[QUOTE="Ragashahs"]unless internet speeds get alot quicker and MS is willing to offer a much bigger harddrive digital distribution doesn't seem too likely. i don't see why not by then BD drive speeds will be up and will definetly be worth itPimpshigity21

http://news.cnet.com/does-the-xbox-720-need-blu-ray-to-succeed/

There's no way Microsoft will install a Blu-ray drive into the Xbox 720, and to be quite honest, I don't think there's any reason for it to do so. The reasons are simple. First, Microsoft doesn't want to pay a competitor--Sony, the key backer behind the Blu-ray Disc Association--to use its format. Second, and perhaps most important, Microsoft realizes that Blu-ray isn't an ideal format, given the fact Blu-ray's chance of success is very much in doubt.

Good point. Besides space, what has Blu-Ray ever done anything special for games? Nothing. Zip. Plus the Cell in the PS3 didn't do wonders, either.

And it didn't stop Sony from spending millions to make sure that the then winning HD-DVD would experience a quick and horrible death. :P

Think of all the fun stuff Sony could have spent that money on if HD-DVD had never existed. All that money Sony had to spend, and Blu-ray's chances of success are still very much in doubt.

Those who do not lear from history (betamax, Betamax, BETAMAX) are doomed to repeat it.

Blu ray was outselling HD-DVD 3:1 when Microsoft brought out their add on so its pretty oblivious they were just backing HD-DVD to slow down Blu rays sales

(i mean who backs a format that's getting outsold 3:1 ?)

Microsoft also said : " if Sony's Blu-ray does end up winning the next-generation format war, Microsoft would be willing to finally support Blu-ray, the company said."

I'm almost sure HD-DVD was winning back then since some dirt-cheap HD-DVD players had been released. It was looking like HD-DVD was going to win until "someone" bribed one of the major studios and the rest is history. Go look it up. The bribe had to be made out of desperation.

Either way, no skin off MS's back.

If Sony ends up winning the nex-gen format, I guess we will see a Blu-ray equipted Xbox console. If Sony does not win, well that's a lot of money they had to spend and they did some major damage their PlayStation brand...only to be left with a modern day Betamax.

Well, until the next format winner is announced, I'll keep watching inexpensive DVDs or I'll pick up one of those cheap Walmart players. Heck, I might even buy a PS3 if they price is right.

It's not a necessity for a gaming system to have Blu-Ray, and chances are it still won't be needed when MS new console is released.

[QUOTE="Captain__Tripps"] Not exactly the same thing, lol. What is Sony going to put on their laptop other than windows? MS doesn't need BR. They probably will use it, but there are other options. Ship it with a huge HD, and do installs. Use HD-DVD, or there are other larger than DVD formats.Couth_
RIGHT NOW there isn't any other options. HD DVD is completely dead. And i've said this before, games arn't going to take up 200gigs that Blu Ray can hold. But they are going to take up more than the 9 that a DVD can hold. Even 10 gigs is too much for a DVD. And some genres just won't work on two discs. So unless something is developed before M$ comes out with a new console. Expect it to use Blu Ray. And Sony will welcome it of course.

Just because HD-DVD is dead doesn't mean MS can't buy the technology and put it in their next gen system.

Call me crazy, but didn't Sony already win against HD-DVD? It's no doubt that Microsoft will have to wind up using Blu-Ray next gen.

Interesting... M$ buys HD-DVD (dirt cheap) and uses it solely for Games.. It would give the devs all the space they've been crying about(but don't use) and It'll allow games to hold far more space on em than DVD9's. However I still see M$ adding bluray to the next format and then just pushing the Hell out of DD.

Microsoft is thinking it's useless, adds to the cost of the machine, that there's a possibility it might get canned soon, and that the PS3 has proven it isn't necessary.

did I miss anything?

Microsoft knows that they cannot stay with the DVD format in the next generation because by then every game they make would require a 2 disc minimum. games are becoming much too advanced to compress a game onto a 30gig dual layer disc

I don't belieive this is true, and if it is, then I'm getting the next Playstation next generation. IT would be suicide for Mirosoft to not put a Blu-Ray player in the next Xbox, it would end up like the Wii where all the ports are dumbed down and horrible (except a few).

right. because they couldn't just do what PC does and ship the systems with massive HDD (that are dirt cheap vs bluray drives) right? no that would make too much sense, right? i mean with the read bandwidth issues with the PS3 you have mandatory installs for nearly every game anyways.. so what the hell is the point of having bluray? to waste money? no - to push movies. does MS care about pushing movies? no - they care about games. thank god one company cares about the games this gen.

Why is this thread labelled: What is Microsoft Thinking?

When the OP has nothing to do with MS?

Here's some news: MS is a hardnosed competitor that is going to make future media/format decisions that seems the best at the time they need to make them. Which isn't for a couple of years.

It is physical, insert it into your Xbox 720, install the game on your HDD, PLAY.

Thats the next-gen format of data.

MS will buy blu ray. this gets me thinking of what they are going to do. i think they might get HD DVD. it will be cheap since no one buys those and they would need to make it so DVDs and HD DVDs can be played. who knows what microsoft will have in the next xbox.

There are ways to get around the mandatory installs developers are just not informed of the process or are too lazy to implement it. Insomniac was one of the first to discover how to avoid the large mandatory installs and have shared that info on their noturne website.
