i know they probably be last this gen, but will the brand survive?
they are losing money across the board and it isnt getting any better for them.

I think Sony's ambition to release a console as a mediahub has been all but crushed. Nobody is going to pay top dollar for a cutting edge console that takes over a living room. If Sony survives this gen, they will have to approach next gen with a Wii-like strategy or become extinct.
Sony will survive. The PS3 will finish this gen in third place but will outsell the competition in it's life time.

It's barely been crushed seeing where you stand you should be able to speak. You know what the country is going through right? a RECESSION. Everyone's posting losses. And you seem to forget sonys a bit more than just a gaming company. Ohh By the way how is mad world selling. I supported and bought a copy? But has it hit a 100K yet?
Wii strategy? nah...They have a lot of 1st party studios that aren't mediocre at all...they'll have their own aproach to the casuals thoughI think Sony's ambition to release a console as a mediahub has been all but crushed. As far as sales go there is really no way they get out of 3rd this gen IMO. crappy economy+high pricepoint=not a good market position as far as overall library of games go I think it is really catching up to 360 quickly in total quality games available. By the end of this gen I think both 360 and PS3 will have huge libraries of great games.POJO_MOFO
AGreed on all points.
But I think the PS3 does eventually outsell the X360, but not until the new consoles are out and nobody (other than cows) cares.

each time I see you post, you must mention cows. why is that? lol.theres no doubt that sony will survive this gen, baring in mind that they arent just a gaming company. but i think overall the PS3 will outsell the 360 in lifetime sales. dunno about the wii though.

Wake me up when Nintendo posts losses... you know Sony's competition? PS3 was faltering right out of the gate before the worst of the ecomonic downturn because of Sony's own ineptness and their failed strategy to take over the living room and pawn the PS3 off as a trojan horse for their bluray player.Sony have thrown themselves in at the deep end this gen, which might not have been so bad if the launch hadn't been such a catastrophe.
Also, I'm no hardware buff, but what I can't comprehend is why they would fit their system with a ridiculously expensive and powerful CPU and then tack on a severely underpowered GPU, knowing that it would still sell at a massive loss for a LONG time. Seriously to God, what were they thinking? Did they really believe that the hype and Sony brand loyalty could keep the PS3 selling for $600 for a few years and then lower the price slightly when the hardware got cheaper? Incredible.
Sony's future is really hard to pinpoint. Microsoft lost something in excess of $4 billion last gen, but the upshot of that is that Microsoft is one of the world's biggest corporations and one of the few that can seriously handle such a large setback and the original Xbox still created a new market for them. In the scheme of things, Sony don't register a fraction of Microsoft's net worth so I hope for their sake that Sony recognise their problem as far more than a small setback before it's too late.

but wii-like strategy will lead gaming closer to death, Microsoft will likely try to follow wii and if sony does that too then gaming is dead!! then the only thing that will survive is pc and its borefest RTS

Yes, that is what Sony believed. And it's why the PS3 is solidly in 3rd place right now
I think ultimately they'll end up being second place this generation, with the xbox being in third, in terms of market share. The brand will survive - Honestly, right now the thing hurting the PS3 is probably its price point.HaziqonfireI'm curious to hear why you would think this. I don't see any reason to think Sony will catch MS.
PS3 is exactly in the place they deserve to be this gen imo. After all those lies and arrogant claims im surprised they still sell almost as good as the 360. It just proves that their brand loyalty still works!!!
Im really sure that no other company could be able sell a console that costs 2x more than the competition and has half the lineup (quality and quantity) with no improvement in graphics or gameplay. Imo sony is very lucky for selling PS3 this good....

I don't see any reason to think Sony will catch MS. Mainly because I think they'll start to gain sales as soon as the PS3's price becomes more reasonable to the average consumer. As of now its still too expensive - and the Playstation brand itself is well known to people. Im sure all those PS2 owners haven't jumped into this generation yet as well.
I'm sure Sony has learned from the mistakes that it has made with the PS3. It's still selling relatively well, even if it is in last place. I'm sure the brand will survive in the long term.
It's definitely not good. By the end of this gen Sony will most likely be last in sales, it's really all going to come down to 3 key factors:
Sony's plan to grab casual gamers: It's hard to say what they could do that Nintendo and MS haven't already done, it will take a lot of thinking and I can't see Sony doing much here but they have to find a way to get PS2 owners back. =/
Ninty and MS staying strong: Both the big N and MS did great this gen in terms if sales, they got their product out there and got some great 3rd party exclusives. If they can continue that momentum and not mess up or get cocky, than Sony will be in big trouble. After all, Nintendo did great with the cube, and Sega did great with the Dreamcast, but Sony was able to keep the momentum which killed them, which is why this is far more important than the first factor.
1st party titles: One of the reasons Nintendo was able to stay afloat with the cube was using their franchises and putting them on game boy to help them sell more on the consoles. Sony needs this, 3rd parties are going away from them slowly and they will need great 1st party games that will sell to keep them in the market so they can hopefully rebound next gen.
My thoughts on the matter, take it as you will. :)

Sony also has a better position than Microsoft does in Japan, so we'll see. Personally I don't care what place they come in anyway, meh.

