how potentially awesome The Last Guardian will be.

What's "douchy" about art?

Look at you, doing it right now!

I'm not smug anyway. I'm just pretending to be happy about how smart I am. People put worthless labels like "art" on things so they can protect themselves from that which they don't truly understand.

What are you going on about? Why would someone who talks about art not be able to "truly understand" what art is? Is someone who talks about art automatically a dumb a-hole? Is it too "pretentious" to talk about art?

Talking about art, and making yourself judge of what is, or isn't, art is pretentious. It's a "eye of the beholder" thing, and once we accept that what is defined as art is purely subjective, then classifications such as "art/high art/fine art" become meaningless.

Art is art whether it is good or bad, which is subjective, but the word still has a meaning.

[QUOTE="godzillavskong"][QUOTE="soulitane"][QUOTE="godzillavskong"] Yeah, maybe he has a vendetta against the 360, but I think Limbo, and Alan Wake could be two of the 360's titles in that department. Alan Wake's color scheme, with the dark, muddy blacks, and with the lighting. Great looking games!

Hmmm I kind of see what you're getting at with Alan Wake, I agree that it's a great looking game.

Yeah, I checked his profile, while he may have rated Halo2, and Halo Combat Evolved, it doesn't really show any interest of anything 360. Maybe he is against it, therefore doesn't think anything on that platform is art. Either way, there is no denying that Limbo, and Alan Wake have a very nice art direction taking in those titles.

...haha no I don't have anything against the Xbox, I use mine for Fable 3, Halos, Gears, and some other singleplayer things. While I feel like that every gaming system has its original, amazing looking and often well told story, I feel that the 360 doesnt quite have one. I would have said Mass Effect 1 or 2, 1 being more obvious, since 2 is multiplat, but then again 1 is too.

I would say the Wii has SMG as close as it can be, PS3 has The Last Guardian, and the PC has plenty too. But the closest the 360 has was the original Gears, which is so stunted from being art thanks to its lackluster story. And yes, I'm flamebaiting a little on purpose.

Blabadon
so you consider SMG to have great story. its a FANTASTIC game but i don't think anyone could say with a straight face that SMG has a good story

360 has LIMBO, & until we see much of anything for TLA, LIMBO > TLA in terms of art.

The Path seem a nice fit for the PC,but there´s just too many on the system to choose just one, especially indie games.

I would guess Limbo for the 360,the upcoming TLG for the PS3 and I´m not sure as far as the Wii is concerned.

charizard1605
For the Wii? Okami. Cave Story. MadWorld. Super Mario Galaxy. Muramasa: Demon Blade. So many titles on the Wii! :D

Wii is not a product of Okami and Okami is not a product of Wii. Okami is the PS2s piece of art, not the Wiis.

this is an odd choice, but Halo: ODST was a beautiful moody game that gets overlooked due to the "halo" moniker.

art wise for PS3 i think Demon's Souls is obvious. and MGS4 was significantly more art than game.

Okami is the obvious, if not overly literal choice for Wii.

I don't think there has been any game this gen I would legitimately feel comfortable as calling a work of Art.

ActicEdge

Really? I am perfectly comfortable saying GoW III and LBP are works of art. Different, of course, but both beautiful and very artistic in their approach to visuals. GoW III for it's intricately detailed world, where every object seems as solid as the material really is. LBP because it's just gorgeous, everything from it's cardboard cutout visuals to its lighting and music choices... very nicely done.
