You really don't believe that having friends over and playing with them in the same room sounds like a superior experience as well as an easier one to accomplish?

How about you provide a link which proves this little statistic of yours?
When friends come over we usually play Super Smash Bros Brawl, that game never gets old if you have 3 other people to battle. Also, it seems likeit'susually better to play locally than online. There's no lag, no extra fees, and in some games there's an extra feature in a game if you play offline. For example, in Brawl you can only play custom stages offline and you can't online.

Same experience, i don't think so, there will never be a better experience than have friends in the same room laughing, screaming even hitting someone. for me, splitscreen is awesome, and its a shame its dissapearing, i truly wish more games had this feature, like Saint's Row 2 (honestly, i don't want 16 players, if i can be playing with my friends on the same room). Anyway, that's what i think.

Same experience, bigger screen.bronxxbomberswhile lan is great, there something great about sitting next to your mate on the couch playing on the same screen, especially in coop. What good is a game like killzone 2 if you have no broadband or second console once you have finished the sp a couple of times? Had they put in split screen for 4 player it would have been so much better.
so true, I miss they days when you could pick up just about any game take it home and play with your mates, now you spend 10mins looking at all the games only to find about 5 out of 50 that have local mp. We don't want the consoles to become like pcs which require 2 system for mp, but if the trend continues by next gen split screen will be history and pcs and consoles will be almost identical to each other.Mostly the implementation of better internet services, which isn't a bad thing for most people. But for people like me who love to have friends over, it's getting really bleak .

and online deathmatches are so boarding compared to you and 3 mates playing on the same screen in the same room. online is great when you by yourself but local mp is always way more fun. The lack of lan in some new games is also a big issue. The devs are killing off the 2 best forms of mp, lan and split screen. if both disappear mp will be worthless.Split-screen is so 2004.

Yea, split screen gaming is much better than on line IMO. We need to at least have that option to play locally in every MP game

Well like I said that's hardly been an issue for me and we all talking about preference here I like to have more than 1 friend over so when it comes to that, splitting the screen even more becomes a bigger issue. I know it can be fun but the split has always been annoying so I rather have them working on some other forms of lan MP than going back to that.

Yea I understand that problem (It's even worse when you try a Wii FPS :P) But it helps when you have a big TV.Mostly the implementation of better internet services, which isn't a bad thing for most people. But for people like me who love to have friends over, it's getting really bleak .

yeah its getting pretty sad, i got like 3 games now that can be played multi with alot of friends over. Who wants to sit alone and be a big loner when u can have friends over have some good times and play some games. Real ppl is always better than online crap.

Yeah, it's so hard to find games 4 people can play at the same time nowadays that isn't some instrument game.
I love playing online, its a blast. However, it still isn't as fun as playing with friends. It's even better to have a friend over, and play a split screen game with others online as well (i.e. Mario Kart). I prefer playing with friends, but online is good to have, since you can't have friends over 24/7.
Still, if I had to choose only one, I'd take split screen over online.
Yeah, the lessening options for local multiplayer is a pity. It's the one thing that makes consoles so good, and you can be damn sure it was local multiplayer that sold Mario Kart, Halo, SSBB, etc. I just hope that non-Nintendo developers would wake up and start making CONSOLE games again, and not just toned-down PC titles, which is what most of them seem to be obsessed with.

Yes, that was the main advantage that Consoles had over PC yet its losing ground quickly in this area. Developers need to understand that splitscreen should be standard and should be implemented in multiplayer games. Luckily Borderlands is one of the few with splitscreen to be released.;)
Most people? Does not seem so since Wii is selling most and last generation consoles sold at a faster rate and had many more splitscreen games. Wii is entirely made up of local multiplayer.[QUOTE="RadecSupreme"][QUOTE="bronxxbombers"]Most people prefer playing against their friends on seperate xboxs, with mics. I don't really think split-screen co-op is selling Wiis, considering how mostly hardcore gamers want split-screen and majority of Wii buyers are casuals. Also with tthat logic you could say terrible online or shovelware is what's selling the Wii...
Not only that, the best local multiplayer games don't have to split the screen (SSBB doesn't split the screen, I think; nor do sports games most of the time).[QUOTE="tagyhag"][QUOTE="ps3wizard45"]Definetly, Im glad Split Screen is dieing/deadHave you ever played with other people in real life? Are people honestly against have a choice? Seriously listen to what your saying. Split screen/ local player, whatever you want to call it needs to come back is what I am saying. Many of you probably do not care because you do not have friends over but many of us do and enjoy that feature very much.
Gee who'd have thought console gaming was evolving in the direction of PC gaming?skrat_01
Not the people that say that PC gaming is dying, that's for sure.

Since they both have a dedicated online service, they should be combined. Not to mention the PC. that rarely is ever had splitscreen.
I agree totally. That's the entire reason for getting a console. Why consoles are going in the direction they go is beyond me.

My theory is that much of the gaming industry and core gaming population has been conditioned to believe that video games are technology-driven, instead of content driven. They're generally blind to the concept of technology being "good enough", and have difficulties grasping the fact that a less technologically sophisticated solution may in fact be the superior one. For examples, see local multiplayer, sprite-based games, arcade gameplay and generally simple, undetailed graphical styles.

I totally agree. I often find myself looking past a games presentation (even if it's great presentation) and looking at what the core gameplay offers. That is why I dislike Call of Duty 4 and love Stalker. In terms of presentation and accessibility, Stalker is a total mess. But in terms of the content tha game offers, Stalker is miles, hell even lightyears ahead.[QUOTE="tok1879"]Yes of course, because people prefer buying two consoles to do what they could have done easily on one. Not really thanks to the Wii. Many people hate on it but it does have its advantages.

Splitscreen isn't too hard to pull off, its been around since the N64. The main reason is becuase aside from taking away just a bit of time away from the other offerings, 4 players on one console in 4 player splitscreen = $60. 4 players playing online in seperate consoles = $240 earned.

It was born when there's no networking, true. But a solution being more technologically advanced doesn't automatically mean it's better than the simpler way of doing things. Local multiplayer isn't merely an inferior version of the same concept as online, it's a wholly different one, which I also happen to prefer.
If a game has online multplayer, it should also have splitscreen. I wish Far Cry 2 had splitscreen so I could play some of my custom maps with friends who don't have the game or a PS3. And I don't know why EA didn't botherwith splitscreen in Skate 2, I can play with friends on the same console, but only for three game modes that require us to take turns. It would've been better if we could do something like splitscreen freeskate or best trick.

People may also be willing to have their own console so they don't have to rely on their friend. After all, what if the friend isn't home...or worse, moves (say, goes away to college)? It's similar to the kind of mentality that killed off the arcade in America. Sort of, "Why bother?"tok1879