The casual PS2 gamer, who waited for the PS2 to be $150-$200, is more likely to get either a Wii or a ProX360 when it hits $200. Brand loyalty has been greatly exaggerated by Sony.
But I do think the PS3 eventually outsells the X360, but not because of PS2 fans. But rather because of Japan and Europe.

it eventually will outsell the 360, but not before the next generation of consoles is released and only cos MS will drop the 360 the way they did the billbox, unlike sony who will continue to support the ps3 like thay did the ps2, anyone on here who think MS will not just drop the 360 at the end of the gen is deluded.I'm surprised so many people think the PS3 will outsell the 360 by the end of the 2.
Hope you guys realize that in japan PS3 has a 2 million lead while 360 has a 9 million lead in the states, and 360 is leading Europe by a million.
I think by the time they're both done PS3 will eventually outsell 360 in Europe (but only by a million or so), but not in America and worldwide, the lead in America is just too large.
I fear that the lessons learned from the PS3 is really going to effect the way the PS4 is developed. I expect them to use cheap hardware and sell at a cheap price point. I fear that they will over react because of the problems of the PS3.sony will survive this gen and they will make the ps4, i think that at the end ps3 will sell better than 360 but theloses of ps3 will be bigger than it's profit

they are losing money across the board and it isnt getting any better for them.
LOL, yes the brand will survive. It won't be as strong as it once was. This gen, they will release great games from this point on, but the sales will be poor until next gen kicks in. Nintendo, who was once the king of consoles, went to the bottom last gen, and then back to the top this gen... so regaining popularity is totally possible. Lets hope that every console does NOT become casual for next generation, or else hardcore gaming will end. Since hardcore drives casuals, i can't see that happening, but it is possible too. Remember also, that Sony may lose money in the gaming market, but they do make profit from many other types of products they sell.each time I see you post, you must mention cows. why is that? lol.[QUOTE="MightyMuna"][QUOTE="LosDaddie"]

:| wow, the man asked a simple question, judging by your rude, sarcasticreaction and how you just have to say cow in every post, I'm going to guess you're a lemming whose feelings were hurting last gen. Don't bother saying you own all 3 consoles, I do too.Doesn't change the fact that you're a lemming.
PS3 will outsell the 360 with a pricedrop no problem. However, it wont catch the Wii because Nintendo sells to non-gamers now.
here are standings in sales:
1. Nintendo
2. Microsoft
3. Sony
sony can't get out of last.
but games-wise, here are the standings:
1. Sony
2. Microsoft
3. Nintendo
as you can see, it is the exact opposite. sony have already taken over when it comes to games. this is just the beginning of it all. the massive titles are still yet to hit. i doubt MS and nintendo can go at the rate of Sony in terms of quality titles.
of course they will survive. Nintendo took last place during the last 2 generations and look where they are now
like other people said Sony will end up in third and they will survive because they are not simply a gaming company they could technically drop the whole games bit but it will never happen unless they have a couple more gens like this. They will need to develop a console that is both powerful enough to satisfy people but low tech enough to keep it at a low enough price to actually sell the thing. Also they need to forget about brand loyalty because lasttime their attitude was "Oh our brand loyalty is so good that people won't mind giving up an arm and a leg to get our console" this didnt really work out.

the problem with your second argument is that it's incredibly debatable for me Nintendo has the best games With Microsft being a close second and Sony is dragging way behind.I think Sony's ambition to release a console as a mediahub has been all but crushed. Nobody is going to pay top dollar for a cutting edge console that takes over a living room. If Sony survives this gen, they will have to approach next gen with a Wii-like strategy or become extinct.

No it has not for people who want the best of both world and don't have much money and invest properly this is the best choice. PS3 next-gen games + blu-ray + online gaming (free) + 1.3 hdmi + internet browsing. all you need is a hdtv and decent speakers your set with a media hub $400. As for other choices well thats up to the person they can have almost the same thing with the 360 except for blu-ray you may opt out for the deceased hddvd or regular dvd's online play is 60 bucks for a year and componet cable if you get the standard 360.
